Are there any? Can we see some if there aren't any? I know Paradox wants to show off the lovely graphics (and believe me they are lovely) but it would be nice to see what the counters look like!

Ummm... where to begin?

Sorry, but there arent counters in HoI IV. What they call counters now are those little boxes below the models.

And there is no OOB either. You can make groups of units (but not sub groups) under one general and name them as you please.

Making a group and giving it a general. Not much of an organization, if you ask me, as you cant make subgroups.

Though what you say is accurate my understanding is that a general can have more than one battle plan using separate groups of units. So in a way you can have sub groupings though as far as I can tell you can't store these configurations in a permanent, easily recallable way.

Not having a command hierarchy is a major disappointment in this upcoming war game. It really takes away from the immersion and historical realism... no more corps/armies/army groups... too much dumbing down... I think I will just keep on playing hoi 3 with the wonderful mods out there... UNLESS... modders can add the OOB into hoi 4... and bring back the need for oil and fuel to run your tanks and ships... and why not keep NATO style counters as an OPTION?

So basically HOI3 but with the graphics tweaked (but not too much because change is obviously not good.)

So what exactly are the differences in this case? I mean, we're still going to have historical division and fleet setups in 1936 and 1939, right? I'm a bit confused by the 'there are no OOBs' thing.

It dosent help to understand what aviation in general is doing.

That's actually not true. The plane's animation are based on how your airforce is faring. If your air force is doing a bad job, the planes being shot down in the animated dog fights will be your own. :p

Anyway, the generals *are* the subgroupings. We still have theaters in HoI4, and it appears that we have more theaters than we did in HoI3. They are the tabs in the top right. I'm not sure how making theaters works, but if we can make our own, then you have two sorts of groups. Theater (Or "High Command") and our command groups. So at least two groupings of some sort.

About counters: NATO Symbols are an option to replace the RTS symbols. In other words: You can replace the helmet that represents infantry with the nato symbol that replaces infantry, so the cross in the box.

You always have two things displayed about a division though, the soldier figure as well as the counter, which in this case is a literal counter, because it actually counts your divisions, something the counters did not do in HoI3. In other words: If you have three infantry divisions in a province, you don't have 3 cards, but instead one card with a 3 on it.

However, we do not have counters like we did in HoI3 anymore, as in, we do not have the only counters option. The 3D model is always displayed along the counter.

The 3D model is not shown at medium to high zoom levels though, then you'll only see the counters. The counters also start merging the more you zoom out, so that you can, for example, at at a glance see how many divisions of what kind you got at a frontline, and the further you zoom in, the more those counter stacks will split, allowing you to see the positions of the divisions in greater detail.

Example:
Far Zoom Level: 50 inf divs, 20 tank divs, 10 mot divs on the western front.
Medium Far Zoom Level: 20 inf divs, 20 tank divs, 5 mot divs on the norther part of western front. 10 inf divs, 5 mot divs on central part of western front. 10 inf divs on southern part of western front.
Close Zoom Level: You see exactly where every div is.

Of course, the zoom is as variable as it is in other Pdx games. So it'll have more levels than those three.

I think the zoom feature is really sweet. Its going to work well I think.

The zoom feature would have worked really well with a hierarchy too. :) Zoom out, see one counter representing the army. Zoom in to see the corps, and zoom in yet again to see the divisions.

I dont like airplane animation, its my taste there is no true or not true in that. Its my opinion.
Their fly its not realistic and appear as a drunk flies. Its not needed show if my aviation is doing a good or bad job with animation, i know it just from statistics, casualties, battle report ecc ecc. Personally would have chosen animations more realistic and synthetic, which would consume also less of my precious CPU/GPU.

I know and many players feel the same way about NATO counters, they only provide information if you know what they are and as such.......

The first issue was that there were many compliants about the size of the OOB in HOI3, so they have looked to pare it back. Have they gone too far? Perhaps, I think most players would have liked to have a slightly deeper OOB, but as no one besides a few have actually played we just need to wait and see.

If enough people don't like th animations they may provide a way to stop them, however they want new players to be able to tell at a glance how air battles are going and this is the way they have chosen.

I think the zoom feature is really sweet. Its going to work well I think.

Personally I think it will be completely useless and all it will mean is that your info boxes (counters) will appear to slide across the map every time you adjust your level of zoom with the added bonus that at the higher levels your Front-line will look undefended except for the occasional forlorn battle indicator.


I have 20 Infantry, 5 Panzer and 3 Motorised Divisions in Northern France, fascinating I wonder how they got there? Is it part of my Battle-Plan? God only knows best zoom in and see what is actually happening and like kids in a classroom they will all run back to their correct desks.

Sorry, but there arent counters in HoI IV. What they call counters now are those little boxes below the models.
Since this keeps floating around and causing confusion, let me just point out again that HOI4 does, in fact, have counters:

"Although counters are typically square, some games use oblong rectangles as counters for individual ships, as in Flying Colors, or for land units in tactical-scale games when the designer wishes to emphasize the facing or linearity of the unit, as in the Great Battles of History series. Other variations are of course possible. The unit counters in Luftwaffe are circular, while one game covering the Eastern Front in World War II had hexagonal counters."​

You are aware that most people in these forums, when asking about counters, ask about the HoI 3 counters or something very similar, right?
