Saved game crash in EU 1 - Please help!

I have bought EU 1 recently (didn't know there's already EU 2 out; damn) and when trying to load a saved game, the load procedure stops at 50% and the game freezes. I have already updated to Patch 1.10, but it still crashes. With the hours you need to complete a game, that of course makes it unplayable. Does anyone know what I can do? I tried to search this forum but couldn't find a fix for EU 1, only the similar problems in EU 2 (amazing enough they haven't been able to fix that)
Should I mention: The game is published by Blackstar, German version, the patch file I downloaded is called "Europa Universalis 1.10DE.exe", my machine is 900 MHz AthlonB, Hercules Prophet 4500 TVout Kyro 2, Soundblaster Live 5.1, Win98, DirectX 8.0

it's not the same bug for EU2.

As much as goes you game, I unfortunately believe there is nothing to do. Save game gets corrupted from time to time (in any game).

Do you have an older save game? The autosave?

I don't have EU1 anymore so I can't help you

It happens with any savegame

defraggin your drive at least once per week would help alleviate this problem, otherwise, I fear your game is completely lost.

Viper37: I've been keeping the game running for a few days now, so I can get ahead somewhat. I've sent you a save of where I am right now (Katalonia 1555) and a dxdiag.txt just in case. It would be great if you'd find something. Thanks so much.
