I periodically like to play god so that I can clear up messy borders, help out realms that I'd like to see do better, or give myself an extra challenge. I generally just use the console, but now I want to change someone's liege, and I recall that the only way to do this is through save game editing.

But when I open up a save file in Notepad++ or regular Notepad, I get an unintelligible stream of characters. The entire file looks like this:

Code:
PK. ÌxMôŸ< YLn Karluk Empire.ck2BZh31AY&SYðè£jZO_÷à0Pƒâ?ÿÿð¿ÿÿú @ *@vû*\àþÚ⣠
  ð}rp‘fnÇC;ElÉdØiH.MYD@ "È5VÁiiìí²a•°RЯq¸*ÍZ uѺÃç_sg£ïgØÞW¾
”¾š]o =zakf±Ûž-·À4÷˜VÌ^*pkc/¼ ‡Qê«ï }Ø_õl Ð^½³ëÄ‚‚ê}©Òìƒ>êà \;€ wtp @ פ³Ÿ( ãÉï2z (

Less than a year ago, I was editing saves with some frequency, and I never encountered this. Was save game encoding changed in the meantime? Is there any way to view a save as actual text anymore?

They are compressed by default. There's a checkbox in the game to save them as uncompressed.
