I believe it's a term for wargamers.

Petrarca is correct.:)

From a quick Google.com search:
'Grognard' is slang for someone who likes playing wargames.

I had no idea either.

In non Grognard mode there are only Inf and Armoured figures but in the Grognard mode the Belgians have a mountain inf unit and what was a Czech inf icon has gone armoured. So my question is are we going to see more Icons in the non grognard version in the finished product i.e. mech inf, cav, mount, para? I'd hope so

Thanks for the double helping this week Patric and I'm glad that you're feeling better.:)

I've realised that the moral bar (EU style) isn't there any more:eek:, it was in the week 2 screen shot, so what gives? Has it been removed or does it only come into affect once the war starts?

Perhaps there are several tank type graphics and they just aren't all drawn yet. :)

I'm liking the terrain graphics more, mtns trees. They seem fewer and bigger than in the italian ss. Maybe my imagination but they look nicer.

I like the 'chits' more than I thought I would(old habits die hard). Either way, excellent option and 'service' to your fans of differing viewpoint :)

I'm very impressed with details (potraits, day/night, coast lines, nice flags, sublte color shading, etc.) they might not seem like much But they add a huge amout to the visual appeal and fun of the game.

4 'x' == army, no? Wow, a mountain army? :) (in Arido?)

Why are some provences/sea zones darker?

What's the lable/name " Boehm in the grognard screen Whilhelmshaven sub pack?

Just MHO.

The flag of the Weimar Republic was the same as we have now:

The co-national flags from 1933 - 1935 were the Nazi Swastika flag and the Kaiserreich or schwartz-weiss-rot flag as shown in the screenshot. The Weimar flag was the same as the modern flag and was abandoned by the Nazis for obvious reasons.

The Kaiserreich flag was abandoned due to an incident in New York in July of 1935. American communists borded a German ship -- the Bremen -- docked in New York harbor and tore down the Swastika flag (but not the Kaiserreich flag). The local NY magistrate was sympatheic and refused to prosecute arguing that the Swastika flag was not a national sysmbol but a political party flag and that flying it in NY harbor constituted provocation. Interestingly Benjamin Cardozo, the famous Jewish Supreme Court Justice condemned the decision. Hitler decided to prevent future problems of this sort by making the Swastika flag the sole national flag.

Almost all the official flags in use after 1935 contained the swastika; however there is one big exception which would IMO be a good choice for HoI - the flag of the army commander-in-chief, which is a modified iron cross. There's a picture here Using it would provide a good response to the pro-Swastika fanatics as you could just respond - well you *are* supposed to be the C-in-C, so you should have the C-in-C flag, right?

I agree

"..The German flag will probably remain the same. I'm a bit disappointed, but I also understand that some symbols
associated with Nazism are illegal in Germany, so they can't use them. The iron cross was used for Axis & Allies,
I would have liked to see that one..."

There is no problem with the Axis&Allies depiction of the German flag;
Red base, white circle, ordinary black cross (as the iron cross).

actually the depiction of the german flag is the main reason I find this game unattractive. silly huh?. red falg, white circle AT LEAST... but not the tricolour flag... come on, it is unhistorical at this time. oh well. I wonder then if political incorrect troops like waffenSS or NKVD will be depicted!!!

some european legislation on this needs to be changed for the sake of historical gaming, I say.

nice to see grognard mode though. and noce for the pics of generals... their skills will surely spark debate...

as pro-historicity fanatic, I think Keynes idea is not to be disregarded... as usual he is an infinite source of knowledge... I did not knew about the NYC incident...

i don't like the 'fortress' symbol

It looks like a cheap snowflake symbol, or a bleeched david cross..
Surely a simplified pillbox would be easy to make and more approriate ?

And why does experience start with "-100" ?
Then make it "0"..

And something else;
seeing the number of German units and their opponents (but not knowing the 'quality') I wonder if in this game you could force a small (neutral) country to peace if germany would 'only' bomb their capital without having destroyed all of their armies (as with Holland, lesser still Belgium, and to a lesser extent France 1940)..?
and what if you play the French ?
You'd continue to play even with all of France occupied but with your Colonies still intact..
This is rather unlikely..or will your 'government' change into 'free french' and you can still continue ?

Did the programmers think about this ? I am curious..

The Grognard mode is fantastic and that's what i will be playing on, looks like they are using standard symbols recognised from wargames everywhere.

The blue could well be major ports, as Kiel and Wilhelmshaven were the major German ports of the time.

Not to mention Hamburg! Huge sub contruction facilities existed there.

Hi Patrick,
..
Sorry if it sounded too harsh (?)..
Of course I understand it is all in full development..
That 's why we all ventilate our (building up) comments at this website.

..and ah..another thing springs to mind:

Germany had its best BLitz successes when its oppenent was 'surprised' (neutral countries : Denmark, Norway, Holland, Belgium, Luxemburg, and the we-are-not-at-war countries : Poland, S.U...).
Although many feared or felt that an attack would come, they never fully beefed up the defense as much as they could , as they feared this might offend the Germans and thus lead to immediate war.
..
So, in hindsight you can argue that those armies , had they known for sure that a bloody war would come, and that there would be no escape from it, would probably be having a tougher resistance to the Germans than they historically did.
(better soldier motivation, and better army preparation).
And in the game we (may choose to) play these allies..and we are not ever 'surprized' by a 'sudden' german attack....are we ?

How is this incorporated in the HOI game ?
This will not have an effect ?
Or, If you play Germany/Japan you can attack any country WITHOUT a declaration of war ?
And this gives you a bonus attack factor ?
Or if you declare war, you receive this bonus attack factor for the first 7 days only ?
And would this surprise attack bonus work for the British /French as well (thinking of the game..not of the actual historical 'phony' war 1939-1940)?

and what would be the hesitant factor to start war without war declaration ?
(stability -6 ?..what would that be in Germany/Japan ?? armed resistance ?? in 1939 ??)

Just curious..
