An interesting thing is the lack of air units in that screen shot, I guess is still being worked on:D
IIRC Hitler didnt announce the founding of the Luftwaffe until mid-35. There had been development activity and even some secret production before that, but I dont think the airforce was very big on Jan 1 1936. The Bf-109 began production in late 1936.

No would be on the river on the border between the provinces of Brussels and Eindhoven on that map. I can only assume that the fort there [edit ?Peirmont?] is supposed to be the Maginot line, but the most formidable part of that line finished shortly after the Lux boarder.

Your very right the Germans had been developing in secret long before 1935. The prototype He51 first flew in the summer of 1933, and the first production versions the He.51 A-1 was leaving assembly lines in April 1935. I'd think that by Jan they would have had about 100 or so in service. So I'd think it would warrant at least a unit in the 1936 scenario. Plus they would have had about 200 Do.23G's as they finished their production at the end of 1935. They developed the Do.23 as a bomber but officially announced it as a freight carrier:D

Yes, they said that all of that stuff will be customizable, so I am sure that you could change the flags. Go into paint and you can do anything. You could even make your face the flag and conquer the world.. Your face would be everywhere... :D :D

Nope. The Saarland was returned to Germany by plebiscite in 35, but it wasn't until March 1936 that Germany moved troops west of the Rhine. And when troops did move, all that Germany could spare was 20,000 troops with barely any armor or air backup.

The move, BTW, caused incredible consternation in Berlin, and disorganization in the army as the generals bickered over whether this was madness.

Is that the flag of the Wiemar Republic for Germany? If I remember my history, by '36 the NSDAP was firmly in control of the country. I know all about the prohibition against the historical German national flag but couldn't we at least get the Imperial German battle flag (complete with iron cross and eagle)?

Just MHO.

This is the first point I am really disappointed of Paradox. I know the whole story and discussions on the Hakenkreuz and the Swastika. BUT I cannot assume that the Soviet Union could have the St. Andreas flag (the current white-blue-red striped one). It is absolutely ridiculous! HoI as other WWII strategy games is set in the historical framework of the 1930's. Symbols, songs, laws, literature, etc mark a nation's history. It cannot be denied or erased. Please, at least a red flag with the iron cross in the middle!!! It is at least has to do anything with historical reality (the cross was also used on vehicles, wings of planes of the Wehrmacht and the Luftwaffe).

But to be more concrete in HoI terms: will there even Der Führer not the Head of State of Germany? Will be there no Nazi ministers from 1936 on? An what about the other evil system of mankind, the Soviet Union? Is Stalin not in the game? Or Berija, the butcher? If they are not in, HoI can be only a fantasy game, nothing else!

Actually, I'm a bit upset about the Wiemar flag as well. I'm really hoping it's only a placeholder while they figure out a `non-offensive' flag to use. It even seems a little offensive to me to whitewash things so totally. Pretending the past didn't exist won't change it.

However, I do understand the need to modify the game to be able to sell it in Germany. As far as that goes, I'd be happy with one of the Iron Cross flags. :)

That being said I'm VERY puzzled as to why the American and other non-German versions can't have an accurate flag. We don't have laws banning the use of the swastika in a computer game. Isn't this just a localization issue? Why should the German law affect what a Swedish company sells in the United States or England? Changing a couple small bitmaps seems like a minor localization change and expense compared to translating the game!

Hopefully one of the Betatesters will whip the rest of us up a replacement flag we can install before we play.

IIRC its been stated that all the correct historical personalities will be in the game, including the nasty ones like Hitler and Stalin. As far as I know, this inclusion does not violate German or other national law, as would the inclusion of the swastika.

Fintilgin, if they produce different market versions, the German authorities could conclude they were trying to evade the domestic restrictions by encouraging parallel imports or facilitating a "conversion" patch. Its not worth the risk IMO. The C-in-C flag would be a good compromise choice but I can certainly live with the Weimar flag. Its just a flag after all - its doesnt affect gameplay. And BTW - these kinds of dicussions tend to get locked up so its better to focus on other matters.

Why is everyone calling the flag in use in HoI the Weimar Flag?

The flag in use is not the Weimar flag. The flag of the Weimar Republic was the same as the current national flag of Germany. (See FOTW for details)

The flag in use in the screen shots was the co-national flag until 3 months before the time the game starts. The flag in use was adopted in 1933 and was co-official until Sept. 15, 1935; the game starts Jan. 1, 1936.
