So I've found myself wondering a bit about how exactly the 'Scheme' action really works in terms of acquiring mmembers for a faction you've founded.

In my current game I managed to fabricate a claim on the Byzantine Empire, and figured it was time for some new management. I create a "[X=Me] for Byzantine Empire" faction, and proceed to send out my Spymaster to lure another powerful vassal into the faction. All well and good. Some time later she is successful, and I get a pop-up stating I can bully said vassal into joining my faction. I give the go-ahead, and sure enough I shortly receive a reply from the character saying he'll do it.

Splendid! I think. Except he's not in my faction when I check. Nor the next guy I do the same thing with. Both of them do, however, have a -10 relation penalty saying I coerced them into a faction. A faction they are apparently not members of.

So.. I'm confused. I know somewhere along the road in all this it said something like "blah blah gain leverage that can be used to make them join your faction" or whatever. But I have no option to do that, neither through Diplomacy or Plot or anything else I could think of.

So my question, then, is: How the eff do I actually make someone join my faction?

From what I have noticed it takes a little bit for it to happen. Same as with the coercing them to leave factions. Seems to happen within a month or two. Did you wait that long to check or did you only check immediately after you received your letter?

It seems to be highly variable, which I guess makes a certain amount of sense. The first two attempts I made did nothing immediately; but as it turns out one of them later joined my faction - though that was several months later. The other guy still hasn't over a year after the point I "successfully" coerced him. The third guy I attempted to Scheme into my faction joined it within a day or two of saying he would. So, clearly, it just varies, it seems.

Onwards, to the Imperial throne..!
