Scandinavian Folk Music

There is something that has been bugging for so long. I have been living in Sweden for 3 years now and still could not come across this.
There is this awesome fiddle music that has to do with Scandinavia(mostly Norway perhaps) but I can not find a general name for the genre or a band that spesifically does this music.
The ones with this "dark" feeling to it rather than fast tunes.
The intro music for runemaster has this like from around 8 second in the intro video. And what the hell is that instrument? Any bands you can direct me to?!?!

Feel like this is a bit of a random topic but I mean it does relate to Scandinavian folk and hence the game in a way

A few bands, most of whom are folk metal though:
Corvus Corax - Ragnarök
German folk inspired by medieval scandinavia/norse pagan themes.

Lumsk - Trolltind
Norwegian folk band, mostly relating to norwegian folk tales than norse paganism.

Wardruna - Fehu
Norwegian "dark" folk largely revolving around norse spiritualism.

Tyr - Hail to the Hammer
Faroese folk metal band, singing in a variety of languages (faroese, norwegian, old norse, english) some of whom are faroese folk songs (like Lokka Tattur, or Loke's Tale).

Annbjørg Lien - Loki
Norwegian folk musician playing the hardingfele (hardanger fiddle).

Used to be a metalhead myself for a long time. Folk metal does not really give the same feeling on this thing though. Maybe what I am looking for is not a style on its own but just a part of the Scandinavian(mainly Norge) folk music.

That Wardruna is cloer to what I am looking for I think*

edit 2 :aaaand I came across this instrument, Nyckelharpa. Things are settling.

It actually isn't a nyckelharpa, according to the composer. It is a very similar instrument though, but I can't remember what he said it was. :C

It should be noted that swedish folk music is, for the most part, from a very Christian period. Of curse that does not prevent them from containing plenty of folk beliefs.

Triakel: Nu haver denna dag (traditional, pitch black Christian song)

Gamarna: Vänner och fränder (folk/rock band, lyrics from the middle age but modernised words.)

Folk och rackare: Näs Ingars polska (lyrics probably from the 18th century)

You had it right the first time. It's a Hardanger fiddle (Hardangerfela in Swedish).

Yep, its Norweigan hardanger fiddle... or Hardingerfele. I used a norweigan hardingfele player called Britt Pernille Frøholm.

Its the same instrument that was used for the Rohan theme in Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. One of my favourite instruments and often very beautifully crafted instruments.

Oh and the music in the Runemaster trailer is cut, that song is closer to 5 mins long.

There's also band Gjallarhorn. The members come from Swedish speaking part of Finland but the music is mainly Swedish. Sometimes they use quite eccentric instruments like didgeridoo.

Speaking of culture, and I realize this is tangental, but it's top of mind for me since I just went today. I was at the Swedish Institute of America in Minnesota, and they have a fantastic Scandinavian bistro (Fika) led by a cool chef, Dustin Thompson. They were playing some cool Scandinavian folk music, which totally put me in the mood for Runemaster. Dustin looks like a Paradox player to boot (maybe an outreach opportunity).
