no you didnt you just said it can be modded, which is not always a solution, i was asking if a dev ever seriously said you cant get rid of the sprites.
There will be no option for the sprites to vanish. Someone would have to mod the files.
Maybe it would be enough to delete the files, can't say. Or make the models only 1 pixel high, so they will be invisible.

I actually found a post by Podcat from May 2015.

A counters only view?!
I established in the above section that out new counters are better in every way as interfaces than the counters from HOI3, so the only reason would be that you don't like to see pretty 3d graphics and feel this is immersion breaking in your games if they dont look like an old boardgame. Since we know there are people who feel this way we still investigated the option of a counter only interface:
- You can either make a 2d overlay like we have currently, so the only difference would be to turn off the 3d models. I am not going to do something I feel adds nothing and just makes the game ugly, but I am sure someone will make a mod that does this.
- The other option is 3d counters that look like 2d, or boardgame chips (sort of what the hoi3 ones were, they were costlier to render than the 3d objects btw). The problem with these is that the shape isnt natural and when placed into a 3d map trying to represent the world will end up clipping into, falling off mountains and lots of other terribleness that is extremely hard to work around. we would also end up having to reimplement all the work we did with the 2d overlay counters in the previous section, but now in 3d. We are still a small core team of 3 programmers and I cant justify spending that much development time just to add a visual choice of the same thing, or we'll end up where hoi3 was with too much stuff, none of it balanced or working quite right.
- I also feel there is a large overlap between this crowd and people who only want a 2d map as well. These people I am sad to say we will never be able to make happy with the release of hoi4. A 2d game is possible to make, but its not a game anyone in the team wants to make, or that has a chance of selling as much as a nicer looking 3d one. If you are in this camp, get together and make a 2d mod. Its definitely possible, but its a lot of work we really cant justify doing if we want to keep making games and not starve on the streets.

Another traditionalist here. I have always liked the counters and expect I will use them whenever available. I also would have liked the historical OOB structures to be available. However, HoI 3 clearly showed the AI was incapable of maintaining Corps/Army integrity, and often even incapable of safeguarding HQ's. Until it can do that I think I have to reluctantly accept that HoI IV needs another, simpler mechanism for handling formations.

Ultimately it comes down to the fact that there is a certain subsection of the community who think that demanding the ugly and inconvenient makes them "proper gamers".

im not demanding the ugly and inconvenient. i think that the sprites are ugly and inconvenient, confusing compared to simple counters, nato or NOT! im NOT demanding counters i just dont know why i have to flipping see models of toy soldiers.. DLC? as it stands its just about impossible to tell what the hell is going on from any screengrab of combat ive seen so far.

i can understand not agreeing with me but thinking im crazy for not liking it isnt helpful at all. and besides. look at the screenshot posted on page two of the thread.

who could honestly prefer that? and if you do, thats ok. sprites have been in pdx games for as long as i can remember but why are you forcing me to use them now?

What makes you think so? Most people (especially the casuals) don't even go to the forum. I hated OOB in HoI 3 and I didn't ever posted in the forum.
What you see in the forum are mostly hardcore fans who demand hardcore features, which are not speaking for even remotly "most people" who will later buy this game.

OOB was tedious in building up, maintaining and moving useless HQs arround for their bonus.
If divisional planning and construction can be designed off map as it is in hoiV , I'm,not sure why that could not be the case for theatres, army groups etc and be done off the map as well. Yes, hq symbols on the map was silly, but you dont need them on a map to have an oob either.

I dont agree that its a case of only hard core gamers who want such things as an oob , I dont mind small things like ships running on air or tanks made of oil, technical extrapolations for technical reasons are fine so long as the correct end result occurs when they dont have contact with a nominal supply line. But nor do I think its unreasonable to ask in this day and age that a game that bills itself as being about ww2 have things like correct organisation and command structures, because these were and are important.

My dear chap/chapess, I'm not forcing you to do anything. Nothing personal, but I doubt you're worth the effort.

The wonderful variety of historical costumes do add value to Europa Universalis - the history is the point, after all. But in a World War II grand strategy game the shape of the helmets isn't useful information. Perhaps realistic death animations would be a somber reminder of the real life subject matter, but I doubt Paradox is going there. The Civilization games are great but I'm looking for a different experience when I play Hearts of Iron.

... sprites have been in pdx games for as long as i can remember but why are you forcing me to use them now?
That's the weird bit.
I get it that HoI3 style counters are extra work and Paradox wants to spend the effort elsewhere. But how much effort would it take to make the models optional in-game? I'm never going to purchase the Czech Uniforms DLC in any case.

Informal poll: If this "counters" issue has shifted you from "Purchase HoI IV On Sight" to "Wait and See" please hit 'Agree'. If not, please hit 'Respectfully Disagree'. Thank you.
