Well, Finland is definitively a part of Fennoskandia and thus a good candidate for membership - and the region would most likely have continued to exist as an integral part of Sweden up to this day without the Treaty of Tilsit.

Well, until the age of nationalism in late 19th century... At least the idea of independent Finland wouldn't have born any later than under Russian rule. The revolution of 1917 just gave a good chance to break free in the historical case.

Swedes are foreigners like anyone else. I don't think the situation would've had any chance to last in modern times.

Do keep in mind that the total percentage of Finnish-speaking population would have surely kept declining without the historical education and language policy during the times of the Grand Dutchy. Even if Finnish would have avoided the fate of Gaeilge, I dare to claim that Finnish nationalism might not have fared so well in a land where all educated parts of the society (except clergy) and at least one quarter of the total population speaks Swedish, and the rest are being taugh to speak it as well since it´s the official administrative language of the whole country. When combined with the strong economical and administrative ties to Stockholm, the idea of independence would have surely met strong opposition.

And during the era of nationalism the very idea of independent Finland would have been quite unacceptable for the Swedish administration anyway - by no means they would have allowed Finns to slip away as peacefully as (formerly independent) Norway was allowed to do.

Oh well, interesting subject. Sorry for the unnecessary derail of your AAR :p

Well if Finland would have stayed in swedish change, who could know that maybe Norway would have not been ahndet to the Sweden.

Just a small change.

Karelian:

Hmm, that's a good point of view. Who knows about alternative history...

I would say I'm glad it happened this way, but again, in this reality I've just been raised to a Finnish-speaking identity.
Cultural history is fascinating.

I think that he meant that Finland isn't part of Scandinavia (ethnically and linguistically), and never has been. You could say that it was a Nordic Empire, but the FInns would probably be very resistant to joining a Scandinavian empire.
Why? We share culture, history and language with Sweden (and thus we share similarietes with the other scandinavian nations).
