  • Crusader Kings II
I haven't bought the new horse lords expansion yet but when Crusader Kings II updated itself with the patch that came out at the same time my current ironman game got corrupted. My prestige changed to -722829.296 and my piety is over 1 million. It seems like all the technologies have been more than maxed out and I'm getting +1879048.1% technology bonus to prestige and piety and I now get a +1341161 point opinion bump for being a foreigner. I've been playing this dynasty for a long time and really don't want to lose the save. Is there any way I can restore it?

It is expected that 2.3.6 IM saves will not work in 2.4.x . If you've nevertheless loaded and saved it under 2.4.x then it is likely irretrievably broken, I'm afraid.

One remote hope - check in your Steam cache folder
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\<YOUR STEAM ID>\203770\remote\save games
It's possible there's an older save file in there that's unaffected - I hope so!

This problem is also posted here, here, and also mistakenly on the CK1 forum here.

I notice that when we revert to version 2.3.6, the newer 2.4.2 saved games are clearly labelled "NOT SUPPORTED".

It would have saved us a lot of heartache if the devs did this the other way around, and prevented the update from running the old ironman games. Under what sort of circumstances does it make sense to release an update (which is automatically installed by steam) that permanently corrupts older save games?

Or did I miss an obvious warning message somewhere upon startup?

I've just loaded my Ironman game and saw that the Piety, Prestige and other numbers are completely broken. I quit the game but as it's IRONMAN mode it saved automatically to the steam cloud. If that means that my ~100h played are screwed by this then sorry to say but it's completely Paradox fault. How can it be that Ironman games aren't protected somehow by such behaviour ? Is that this hard, to implement by developers a version validator and sort of pop up message informing us that save game will be broken after loading this version (and option to revert version).
