How can I send ships to uncharted territories to explore? I put an explorer on a transport and it still would not let me do that. What am I doing wrong?

I assume you mean a conquistador when you mentioned putting an 'explorer' on a transport. An actual explorer is a type of naval leader. A fleet under an explorer's command can sail into unknown portions of the ocean and reveal those areas to you. Also, when your naval technology passes a certain level (I think 11), then all of your fleets are capable of exploring, regardless of their leader-type.

thank you. It does not seem to work. I built a fleet in Okhotsk, put my Russian conquistador on a transport - but it still would not let me send the ship to uncharted territories. I don't see what I am doing wrong. Please help.

Not conquistador: he is for exploring land areas. Explorer (admiral, naval leader, comes with the navy, not with the army).

The conquistador has a 'classical' spanish conquistador helmet as a icon, well that's what it's supposed to look like anyway :) While the explorer is as was said a naval leader and has a utility for drawing circles in geometry (can't remember the exact name in english) as an icon.

The explorer does not have a compass, he has a Sextant, a device used for determining latitude at any time and longitude when you know the precise greenwich time. Its a navigational instrument.

Moreover, Russia doesn't get any explorer before a looong time in the GC.
You have 2 solutions here:
1. develop your naval tech until you can explore with all navies.
2. try to exchange maps with some country that might be interested (Portugal, netherland, Spain, England).
