Edit: Just put the sector on food focus and you are fine. But still it needs fixing, if every other focus basicly means your empire starves to death. I leave the rest as it is when I start the post.

Ok I had a small surplus on food.

And I only put some planets in my sector:

One month hand of later.

20170408145347_1.jpg

And a little bit later, it got better, so I thought, hey maybe it just needs some time to adjust.

No it doesent.

Pls Paradox tell the sector AI that food has always to be worked.

Oh and here are some of my sector planets at the point of the last screenshot above. Basicly 4 months after I put them into the sector. Look especially on Koltren, were 5 farms are without a worker.

Grab a screenshot of the actual sector screen when the problem is occurring? I'd bet whats happening si the AI is assigning just enough pops to cover the sectors food consumption, and not aware of or worrying about the empire wide.

Ok I did test it with sience focus, Step 1: The sector will balance the food on day one of every month to 0. Step 2: Some days later he will go deeply negative. Back to Step 1 for the next month.

An idea for the future could be not to pool all your planets in one massive sector. Keep a sector for agrarian purposes, at least, so you don't have to commit over half of your empire to farming to avoid all your people starving to death. :p

This is good for performance as well (haven't gotten that far in Utopia yet though, might have been fixed but I doubt it).

Also, we have an entire thread for sectors. ;)

I had this happen to me as well. My empire was totally fine and then after a few years I went negative food that kept changing during the month from only very little to up to -20 and back and forth

Why do you just have one sector? You have tons of influence, so you should have no problems building a couple sectors and making one dedicated to food production.

Make more smaller sectors? I've not had this problem myself, and I always try to have as many sectors as possible, with 2-3 planets per sector.
