Hey all,

Having some issues with HoI3 since the last time I played a few weeks ago. The game keeps crashing during the 'Adapting History' screen after picking either a battle to play or loading a saved game. I figured I'd try a reinstall, as I have installed many programs since the last time I played.

The problem is, in the 'saved games' folder in my HoI3 folder, there are no files!!! So, where the heck are the saved games located?!?

If you have Vista/Win7 and installed to the Program Files directory, your save files (plus some others) will be located in whatever folder Microsoft decided they should be put in (because Microsoft doesn't think you can be trusted to change the actual game files).

Try searching for the files using the Windows Search engine.

Hahah...I figured it had something to do with that. Yeah I'm using windows 7. I just reinstalled and it works fine. It removed the directories from Program Files so I thought I lost the saved games...but they are still here. Ugh, so I shouldn't install stuff to the Program Files directory? PITA.

Well, what you should really do is go back to XP, if you've got a disk.

Well, what you should really do is go back to XP, if you've got a disk.

I have it, but that ain't going to happen. One, my XP is 32 bit, two it runs a good deal better on 7.

You should never install anything into Program Files anymore. Micro$oft has gotten very protective of that folder; I install all of my games into C:\games\ myself.

NOW you tell me. Might require a format and reinstall. After playing the game all night last night, I just tried to run it again and it's crashing at the adapting history again. So, 7 is changing something when I turn off the computer. Curse you Bill Gates!!!!

So, that means I'm back to my original question...where the heck do I find the saved games so I can copy them before I reinstall 7?

Try going to the save game folder and clicking on something like "Show Compatibility Files"; it should be somewhere in the upper right on the screen.

AWESOME! That did it. Thanks! I really wanted to continue this game, all sorts of crazy alliances formed right before the war, and it's been an interesting run so far!

Have you tried turning off UAC?

I have Windows 7 and I can see my savegames just fine.

I have Vista installed, and my save games are in C:\Users\*user name*\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86).

I don't like it either, but to not let programs change anything in the program files folder is a security thing. I wish it could be configured more to my taste though.

IMHO all games should use C:\Users\[...]\Saved Games\ for savegames on Vista/7. It's easier to backup than searching through all the different folders a game might use, like the My Games folder or the AppData folder.

My experience as lvl. 2 Tech Support is that 80+% of computer users cant be trusted with security of anything.

Problem is simple - Paradox shouldnt have done something as dumb as putting default HoI3 install into Program Files when they knew that Program Files is "protected folder" in Vista and that it will stay "protected folder" in future versions of Windows - for example W7.

No - they should default to installing under program files. What they should not do is store user data in restricted system area - they should store it in the area for user data.

That's where they are on my machine as well, with Vista. However AppData is one of those "hidden" folders that you won't see unless you have that option enabled.
