Savegame compatibility of Charlemagne vs previous version?

I just bought Charlemagne and wanted to continue my restored Roman Empire (Ironman) save first. I am able to load the save game, so I can see the nations and mouse over counties to see counts and dukes and stuff. But I am unable to click play, the button is greyed out.

When I mouse over the Play button, it says you need to select a character first. Problem is, I cant click on any characters. No character is selected by default (as they usually are when loading a savegame), and since I cant select my old character either, it's stuck as unplayable.

Is this a known issue, or has something really funky happened to me?

Is there any solution/workaround?

PS: I don't have WOL (yet).

You don't say under what version this save was started or last played. If it's from say 2.2.x I'd expect it to be compatible, yes. Earlier than that, not so much.

You can roll back to 2.2.x or other versions in the Steam beta tab, FYI.
