Yes, I had that happen in my Cherokee game when I vassalised Shawnee (in fact, the only time during that save where AI supported a vassal's independence). They didn't once attempt to do so, even though their own strength + support from other tribes was greater than the combined military strength I could muster, and throw in a period of several decades spent consistently with less than 10% of my manpower...

It seems to be only there for players to utilise, to be honest.

Ah OK, thanks. That would be a shame if they do Support Independence but then never actually use it. Maybe that will be extended in future patches.

Perhaps you could have some sort of alternate cost way of coring? Instead of coring through vassals being free how about it costing diplo points to negotiate the handover of your province to a vassal? Maybe even a small legitimacy hit instead to punish you for breaking off chunks of your realm. Perhaps add rate limiting step like a vassal only accepting a province if it has 0 OE? So only one province can be given at a time and by the time you move to vassalise(in 10 years) it's only picked up 2-3ish provinces tops.

Yep, coring using different types of MP would be an improvement, and could add a chance of an event related to the type of MP used, for a bit of flavour. For administrative ("spread the benefits of our society..."), a chance of a base tax boost, say. For diplomatic coring ("convince the locals of our rightful claims"), a chance of a free culture change. For military coring ("impose our rule by force"), a manpower boost ("locals impressed by our might").

New westernization is definitely less random than old one.
Old one: Adm lottery+comet avoidance+pray to god for stability increase events
New one: All stats matter, the distribution of monthly progress way more even this way

No, it's more random because you need an overall good monarch or it's just too slow. And you STILL have to pray for no comets because you lose 3 stability when you start to westernize, and you can never afford to raise stability while the game is draining your admin. You also can't rely on good advisors because advisors are barely affordable. A +3 advisor is basically out of the question.

This is the best idea of the thread.

There may be some element of this in 1.4.

The new Support Independence mechanic - announced for Colonial Nations - applies to any Subject. When I was experimenting, I annexed France as England (through Console). I got all their subject nations, and a little while later I got a bunch of popups that "SuchandSuch nation is supporting the independence of Orleans!" - several, one for each of those vassals.

This rather implies that those subjects can now try and break away, and be supported in that by other nations.

I've yet to follow that through and see if they actually do. They don't have Liberty Desire or anything, so I'm not sure how it would be decided. I suppose similar to PU-minors that used to declare independence, but with the support of other nations now.

Btw (i guess you have already noticed that as well, but just in case you didn't :p) - PU minors can also be supported for independence. You can ask other nations to support you while beeing the minor/vassal etc. and the nations supporting you aren't 100% guaranteed to join the war.

That'd be great! if not Pdx i would love to see a mod implementation

I'm glad that vassal feeding is no longer as viable an option, because to me it always felt really ahistorical and didn't it seemed like it didn't fit the intentions behind the game mechanics.

Timurids were never not playable, war monger or otherwise.

With my preferred style of playing no longer applicable, I think I'll be taking a break from the game.

For you, but for the average player like me? It was barely playable. With my preferred style of playing now applicable. I can finally enjoy this game to the fullest.

Yeah take a break for now. In a few weeks I am pretty sure mods that will cater to your play style will come out.

When I'm not playing MP (which is rare in of itself) I exclusively play Ironman. Ergo, no mods. Not that this behaviour is moddable anyway.

Oh, but I am SURE there would be moaning (and that would be moaning, not complaining) if they did that. "Why did my whole-China vassal declare war on me? He was my vassaaaaal!" And I would love it, because I have long supported forced vassals doing some actual backstabbing if they feel the chance is there.

I disagree with this, because there is also created vassals, and it would be silly if created vassals DOWed you.

<latecomer to the thread>

Anyone feeling generous enough to give a brief summary of what has been discussed and conclusions that have been reached over the past 26 pages?

Vassals will only buy provinces if one of the following is true:
- They have a core on the province
- They have a claim on the province
- They want to conquer the province. This last one depends greatly on the AI "personality" - military vassals will want to conquer many provinces, whereas diplomatic will not. You can see which provinces they specifically want with the aiview cheat, but not presently with any non-cheat mechanic. (Er, except trying to sell the province to them.)

If the AI won't buy a province, it will have a "-1000 No strategic interest" modifier.

That westernization is less random now has been proven. You can save your points so that you know for sure that you will be able to do it in a certain time. Where's in the pre 1.4-system you could spend 50+ years never get over 0 in stab. Bad ruler, monarch death, comets could postphone your westerniziation for decades. Thats no longer the case.

Are you sure that you've understood the new system fully?

Anyone feeling generous enough to give a brief summary of what has been discussed and conclusions that have been reached over the past 26 pages?
Quick summary:

-Protectorates can't be annexed, so they are no longer a useful tool for breaking up and eating e.g. Ming

-Countries can't be diplo-vassalized if they have greater than 30 base tax

-Vassals won't accept buying any province unless
a) they have a core on it
b) they have a claim on it
c) they have "an interest in conquering it" (which is only viewable with the "aiview" command; a rule of thumb is that militarist personalities have a longer list)
* Wiz claimed that the next patch will also cause them to accept any province they have previously owned in the scripted history

-Note that this also leaves open the even gamier approach of: ally with a nation to help it conquer most of it's neighbor, and then once said unfortunate neighbor is small enough, force-vassalizing it and fighting your former ally to return all of said nation's cores.

That's the relevant information about vassal feeding; most of the rest is the standard back and forth.

A much better fix to the problem of feeding vassals to huge size would have been to make larger vassals stronger and harder to annex.

1. Restore the ability to gift (can hardly call it sell when the AI never has money to pay) land to a vassal
2. A vassal with more territory should take longer to annex than a small vassal
3. Annexing a vassal should cost Administrative points (or perhaps Diplomacy points)...this should also scale with size
4. A vassal should have the possibility to declare independence which increases with relative size (as the vassal becomes closer to or exceeds the size of its overlord)
5. The chance for declaration of independence should double (or more) when a vassal is being annexed

In short, the problem seems to be with annexing being cheap, easy, and with little opportunity cost.
