I've recently got Windows Vista on a new computer, and I've installed Victoria and updated it, etc... to get it to a state which I enjoy playing. Anyway... everything runs fine... I can save, etc... but I can't seem to find my 'savegames' folder??? This means I can't edit those savegame files when I want or need to! I've set it so that hidden files and folders are shown... but it just won't show me it!? Any ideas anyone?

P.S. Vista is rubbish for modding... so many security messages, and 'can't do that' type things, etc... !!!

Go to Victoria/Scenarios/Savegames and click on the "Show compability files" button. Don't ask me why Vista likes to hide stuff away from you.

There is no savegames folder though!? I can't see the folder or the saved files! Vista is rubbish... I urge everyone to steer clear of it! Second to none for the interface (in my opinion), but for all the weird crazy in-depth crap... worst system ever! Can't wait to get back on my Windows XP PC in a few weeks!

Enough of the rant though... any more help at all please??

I have got it and it is easy to use. Go to the folder of Vicky, then to scenarios, then savegames, then put "Show compability files" and you will see all the savegames ;)

Look...

screenshotjp5.jpg

I clicked that 'Organize' drop-down tab, then clicked on 'Folder and Search Options', then went to the 'View' tab... and selected to 'Show hidden files and folders'. This is the screenshot I have... nothing comes up... but when I load my game I know that there are savegames that work!?

I know it is a bit late, but you should never install anything in the Program Files folder Vista. Vistas claims that for its own and will mess with anything you put in there, the best idea is to create something like a C:/games/Paradox folder.

As for your problem I have seen many threads of people who can't find their saved games, but never anyone you can't find the entire folder. You might send a PM to coreymas , he is one of the resident HOI tech experts and seems to know more about Vista than anyone I have seen on these boards.

@jonesy1289 -- browse up a bit and see if you can find a folder named 'saved games' below desktop\username, where 'username' is your vista login name.

Vista likes to do some rearranging of where things go. Sorry, not able to post a screen shot, but look in desktop\yourusername\saved games -- could be you will find the save files there or in a subdirectory.

Ahh found the folder... now where would the 'show compatability files' button be??

Also, I agree with the idea of installing on your desktop... such a better idea!

But yeah... where is this button located now?? Cheers people.

The current screen is similar to that of the screenshot I posted before. Any ideas where it would be on that screen?? If it is in properties... what tabs, etc... ?? Can't find it. I'm using Vista Home and Student or something like that?? Don't know if it makes a difference??

I hate Windows Vista!!! :D

@jonesy1289 - you wont see the 'compatibility button' unless the folder you are in has virtualized files (hidden by Vista). When you do see the button it will be to the right of the 'burn to' button.

So, I led you to the wrong place. Look here instead:

C:\Users\<your_account>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files

and then, navigate below the \Program Files folder until you find what you are looking for. If Vista has virtualized your files there, you should see the button.

 Really, it is easier to avoid this all by just installing games to C:\games....

Ahh thanks... yeah found them haha! And you're absolutely right about installing on desktop... just leave permanent programs that won't be changed in the ordinary 'program files' directory. I have no idea why they would want to make everything so awkward!?

I hate this operating system... it just does so much that is just bizarre... all for no apparent reason?? Just makes life difficult, what with error messages, warning messages, etc...

Thanks to everyone for their help and input though (especially Red Jacket)!

I have a new notebook and had the same problem here. I re-installed under D:\Games and everything is where it's supposed to be now. Why is this ***** OS messing around with my stuff. That's it I'm going back to XP.

I can't remember know what steps I had to take, but with just a little bit of internet searching you guys can easily learn what settings to change to get rid of the annoying messages asking "are you sure you want to do this" and make the Program Files folder work like it did under XP. In other words, you can get the same functionality of XP but with the new Vista OS which works just fine in my opinion. But only after you make it behave properly. :D

For me, Vista is only an improvement with it's interface. Most other things seem to be a step back. So many security messages, etc... that yes, can be changed... but should not be there in the first place! The chances are that someone messing about with certain files and folders would only be someone that knows how to change them back!

My PC is on the XP operating system... a system that does what users want it to... performs in logical steps rather than hiding files from their creators. My Laptop is on Vista... a system only improved with it's interface... and not even that much! Those little screens that show you what that tab on your toolbar is about provide little help really. So yeah... XP was just fine for me... if not vastly better.

It is not even a question of getting used to a system... I've gone from '95 to '98 to 2000 (think playing 'Worms' in MS dos also at some point!?), etc... were all just fine - but Vista is too much in the wrong direction with ridiculous messages: 'you know you are changing the name of that file that you just clicked on and clicked to rename, right?' ... erm.... YES! I hate Vista! Worst operating system ever! Can't wait to get back to my XP PC in a couple of weeks when I get home for the weekend!
