I have done a fair bit of raiding, but I've yet to get more than a Viking trait. What are the actual requirements for the better and bigger versions?

In addition for the regular requirement it also says "check_variable = { which = viking_raids value = 50 }" in the event for Ravager and "check_variable = { which = viking_raids value = 100 }" for seaking.

Likely it requires you to bring home a specific or minimal value. Or its not working as intended.

As best as I can tell from following the code, you need to siege down 50 and 100 holdings respectively. I don't think it has anything to do with the amount of gold or the number of trips.

so i have to completely siege like 50-100 castles. cities, or baronies ? damn challenge accepted

Does your character have to be present for each of these sieges? Or only your army?

I am not sure, but you have not needed to be present to gain the viking trait in the past (99% sure) so I'm fairly certain you will get credit for these raids even if you are not a commander. It makes sense to me that you would at least; even if you aren't a commander, it's your flag that's being flown.

Definitely more profitable. If it comes to some wench-grabbing, then I always look to the tribals in Ireland and Scooterland.

In the early going it's definitely just hit and run's, but once you can field an army large enough that you won't be threatened by the OPMs you're hit-n-running, then it's more worth it to siege down. And later when you can field enough to assault the holdings (5-10x the defenders) it's like free money. This is why tribal -> republic Norse Germanic rulers can be so filthy rich. Basically, permanent raiding with large retinues = all the moneys.
