Version: 1.28.3

DLC: All but the last 3 (Rule Britannia, Dharma, Golden Century)

Main goal: Survive until the end of the game, aka reach 03.01.1821

This is the end:

eu4_154.png

After 4k+ hours (of mindless blobbing) I looked for a different challenge. I my last games I started as a minor on VH and expanded as much as possilbe. After about 150 years I outcompeted everyone including big nations like Ottomans, France etc.
Around 1650 I faced the problem that my empire got out of hand: 3000+ development, 200+ provinces, 20+ armies, several fleets, wars and battles on 3 diffferent continents... I couldn't handle the game anymore with the intensity I would like to. Guess that classifies me as a micro-manager, if not nano-manager.

Since I was a beginner I have never reached the late mid-game or the late-game, like the age of revolution. Military units, modifiers, wars and battles - how is the look and feel of that stage of the game. Unknown to me.
So to reach the late-game I had to order myself some restrictions.

The other source of inspiration was the Civ-Series. In Civ it is possible to win the game with other means than brutal conquest, like a scientific victory. The old Civ2 from the mid 90s had a lot of exploits, so winning on the most difficult level was fairly easy for experienced players via brutal force. So some guys came up with a tougher challenge. Start as one city, don't expand and win by science. They called it "One city challenge", or OCC.

In EU4 it is not possible to win other than conquer the world, so I modified OCC to OCS ("One city survival").
I have seen other players doing something similar or almost the same lately, so I haven't invented the wheel - reinvented it at best.

Before the game I wasn't sure what I was going to expect from the AI so I choose a provice I considered fairly safe and cool to play: Salzburg
Mountain terrain (to get at least +2 if fighting for life), just 2 neighbours (Bavaria and Austria) and Austria traditionaly being friendly, peaceful and protective (because HRE-emperor status at start). Trade good is Salt. Medium-good, but stable price (3 later 3,3 ducats) and +15% defensiveness.
But Salzburg has two disadvantages: No center of trade and +35% development cost.
So the struggle for money (how to feed my army, how to collect the first 200 ducats for the castle) and spending 17,5 M-points extra (later 12,25 with full 30% development efficency after tech27 = 1745) every time I improved my province, was a constant task throughout the campaign.

No AI-nation ever declared war on me in this game.
Also I got no DOW on one of my allies with a desire (yellow strategic interest in the diplo-feedback map-mode) for Salzburg. So no direct threats on me, but still a lot to do defence-wise. Like Ottoman at my door and conquering Wien more than once.

The condition "no conquests" means: I can't take land for myself in a peace deal and keep it.
But I can declare Conquest wars and hand over to my friends whatever I get my hands on. The first one was the Conquest of Landshut and München from Bavaria. Getting the CB (= fabricating claims) is the easy part. But moreover I needed a) Austria's willingness to join my war, b) Austria's yellow or red interest in the provinces and c) the certainty to win the war. And I had to wait a very long time till this happened.
Returning provinces, release nations, all that stuff allowed by my selfmade rules.
In one case I took a province (Glogau) in a peace deal (vs Poland) and sold it to the "rightful original" owner (Silesia). But on the very same day. Netted in 800+ ducats.
1687 was the most important year, it changed everything. Dip tech 23 with "Imperialism" and "Nationalism" - CBs. From that on I got almost as aggressive as in my normal games.

During the campaign, with more and more confidence in my one city, I formulated some

Side goals:
  1. stay independent
  2. help my friends as much as I can
  3. build a big city
  4. conquer Konstantionopel
  5. dismantle the HRE
1 and 4 done, 5 failed ( I come close but made a mistake)
2 and 3 are relative goals.

I had some other temporary side goals, that I gave up because I choose to take the game in a different direction. Like become an elector of the HRE or Curia-Controller.

To 1 - the independence: Salzburg starts as a Bishopic / Theocracy. So no threats to independence. But during the game I changed to a Duchy / Monarchy, made Royal Marriages, my dynasty died out and in 1651 I got the Spanish dynasty (de Trastámara). So for 170 years until the end of the game I was threatend to fall in a PU under Spain everytime I had no heir. Even when a new ruler ascends the throne at the age of 15 ... you never know. My solution of course: Go to war. If necessary chain wars until "the sucession is safe".

To 2 - help for friends: My long time allies were Austria (from beginning to end) and Spain. But even for Brandenburg, Liege and Cologne I had a helping hand in times of our cooperation.
For now let me show you some pictures for Austria and Spain in the end:

eu4_155a.png

eu4_150.png

eu4_149.png

eu4_152.png

To 3 - big city: 136 dev is not bad I think, especially for a mountain province, but with something like Amsterdam (Farmland, cloth, CoT) way bigger cities can be build I suppose.

To 4 - the Fall of Konstantinopel to Salzburg in pics:

eu4_101.png

eu4_114.png

eu4_136.png

To 5 - the dismanteling of the HRE:

eu4_145.png

I reduced the number of electors by force-converting minors to the "wrong faith", from catholic to protestant. But I did one too many as the HREmperorship went to biggies outside Germany. First Great Britian and then my good buddy Spain. My last chance was the Spanish ruler dying. As you can see Oldenburg would become HRE. In my final war I had all remaining electors occupied up to 12.1820. But Tomás survived ...

... to be continued ...

P.S.: Feedback, comments, questions welcomed

Edit1: Minor text corrections
Addition of "the dismanteling of the HRE:"
Edit2: Addition of the first pic for Austria
Addition of "The first one was the Conquest of Landshut ..."
Restructuring of the fulfillment of the side goals
Addition of "To 1 - the independence"
several smaller additons and corrections

So I think I use this post to organize my AAR into several sections, planning to create a section for about each 50 years. I have screenshots and fresh memories for the last 100 years (ehh, ingame time I mean). But for the old times of the campaign I have to reload backups, find myself in the situation again, take new screen shots etc. So updates may take a while. Also I intend to write sections about general topics of the campaign like Idea Groups etc.

In the general forum often the opinion is expressed, that EU4 is not designed for "Tall Play" or that "Tall Play" is totally boring, because there is nothing to do but develop up once in a while.
What is "boring" or "interesting" is up to the taste of every player. I don't want to argue about that or try to influence players to change their preferred style of play.
But I am writing this report to show it is possible to create a lot of action, interesting scenarios (like 4 to 1 underdog wars) and challenges with "Tall Play". In my case "Extreme Tall Play" - just one city.

Molti condottieri, nasty Burgundy and the early Reformation

Key dates:
1445/49 Succession War for Navarra: Aragon, Naples and England vs Castile, Navarra, Brittany and Austria
01.01.1455 Salzburg starts to build a castle
1456/57 Bavarian Conquest War on Ansbach: Bavaria and Salzburg vs Ansbach and Nürnberg
1476/80 Burgundian Conquest War on Lorraine: Burgundy, Brabant, Holland and Flanders vs Lorraine, Austria, Hungary and Salzburg
27.05.1480 Burgundy sieges down Salzburg
02.02.1482 Austria loses HREmperorship (because of female heir), Bohemia is new HRE
1489/90 Salzburg's Humiliation War on Augsburg: Salzburg, Bavaria and Memmingen vs Augsburg and Hesse
02.07.1493 Start of the Reformation in Utrecht
01.12.1494 Salzburg converts to Protestantism and gets a Center of Reformation

On day 1 of the game I was able to ally Austria. Bavaria was hostile ("they desire Salzburg"), but didn't rival me. Maybe they couldn't because I was too small? Austria is a very strong ally early on, but AI-allies are somewhat unreliable. They might dishonor a Call-to-Arms in my defence because of debts, war exhaustion, occupation etc. So to get a safety start I wanted to ally my other neighbor Bavaria as well. As a Bishopic I got the generic event to choose an heir out of 6 options. The option "a foreign noble" presented me with a Bavarian Candidate. Gladly I picked him and got a +50 bonus on our relation. I started to improve relation and soon Bavaria gave up their hostility, turned friendly and accepted my proposal to form an alliance. That was all I had to do for my survival in this period.
Rivals: The game presented me two possibilities, Bavaria and Augsburg. No shooting in the foot - so a "no" to Bavaria, but a "yes" to Augsburg, as they had already annouced me as their rival. Problem - Augsburg (like me) was also allied to Austria. So no chance to start a Humiliation War.

I spent the early years renting out my army as Condottieri to all and everyone, who was willing to pay me at least 1.0 x maintenance. This started as early as May1445. Sometimes I was more interested in the money, but mostly I tried to do something useful for my employer. E.g.from Venice I just took the money and ran away as fast as I could when big bad Ottoman was coming to the Alps. Besides some action Condottieri gave me a bit of money, so I could build and maintain a Castle after 10 years.

Start of the action:
eu4_156.png
Navarrese Succession War began on 04.05.1445: Aragon, Naples and England vs Castile, Navarra, Brittany and Austria.
I am full in with my 7k-army as Condottieri for Austria. You can see me on the out-most left in Aquitaine picking up some mini-loot from the English province. Austria got railed and soon after this date had to peace out seperately.

In 1456 I joined Bavaria as a regular ally in their offensive war against Ansbach and Nürnberg, already in July 1457 Bavaria annexed both provinces.
The next highlight was the Burgundian Conquest War on Lorraine starting at the end of 1476. Burgundy, Brabant, Holland and Flanders vs Lorraine, Austria, Hungary and Salzburg.
Lorraine was a member of HRE, Burgundy not. So Emperor Austria got called in as co-belligerent for defense. But he only called Hungary and me in as his allies. The Palatinate for example was left out. I am not sure why.
The real problem was that even before that war, Hungary with the assistance of Austria started an offensive war against Poland and Lithuania. I understand that Hungary was more interested in his gains, but Austria? They did absolutely nothing in our war, but ran deeper and deeper into the Lithuanian woods to siege some unfortified and worthless provinces. With their entire army.

The one and only time - Salzburg gets occupied:
eu4_157.png
I have just lost the battle for Salzburg against 25k-Burgundians. Even against that vastly superior army I only lost 1,8k out of 8k in the 12 days of the battle.
Please note the location of the Austrian army. In the far most-east corner of Lithuania! About a year later Salzburg fell. I grinded my teeth, stood the loss of income and prosperity, as well as the devastation and war exhaustion. Half a year later it was over, as Lorraine accepeted its complete annexion.

July 1483: Shortly after losing the burden of HREmperorshop Austria goes to war against Switzerland and Bohemia
eu4_157a.png

It took a while but with the assistance of Hungary, Augsburg, the Palatinate and the usual Salzburgian Condottieri Austria got 6 new provinces. Because of "aggressive expansion" and "unlawful territory" Austria lost a lot of popularity in Germany. Augsburg got so annoyed that they broke alliance with Austria. Ok, I gladfully jumped on it and in 1489 I could finally declare Humiliation War against them. Easy win.

July 1493: Enough Reform Desire accumulated - the Reformation starts in Utrecht. After a bit of consideration I converted to Protestantism in Dec 1494 and got a CoRef.
July 1496 - the early days of Protestantism:
eu4_158a.png

4/5 adjacent provinces are already converted. Steiermark on the way.

The downside of my decision was a solid malus modifier in the relation with all catholic nations, especially my neighbours and allies Austria and Bavaria.
Hard times for my relation with Austria:
eu4_158c.png

With a little testing and number checking I got the conclusion that the threshold for my alliance with Austria was +110. Below that I got a warning flag "Austria not interested in alliance anymore. They will soon break it up." So, as you can see, yearly maximation of "improve relation" was a top priorty these years.

The safe way of playing the game ("Survival") would be to not acitvely convert, but wait for Protestantism of Reformed to autoconvert my province, sit on 0% religious unity and switch to another faith the exact day Austria would do.
So, why did I put my holy alliance with Austria at stake with the Religious conversation?
  • fun and action
  • game-wise Protestant is better than Catholic
Especially as a small nation I was limited to get papal influence as my max number of cardinals was (obviously) 1. Some boni from the Protestant church power are really good, like -20 M-points per idea, +5% morale of armies etc
  • I had a plan with it:
Speed up the conversation of Austrian provinces, Austria flips to Protestantism, Religious leagues form, Austria and me joining the Protestant league, Austria takes the lead, declares the war, we win the war, Bohemia gets kicked and Austria regains HREmperorship
But you know the game. Having a good plan is one, but the game might take a totally different direction.

Well, one has to be careful with Austria.

Section 2: 1500 - 1550
Overaggressive wars, the Rise and Fall of The Palatinate

Key dates:
1512/16 Austrian Conquest War on Savoy: Austria, Saxony and The Palatinate vs Savoy and Papal State
1514/17 Bohemian Conquest War on Hungary: Bohemia, Memmingen and Augsburg vs Hungary, Austria, Ragusa, Burgundy, Brabant and Holland

01.01.1544 Adm Tech 12 = Decesion of Secularization: Salzburg becomes a Duchy (Administrative Monarchy)

eu4_160a.png

After the advent of cannons (1479) I turned my army more and more into Siege Specialists, with half of the army consisting of artillery. Sure I had to be careful with the early cannons in battles, but as a small stack I had to be anyway. In peace times I spent my money coming from Condottieri for drilling my army at full maintenance.

Following some not so eventful years, action heated up again starting in the 1511/13 Ottoman Conquest War on Genoa: Ottoman, Bohemia and Avaria vs Genoa, Ravensburg, Lucca and England. As Bohemia was the arch-nemesis of Austria, I offered to help Genoa.
eu4_162a.png

England and me trying to get some counter-warscore by sieging Bohemian forts in Plzen and Praha. Anyway Ottomans were not very ambitious in that war: They took just 1 province (Chios / Sakiz) soon after this pic. More important: In the follow-up in Sep.1513 the alliance Ottoman - Bohemia broke.

Meanwhile in 1512 Austria declared their own war on Savoy.
Bohemia didn't waste time on consolidation and in 1514 attacked Hungary. That was clearly overaggressive, as Hungary got defended by Austria, Ragusa and strong Burgundy (+subjects). Bohemia just had two German minors on its side, Memmingen and Augsburg. Both were sieged and occupied and peaced out quickly, so already in Sep.1514 the alliance Bohemia - Augsburg broke up. Augsburg without allies.
Meaning: End of 1514 I declared my 2nd Humiliation War on Augsburg. Probably I rushed into this to prevent Bavaria from declaring an easy Conquest War on Augsburg, depriving me of my favorite rival. As my army was busy as Condottieri for ... I don't know anymore, I let Bavaria and Memmingen do the work for me and occupy Augsburg in 1515.
In 1516 Austria finshed their offensive war geting Mailand, Waadt, Wallis and Savoyen.

Shortly before the end of the Bohemian failure campaign against Hungary:
eu4_163.png

Later in 1517 Austria got Budweis and Olmütz from their war participation.

The 3rd Humiliation War on Augsburg in 1530/32 isn't worth mentioning much. Another easy victory.
1532: Southern Germany before the storms of war
eu4_165d.png

1535 saw the highly ambitious Palatinate (with the assistance of Austria) declaring war on Bavaria. When Bavaria called me to arms defensively, I dishounered, because of the Austrian participation. Meaning, my cooperation with Bavaria lasting almost a century ended at that time.
A year later The Palatinate scored a complete victory and demanded the provinces Mainz, Ansbach, Straubing and Landshut. That was way too greedy as their AE exceeded 50 with several nations. So a coalition of 7 minors formed (obv including Salzburg). At that time I announced Bavaria and The Palatinate (my new neighbor) as new rivals, they were hostile to me anyway.
Even Austria wasn't happy with Palatinate anymore and in Nov.1537 they dissolved their alliance.
Ulm immediately took the chance and declared the Coalition war. Although helped by two minors, Palatinate got crushed and 1538 had to accept the peace conditions of Ulm. The Palatinate had to release 5 nations: Mainz, Elsass, Baden, Wurttemberg and Ansbach. Everything in the West, The Palatinate were allowed to keep Straubing and Landshut. Unfortunately I have no save and thus no pictures from this exciting wars.

A little later 1540: The Palatinate is my neighbor
eu4_166.png

More trouble for The Palatinate, Bavarian seperatists at work. On 01.12.1543 The Palatinate accepted rebel demands: Oberpfalz, Straubing and Landshut defected to Bavaria. What a rise and fall in less than a decade for The Palatinate. From 7 provinces to 11 provinces in their peak, just to be reduced to a 2pm in the end. The total looser of the1535/36 war, Bavaria, had to let Ansbach go, but got the more valuable province of Oberpfalz.

Let's take a look to the religious situation in those years:
eu4_165b.png

The CoR in Utrecht and another one for Reformed got killed.
Do you remember my clever 8-step plan from 1496 ?
Step 1 - Speed up conversation of Austrian provinces : Got stucked
Step 2 - Austria converting protestant: After regaining the HREmperorship in 1541 impossible for the next years or decades
Plan now: Wait until the end of the Age of Reformation (1610 probably), eventually convert back to Catholicism after.

The diplomatic situation:
eu4_168a.png

My alliance with Austria stabilized somewhat. After my secularization in 1444 I also had the option of Royal Marriage. Rival Palatiante is eclipsed in 1444 already.
Before 1550 I allied Saxony and Baden to go with my old buddies Austria and Memmingen. More safeguard against rebuilt Bavaria. You never know ...

Feud with Russia, everyone on Hungary and a lot of new good heretic friends

Key dates:
1574/78 Bohemian Conquest War on Teutonic Order: Bohemia, France, Savoy, Papal State and Brandenburg vs Teutonic Order, Austria and Saxony
1575/76 Badense Conquest War on The Palatinate: Baden, Utrecht and Salzburg vs Palatinate, Augsburg and Saxony
~1585 Religious League form, Bohemia takes lead of Protestants
1586/87 4th Humiliation War on Augsburg: Salzburg vs Augsburg
1596 Spain and Salzburg arrange Royal Marriage and alliance

The period starts with regional conflicts:
eu4_169.png

The feud of Bavaria and The Palatinate continued. Both declared conquest on Ansbach. In 1556/57 Bavaria and Frankfurt vs Ansbach, Memmingen and Utrecht, as well as 1556/57 The Palatinate, Trier and Hesse vs Ansbach, Memmingen and Utrecht. I participated with Condottieri for Memmingen. On 09.07.1556 Memmingen got occupied by Bavaria, had to peace out, an was forced to break the alliance with me. On 15.07.1557 Bavaria annexed Ansbach again, winning indirectly against Palatinate.

1565
eu4_170a.png

In 1558 Bavaria reconquered Württemberg and in 1559 Mainz stole Heidelberg from the Palatinate. Meanwhile in 1559 I welcomed Ulm as my new ally.

Nothing to do in Germany, so Salzburg fights in Eastern Europe:
eu4_171.png

As Condottieri for Brandenburg I am on my way to the Baltic, as in 1570 Russia declared Conquest War on Denmark: Russia vs Denmark, Sweden, Oldenburg and Brandenburg
Five years later it ended with a minor victory for Russia, they got Lifland and Wenden.

Back to Southern Germany:
eu4_172.png

Since 1574 Nassau is my new ally. Over the years Bohemia upgraded his allies and replaced the weak German minors by a serious gang: France, Savoy, Papal State and Brandenburg.
So in 1574 Bohemia started Conquest War on Teutonic Order: Bohemia and his gang vs Teutonic Order, Austria and Saxony. On 26.09.1578 it ended painful for Austria - they lost Savoie and Milan. Saxony got shrunk to two provinces.
In 1575/76 I got busy myself in the Badense Conquest War on The Palatinate: Baden, Utrecht and Salzburg vs Palatinate, Augsburg and Saxony. Phyrric victory: On 29.08.1576 Baden annexed Pfalz, just to return it on 23.01.1577 to The Palatinate by Emperor's demand for "unlawful territory". Joke of the game: 16 days after its resurrection on 08.02.1577 The Palatinate fell in a PU under Bavaria.
On the pic I am waiting for Baden to peace out, so I can help Austria and friends with Condottieri again.

And deeper into Russia:
eu4_173.png

As Condottieri for Burgundy I am fighting the Russians again in the 1579/1583 Russian Conquest War on Hungary: Russia vs Hungary, Moldavia, Ragusa and Burgundy. For the first years it looked very good for us as in July.1581 Burgundy occupied Moskva. But Hungary missed to peace out in time and had to take more and more loans. This war ended without territorial changes.

But Hungary had to declare bankruptcy and ...
eu4_174.png

... was attacked even more.
1583/1588 Ottoman Conquest War on Hungary: Ottoman vs Hungary, Moldavia and Burgundy
1584/1589 Bohemian Conquest War on Hungary: Bohemia, France, Savoy, Papal State and Brandenburg vs Hungary, Moldavia and Burgundy
In 1586 brave and loyal Burgundy bailed out and lost some provinces back to France. In the end Hungary had to give a lot to Ottomans and Bohemia.

In 1586 I was finally able to declare 4th Humiliation War on Augsburg. Easy win as it was just one on one. The problem was rather I had to wait more than 50 years for this chance, because we had a truce resulting from the 1575/76 Baden-Palatinate war. Before that Augsburg was in Ragusa's Trade League, then guaranteed by Bavaria and last protected by Burgundy as Defender of Faith (DoF).

1590: Finally the Religious Leagues have been formed
eu4_175b.png

Sometime in the years 1582 to 1584 Bohemia converted to Protestant. In 1585 or 1586 The Protestant League started and Bohemia quickly took the lead. Some majors yet on the side-line of the Leagues. I joined the Catholic League (as forerunner of Protestantism !) because as ally of Emperor Austria I would have been drawn into the war on the Catholic side anyway.
Every nation in the Protestant League turned "hostile" to me, while every nation in the Catholic League turned "friendly" to me, which gives a nice +50 modifier for accepting alliance. That made nations, usually looking down upon little Salzburg (because of solid negative modifiers for Salzbug's army and navy strength), serious candidates for allies, despite my "protestant heresy". So in 1587/88 protestant Ulm broke our alliance and I could get catholic Arch-Bishopic Cologne as new ally.

The religious situation:
eu4_175c.png

A normal war in those years:
eu4_175d.png

While waiting for the 30 Years War to start I got involved another time with the Russians in the 1589/94 Russian Conquest War on Denmark: Russia vs Denmark, Sweden, Oldenburg and Brandenburg. I can't remember who rented the Salzburgian Condottieri, but after 5 years of back and forth in the Baltic White Peace was concluded.

The European situation around 1600
eu4_179.png

Meanwhile both Leagues enlarged. Joining the Catholics: Spain, Portugal, Brandenburg and Hungary. Joining the Protestants: Great Britain, Russia, Switzerland and Savoy.
In 1596 I took the chance to upgrade two allies. I kicked the minors Baden and Nassau, allied fellow league member Brandenburg and as a highlight also Spain following a Marriage.
With the blocks Bohemia, Ottoman and Russia in the East, Great Britain, France and Savoy in the West, Bohemia could have started the 30 Years War in those days. Sure Spain, Burgundy, Austria together with medium sized German nations like Liege, Cologne and Brandenburg were ready to put up resistance. But Hungary and Lithuania looked more like weaklings for the Catholic League.
Instead Bohemia preferred to declare easier smaller wars, like in 1595 the Bohemian Conquest War on Teutonic Order: Bohemia, France, Savoy and Papal State vs Teutonic Order, Baden and Augsburg. Quickly the last province of TO got annexed and Baden was forced to release Switzerland.

The diplomatic situation 1597:

I am very curious as to where your development will end up.

Section 4: 1600 - 1650
Bavarian Wars, European Wars and World Wars

Key dates:
25.07.1598 Austria reelected as HRE, Friedrich V following Karl II
1610/13 Salzburgian Conquest War on Bavaria: Salzburg and Cologne vs Bavaria, Cyprus, Frankfurt, Ravensburg and The Palatinate
01.02.1620 Age of Reformation ends, Salzburg loses CoRef
1620/38 Portuguese-British Colonial War: Portugal (+2 col), Spain (+4 col), Baden and Austria vs Great Britain (+3 col) and Savoy
1626/30 Ottoman Conquest War on Hungary: Ottoman, Tlemcen and Palembang(Indonesia) vs Hungary, Oldenburg, Austria and Spain (DoF) (+5 col)
08.11.1627 Austria loses HREmperorship (because of female heir), Brabant is new HRE
End of 1627 Austria converts Protestant, Salzburg leaves CathLeag
1633/34 Salzburgian Conquest War on Bavaria: Salzburg, Cologne and Austria vs Bavaria, Magdeburg and Ravensburg
~1638/39 HRE diet: Religious Leagues disbanded, Catholic official faith

The HRE situation and the Leagues in 1606:
eu4_180a.png

Joining the Catholics since 1597: Denmark and Verden; noone joined the Protestants. But Austria's HREmperor Friedrich had just a female heir, so most likely in case of his death the throne would pass to Brandenburg.

Once more: Dispute in the Baltic region
eu4_181.png

1604/09 Russian Conquest War on Denmark: Russia vs Denmark, Sweden, Oldenburg, Brandenburg and Burgundy (DoF). I helped Denmark with Condottieri, we could keep the losses small and on 26.02.1609 Russia got just Riga.

Meanwhile Bohemia looked for expansion in the East on the expense of Lithuania. 1605/11 Bohemian Conquest War on Lithuania: Bohemia, France, Savoy, Mecklenburg and Papal State vs Lithuania, Moldavia, Saxony, Augsburg and Burgundy (DoF). Most noteably Saxony got destroyed in this war, on 24.01.1609 they had to transfer their last two provinces to Wurzburg. Burgundy was overloaded with these two wars as DoF, peaced out seperately and on 14.03.1609 had to release the nation of Brabant. The war ended on 03.03.1611 with Bohemia annexing some Lithuanian provinces.
As the extinction of Saxony left a diplomatic relation slot open, in 1609 I allied Liege. I could have taken Burgundy aswell in those years, but I preferred to have HRE-elector allies. Did I have the idea to reconvert to Catholicism and become HRE myself oneday?

Time to start the 1st Bavarian War:
eu4_183.png

1610/13 Salzburgian Conquest War on Bavaria: Salzburg and Cologne vs Bavaria, Cyprus, Frankfurt, Ravensburg and The Palatinate
I used the Conquest-War-CB to be more flexible. So on 12.11.1611 I could hand over the free city Frankfurt to Cologne. I dragged on the war, to be sure Cologne would core its new province. On 24.07.1613 I finished the war, demanding Bavaria to release The Palatinate as independent, aswell as Ansbach and Wurttemberg. Did I have a generous moment or was it just the desire to weaken rival Bavaria?
Else, Brittany and Wurzburg joined the Protestant League. In 1615 I got the news, "Augsburg is not longer a valid rival".

Almost a repetition of 1606:
eu4_186.png

Condottieri for Denmark in the 1616/21 Russian Deus Vult War on Denmark: Russia vs Denmark, Sweden, Oldenburg and Brandenburg. After 5 years of fierce resistance on 01.01.1621 Russia could claim Reval and Mittau. Again just a small loss in this war, but over the decades it added up. Denmark is left with just 3 provinces in the Baltic region.
Else Memmingen joined the Catholic League; Wurttemberg, The Palatinate and Ansbach the Protestant.

Going south for a change:
eu4_188.png

For the first time my troops fought for Spanish money. In 1620 the Portuguese-British Colonial War started: Portugal (+2 col), Spain (+4 col), Baden and Austria vs Great Britain (+3 col) and Savoy.
Just shortly before on 02.07.1622 Savoy got the provinces Brescia and Genoa with the help of Bohemia and the Papal State. So in the screenshot Austria, Baden and my Condottieri have just done our job and completely occupied Savoy. On 18.12.1623 it was separately peaced out and had to return the province Genoa to Genoa.
Around 1625 Baden and Austria white peaced out of this conflict, but the main clash continued for many years in both parts of America, until this World War in 1638 finally ended - undecided.
Meanwhile Venice joined the Catholic League; Mecklenburg the Protestant.

1627 - eventful year in the HRE:
eu4_190a.png

On 08.11.1627 Austria's Friedrich V died, handing over the Archduchy to his younger sister Eleanor. The HRE elected Brabant to be the new Emperor. So Brabant automatically took the lead of the Catholic League. At the end of 1627 Austria converted Protestant, preferred to stay out of the Leagues and so I left the Catholic League as well. With this neutral behaviour I could keep my alliances with my Catholic heretic friends, most importantly Spain.

1630 - 5 different wars at the same time:
eu4_192.png

First, the left-over from the Portuguese-British Colonial War, the two British continental provinces of Maine and Contentin stayed occupied until 1638.

Second, Bohemia continued its strategy to pick on easy targets with massive help instead of starting the 30 Years War.
1625/30 Bohemian Conquest War on Denmark: Bohemia, France, Papal State and Mecklenburg vs Denmark, Sweden, Oldenburg and Brandenburg. I supported Brandenburg with Condottieri, but on 09.02.1630 Brandenburg, largely occupied, had to separate peace out and was forced to release Magdeburg and Anhalt. Bohemia wrapped up Danish Baltic and on 09.12.1630 finished the war by taking Goldingen and Klajpeda.

Third, Ottomans were hungry on Hungary's land again.
1626/30 Ottoman Conquest War on Hungary: Ottoman, Tlemcen and Palembang(Indonesia) vs Hungary, Oldenburg, Austria and Spain (DoF) (+5 col).
Although Tlemcen got occupied by Spain and had to leave the war in 1628, this campaign became a major success for the Ottomans. They occupied half of Austria, including forts in Kärnten and Wien, forcing Austria to peace out later in 1628. On 08.08.1630 Ottomans could get half of Hungary, despite the participation of Spain.

Forth, the 1628/32 Burgundian Conquest War on Alsace: Burgundy vs Alsace, Bavaria, Nassau, Ravensburg, Brabant (HRE), Papal State, Brittany and Mecklenburg. Even though Burgundy all alone faced a respectable alliance, they succeded and were able to annex Elsass and Brussels on 10.10.1632.

Fifth, the 1629/31 Cologne Deus Vult War on Saxe-Lauenburg: Cologne, Liege and Verden vs Saxe-Lauenburg, Friesland, Poland, Brittany and Mecklenburg. Cologne was the dominating power in Northern Germany in those years and intended to expand even more. As my army got unemployed after the Brandenburgian peace out and was located in Belgium, I helped my allies Liege and Cologne in this war. On 13.03.1631 Cologne could start to integrate the provinces Lüneburg and Hamburg.

2nd Bavarian War:
eu4_195.png

1633/34 Salzburgian Conquest War on Bavaria: Salzburg, Cologne and Austria vs Bavaria, Magdeburg and Ravensburg. Finally it was possible to call in Austria with the promise of land against Bavaria. With the additional help of Cologne, it was not a too difficult war. On 03.12.1634 I demanded from Bavaria to hand over Landshut and München to Austria. So after 190 years I reduced the number of my neighbors to one.
Else, Wurzburg with help from Savoy enlarged from 2 to 5 provinces, getting Nassau, Pfalz and Mainz in 1635.

Looking at the religious situation:
eu4_197.png

Indeed not many Catholic provinces left in the HRE. Just in North-West Germany and some on the coast of former Pomerania. The leading German powers, Austria and Bohemia, both Protestant. The neighbors in the West and North, Burgundy and Denmark, both Reformed. Catholicism was mostly uphold by the Bishopics Cologne and Liege and a bit by Prince-Elector Brandenburg.
League joins: Friesland into the Catholic; Magdeburg, Anhalt and Genoa into the Protestant.

Around 1638 or 1639 it happened, what was looming for years now:
eu4_198a.png

HRE diet proclaimed: Religious Leagues disbanded, Catholic announced official faith.
Meaning protestant electors like Bohemia lost their Electorate. Bohemia is to blame itself for this. They could have started the 30 Years War for several decades counting especially on Russia and Ottomans. At least when Austria left the Catholics in 1627 (and with them their human brain Salzburg?!).
So after the long period of indecision the HRE was left in a weak state.
Liege and Cologne couldn't take the Emperorhip because of Bishopics. Brandenburg had a female ruler, and the rest of the German Catholic princes were only minors. Outside powers, foremost Great Britain and Spain, had not enough popularity to be elected. So weaklings like Brabant had to take the Emperorship.

The next European War:
eu4_200.png

1639/42 Burgundian Conquest War on France: Burgundy, Verden and Liege vs France, Savoy, Switzerland, Lübeck, Wurzburg and Bohemia. Again Burgundy had no fear to fight against a large numbered alliance. Although I was in with Condottieri for Burgundy, on 29.12.1642 they could annex Orléans, but not more.

In 1644 Cologne jumped on Wurzburg. Within short time Wurzburg was utterly defeated and had to cede 4 of its 5 provinces to Cologne on 21.10.1644 (Nassau, Mainz, Pfalz and Würzburg).

War in Southern Europe and North Africa:
eu4_202.png

The 1646/49 Spanish Crusade against Tlemcen: Spain (+5 col) and Venice vs Tlemcen, Mamluks and Ottomans. My Condottieri for Spain had alot of things to do, as Ottomans and Mamluks came with serious armies to Southern France, Venice and Southern Italy. On 16.12.1649 the conflict ended with a White Peace, as the occupations balanced out. Tlemcen taken by Spain, Venice taken by the Muslims.

Salzburg, we have a problem:
eu4_205a.png

My Duke past his 60s, two heirs died in a short time. Most likely he would die hierless, but I didn't want to get the Austrian dynasty (von Habsburg). I suspected Austria would use any moment of weakness on my side and use the "Claim Throne" action, if given any chance. So I had two options: a) divorce Austria and Brandenburg or b) marry into a nation with more development. Looking at the relation with Austria, a divorce looked way to risky. They would have broken alliance most likely (see next pic).
So I renewed my Royal Marriage with Spain, giving me a Trastámara as next Duke. I figured that Spain would not have much interest to force a PersonalUnion with the distant Salzburg. In retrospect that was a good decision, as much later Austria used "Claim Throne" against Genoa, while Spain left me in silence with these tricks for the rest of the game.

The diplomatic situation:
eu4_204a.png

Very good relation with Austria, but not good enough to risk a divorce (= break Royal Marriage).
Allies: Austria, Spain, Cologne, Brandenburg and Liege
Rival: Bavaria

What an odd setup in Gernany, official Catholic faith yet most fokls Protestant.

Section 5: 1650 - 1700
Bohemian implosion, farewell to Condottieri and welcome to Nationalism and Imperialism

Key dates:
1650/51 Salzburgian Humiliation War on Bavaria: Salzburg and Austria vs Bavaria, Magdeburg and Cyprus
28.02.1651 Matthäus von Daun dies, Johann III de Trastámara new Duke of Salzburg
10.12.1653 Spain gets PU over Portugal
1663/68 Coalition War on Bohemia: Poland, Bavaria, Mecklenburg, Austria, Hesse, Saxe-Lauenburg and Cologne vs Bohemia and Wurzburg
1668/69 Salzburgian Humiliation War on Bavaria: Salzburg and Cologne vs Bavaria and Ulm
07.03.1669 Brabant loses HREmperorship (extermination), Friesland is new HRE
1681/85 Badenese Reconquest War on Switzerland: Baden, Spain (+5 col) and Portugal (+4 col) vs Switzerland, Austria and Ulm
05.05.1682 Friesland loses HREmperorship (extermination), Saxe-Lauenburg is new HRE
01.01.1687 Dip Tech 23 = Nationalism and Imperialism CBs become available
1687/88 Salzburgian Nationalist War on Ravensburg: Salzburg and Austria vs Ravensburg, Ulm, Genoa and Silesia
1689/91 Salzburgian Nationalist War on Augsburg: Salzburg and Austria vs Augsburg, Lituania and The Knights
1698/99 Salzburgian Nationalist War on Bavaria: Salzburg and Austria vs Bavaria and Wurttemberg
1699/1700 Salzburgian Rebel Support War on Mainz: Salzburg and Bavarian Seperatists vs Mainz and Memmingen
1699/1700 Salzburgian Imperialist War on France: Salzburg, Spain (+5 col) and Portugal (+5 col) vs France and Switzerland

The new period started with a left over from the last. The old Duke Matthäus died indeed heirless on 28.02.1651 and the de Trastámara dynasty with Johann began to rule Salzburg. So now everytime the ruler had no heir, I threatened to fall under a PU by Spain. Eventually someone could challenge this in a Succession War.

3rd Bavarian War and everyone on Denmark:
eu4_2.png
1650/51 saw another fairly short Humiliation War on Bavaria: Salzburg and Austria vs Bavaria, Magdeburg and Cyprus. As since 1634 I didn't neighbor Bavaria anymore, I couldn't fabricate a claim on them. So no claim - no conquest CB - nothing to give to Austria. On 07.02.1651 I finished the war, Bavaria had to give me money, war reps and trade power.

Hard times for Denmark and his allies Brandenburg, Hungary and Verden. First Sweden with the help from the Papal State tried an Independence War in 1649. Then in 1650 Bohemia with assistance of Savoy attacked Denmark for conquest and in 1651 Russia with Ansbach declared a Deus Vult War. Both Bohemia and Russia desired the Baltic province of Ösel very much, but that was occupied by Sweden for a long time.
Brandenburg and Hungary were the real victims of these wars. On 13.08.1652 Brandenburg surrendered to Sweden, just to been occupied by Bohemia thereafter. On 11.05.1653 Bohemia got 3 provinces in the peace deal (Leipzig, Wittenberg and Neumark). Shortly before on 13.11.1652 Hungary had to give 5 of its northern provinces to Bohemia.
Many years later in 1658 the other wars ended. Sweden got its independence, while Russia took Gotland and Finnmark.

The battle between Cologne and Trier seen on the pic was in the 1652/54 British Conquest War on Brittany: Great Britain (+4 col) and Cologne vs Brittany, Trier and Ansbach.
In the end Cologne could annex Trier and Great Britain got almost all European Brittany, giving them a severe bridgehead on the continent.

Brandenburg occupied yet again as the Burgundy - France feud continued:
eu4_5.png
The 1658/61 Burgundian Reconquest War on France: Burgundy, Brandenburg, Liege, Verden and Lithuania vs France, Brabant, Lübeck, Bohemia and Savoy. I participated once more with Condottieri for Burgundy. The war had two winners. Burgundy got Bréda from Brabant and 4 provinces from France in the end. Bohemia taking 4 provinces (including Königsberg) from Lithuania, as well as Uckermark and Berlin from Brandenburg in seperate peace deals.
As a consequence of its countinous weakness I dissolved my alliance with Brandenburg in Sep 1663.

Pay Day for Bohemia:
eu4_8.png
Bohemia picked up a lot of AE from recent wars. A coalition formed: Poland, Bavaria, Mecklenburg, Austria, Hesse, Saxe-Lauenburg and Cologne. I couldn't join it, as Bohemia's AE for Salzburg with a little too low. But it needed an external push to start the Coalition War.
In 1662 Great Britain with assitance of The Papal State and Friesland attacked France. Bohemia, as well as Savoy and Lübeck, helped France in the defence. As this war wasn't going well for Bohemia, OPM Poland dared to start the Coalition War. I participated indirectly with the standard solution for the first half of the game: Condottieri.
In 1668 the British succeeded in their war, they got 4 provinces in North-France, the Papal State already in 1666 Brescia and Novarra from Savoy.
On 06.07.1668 Bohemia was utterly defeated and had to return 6 cores to Poland. Also they had to release Saxony and Silesia in their original borders.

Noteworthy was the 1666/71 Venetian Conquest War on Hungary: Venice and Brabant vs Hungary and Burgundy, as on 07.03.1669 Brabant lost Antwerp, its last province, to Burgundy.
Resulting in:
eu4_12c.png

Friesland was elected new Emperor in the HRE.

More a little note was the 4th Bavarian War. The 1668/69 Salzburgian Humiliation War on Bavaria ended on 11.10.1669 with the same peace terms as in 1653: money, war reps and trade power.

The European part of the world war around colonies:
eu4_11.png
In 1671 the Spanish-British Colonial War began: Spain (+5 col), Portugal (+4 col), Venice and Baden vs Great Britain (+4 col), Friesland, Sweden and Papal State.
My Condottieri for Spain were busy to occupy British-West-France. On 27.05.1676 Spain got Nantes and Bas-Poitou from GB in the peace deal out of it.

A strange feeling - side by side with the Ottomans:
eu4_14.png
1673/78 Burgundian Conquest War on Savoy: Burgundy, Liege and Ottomans vs Savoy, Bohemia and Russia. Ottomans were joining because of the Great Power action "intervene in war". So Burgundy got rewarded for the risky, if not overrisky, attack into two Great Powers with the help of the largest army of that time - the Ottomans.
My Condottieri for Liege fought deep into Russia once more. After being completely defeated again Bohemia had to sign a seperate peace on 28.03.1676. 3 more cores were returned to Poland, Ottomans got also 3 provinces. On 18.06.1678 the main war with Savoy ended, with Burgundy getting 3 provinces as well.

The region of South Germany in 1677:
eu4_13a.png

Cologne collected some provinces lately. 1658 Magdeburg, 1664 Bamberg, 1665 Bremen and 1677 Cassel. As a consequence they rivaled Austria. So in Jun 1677 I dissolved my alliance with Cologne.
Mainz expanded east meanwhile. They could annex 1670 Ansbach and 1672 Nürnberg.
Their clash came in the 1678/80 Colognian Conquest War on Mainz: Cologne, Liege and Verden vs Mainz, Genoa, Memmingen and Silesia. On 28.09.1680 Cologne got Heidelberg and Ansbach. Mainz survived as an OPM, holding only Nürnberg.

Bohemia shrinking even more and the Spaniards coming to the Alps:
eu4_18a.png
1679/83 Ottomans Border War on Lithuania: Ottomans vs Lithuania, Bohemia and Augsburg. Although Bohemia was severly weakened from passed wars, they didn't revoke their guarantee for Lithuania, so they had to fight for a lost cause once more. On 25.10.1683 Ottomans could take over several provinces in Carpathia and Ruthenia mostly from Bohemia.
Noteworthy again a smaller war of Burgundy. Their 1681/82 Conquest War on Friesland: Burgundy and Liege vs Friesland, Brandenburg and Augsburg. On 05.05.1682 Burgundy annexed OPM Friesland completely. So as in 1669 the HREmperorship changed because of extermination. Saxe-Lauenburg took over to rule the HRE.

My brothers in war: In the 1681/85 Badenese Reconquest War on Switzerland, Spain (+subjects) fought for Baden, while Austria defended Switzerland. I decided to help Austria, but tried to vary the form a bit. I split my Condottieri, 10k for Austria and 10k for Switzerland. At that time my generals were biased with 4/6/0/1 and 3/3/4/4 pips respectively.
So by keeping both stacks together the first general took over in battles (10 pips) while the second could bring in his 4 pips for sieging.
The 175k-stack of Spanish troops looks frightening, but in fact Spain and Portugal were not very enthusiastic to fight, stay or even siege forts in the mountain territories of the Alps. Probably because of their constant low manpower. Patience was the key in this defensive war and attrition our best friend. After some years the Swiss could white peace out Spain and on 14.09.1685 even annex Baden.

Mainz migrating east and another Brandenburgian failure:
eu4_20a.png
To compensate for its losses from 1677 Mainz declared in 1683 Conquest War on Bavaria: Mainz, Memmingen, Silesia and Genoa vs Bavaria and Wurttemberg. On 28.09.1685 Mainz succeeded taking over Ingolstadt, Regensburg and Oberpfalz. Archrival Bavaria reduced to an OPM now and in 1688 I was allowed by the game to rival Mainz.

Presumably Bohemia went bankrupt in those years and Brandenburg tried to capitalize on it. But it was a miscalculation as in the 1684/87 Brandenburgian Reconquest War on Bohemia: Brandenburg and Memmingen vs Bohemia, Savoy and Saxony, the attackers got smashed. In the end Brandenburg lost 60% of its territory. On 25.09.1687 Bohemia got Ruppin, Greifswald and Stolp, Saxony got Anhalt and Potsdam and Mecklenburg got back Rostock.

Welcome Nationalism and Imperialism:
eu4_24.png
With the long awaited advent of Dip Tech 23 on 01.01.1687 I was able to declare war on everyone with the idea to conquer provinces for my friends, mostly Austria. I started to gobble up the South German minors.
First was the 1687/88 Salzburgian Nationalist War on Ravensburg: Salzburg and Austria vs Ravensburg, Ulm, Genoa and Silesia. On 10.12.1688 Austria got Ravensburg. On the maps Ulm is still free, it just is represented with almost the same color as Austria unfortunately.
Second was the 1689/91 Salzburgian Nationalist War on Augsburg: Salzburg and Austria vs Augsburg, Lituania and The Knights. That's why our troops were sieging in Lithuania. On 28.09.1691 Austria annexed Augsburg.
The occupations in the neighbor country, Russia, happened in the 1688/93 Russian Deus Vult War on Denmark: Russia vs Denmark, Burgundy and The Knights. Some years later on 10.03.1693 Russia finally got Ösel, the last Danish holding in the Baltics.

Austria under severe pressure:
eu4_27a.png
Before the time of the screenshot, Ottomans made a very clever move with their 1693/96 Conquest War on Cyprus: Ottomans vs Cyprus and Ragusa. This way they bypassed their scripted guarantee on Ragusa, valid from the start of the game. On 21.09.1694 Ottomans annexed 6 provinces from Ragusa on the Balkans including Buda and Bacs, as well as on 29.04.1696 Cyprus.

Highly unpleasant was the 1694/98 Savoyard Nationalist War on Genoa: Savoy, France, Bohemia and Russia vs Genoa, Austria and The Papal State.
Quickly Russia occupied Genoese-Crimea, but they had no interest in that land and transferred the occupation to Savoy. Meaning Russia and Bohemia would invade in East-Austria next.
The zone of action:
eu4_26c.png

I tried to help as much as I could with Condottieri for The Papal State. My stack is full 30k because of the policy giving +50% available mercs. Although the situation looked grim again, we could keep the losses small. Just Budweis had to be given back to Bohemia on 29.12.1696 by Austria in a seperate peaces deal. On the other side France was forced to return Caux to neutral Burgundy for the permission to leave the war.
Even without Austria we could hold our own and on 15.07.1698 a White Peace was signed. Highly superior allies as Bohemia and Russia are of limited help, when the war leader (Savoy) is in a geographical isolated situation and can be occupied entirely, as here by neighboring Genoa and Papal State.

The diplomatic situation in 1700:
eu4_34c.jpg

Huh, Bavaria from archrival to best friend again?
Something must have happened:
eu4_29a.png

First in my 1698/1699 Salzburgian Nationalist War on Bavaria: Salzburg and Austria vs Bavaria and Wurttemberg, on 18.01.1699 Austria got Straubing and Württemberg. As Straubing was its last province Bavaria was exterminated.
But not for long, as shortly after I declared the 1699/1700 Salzburgian Rebel Support War on Mainz: Salzburg and Bavarian Seperatists vs Mainz and Memmingen.
Some years before I used my spy network and some money to launch the "Support Rebel" diplomatic option versus my new rival Mainz. As the rebels (Bavarian Seperatists) fired I could declare war and help them with my troops. Easy win and on 19.02.1700 Mainz had to accept rebels' demands. Independence for Bavaria with the provinces Ingolstadt, Regensburg and Oberpfalz. Shortly after I finished the war against Mainz and Memmingen for money etc.
So because of the CB, Salzburg got an automatic alliance with the reborn Bavaria. Well, in Aug 1700 I dissolved this alliance again.

As a side note, almost at the same time I started a small war on behalf of Spain. 1699/1700 Salzburgian Imperialist War on France. On 18.03.1700 Spain annexed Limousin, they didn't want the other province Auvergne.

The religious situation:
eu4_33.png
Not so messy as in 1636 anymore. Cologne with religious ideas showed zeal and converted some provinces back to Catholicism.

Short comment on Section 5.
Screenshots look a bit different than in former sections.
Who is to blame? The new 1.29 launcher or the mods? Whoever, some of the graphic mods I used earlier don't work anymore when I rollback to 1.28.
Research and writing time took longer as situations get more complicated. War participations, seperate peace deals, occupations and annexations of provinces etc.
At least I have abandoned my old habit to post a raw text version and then to edit the post for days:rolleyes:.

If you, dear reader, feal overwhelmed by the details, I propose to read the beginning with the "key dates" and the end starting with "the diplomatic situation" of each section. That should give a good overview what has happened in a period.
I have also added a link to the Table of Contents to every post covering a period. So it should be possible to jump from any section to any other.

A note about the fate of France. On 27.12.1700 Burgundy annexed Auvergne, its last European province. They continued to stay as an OPM (Benguela) in South West Africa until in 1714 Liege buried them.

Time for some regional changes again (1704):
eu4_226.png

Ulm is still a free city. It is just displayed in the same color as Austria. In these years Bohemia was guaranteed by Russia, but had some weaker allies to declare on.
So I started the 1702/03 Salzburgian Imperialist War on Ragusa: Salzburg and Austria vs Ragusa, Bohemia and Poland. I kept the war small and 26.03.1703 Austria got Pilsen and Prag, as well as Budweis, that was lost in 1696.

Next was the 1705/07 Salzburgian Nationalist War on Bavaria: Salzburg and Austria vs Bavaria, Bohemia, Ulm and Switzerland. On 04.06.1707 Austria could annex Cheb/Eger, Rudohori/Erz and Hradecko/Königgrätz from Bohemia in addition to Regensburg and Oberpfalz from Bavaria.

Three European Wars and Bohemia couldn't get enough:
eu4_227.png

A lot of work for the Ottomans to get a tiny island. 1710/14 Ottomans Imperialist War on The Knights: Ottomans and Qara Qoyunlo vs The Knights, Venice, Oldenburg and Denmark. After winning sieges in Denmark, Oldenburg and Venice, they could annex Rhodes finally on 03.06.1714. Only Rhodes as Crete stayed Venetian. Ottomans were unable to naval invade the neighboring island as well. Sigh.

Very similar was the 1711/14 British Imperialist War on Denmark: Great Britain (+5 col) and Sweden vs Denmark, Burgundy and The Knights. After all Britain could occupy Sjelland (Danish capital), but lost control on their holdings in West France. Initially GB desired the North Sea islands Faeroerne and Shetland in the possession of Denmark. But during the war they lost interest. Sigh. So in the end on 27.06.1714 just Sweden got Bähuslen from Denmark.

Now to our war, as Savoy tried the same, which was already unsuccessful in 1694/98.
1710/14 Savoyard Nationalist War on Genoa: Savoy, Bohemia and Russia vs Genoa, Austria, Saxony, Salzburg and The Papal State.
Three differences to the 1694/98 edition:
a) Saxony was on our side
b) I offered Genoa an alliance after they got declared upon. Soon I got the defensive call to arms and could join to help Austria to fight Bohemia and Russia another time. Probably I considered a 30k-Condottieri-stack too clumsy, as it can't be split.
c) Most of the Russian troops were very deep in East Asia up to Kamchatka, because in the 1704/09 Russian Deus Vult War on Chagatai: Russia vs Chagatai and Ming, just on 10.10.1709 peace was signed.

eu4_228.png

eu4_229.png

So after 2 1/2 years we had Savoy completely occupied, Bohemia almost completely and started to invade Western Russia. On 08.02.1713 Bohemia was redeemed in seperate peace: Saxony got Ruppin and Berlin, Austria got Oberlausitz, Ödenburg, Pressburg, Trencin and Hont. Well, Genoa transferred exactly the Slovakian provinces from Bohemia to Austria, that Ottomans desired most. Intentionally I tried to prevent this Austrian-Ottomans border constellation in the last wars.
After occupying forts in Smolensk, Ryazan and Moskva in the following years, on 26.12.1714 Papal State took over Milan from Savoy, ending the main war too.

Trouble followed on the spot:
eu4_230.png

Ottomans were getting greedy and were interested in a lot of Austrian provinces up to my border!

So in Oct 1714 they started the 1714/19 Ottomans Imperialist War on Austria:
eu4_231.png

Ottomans, Avaria and Palembang(Indonesia) vs Austria, Great Britain (+5 col), Genoa, Salzburg, Saxe-Lauenburg (HRE), Lithuania, Poland, Brandenburg, Mecklenburg, Silesia and The Papal State. Gladly OPM HRE Saxe-Lauenburg had enough courage to defend the Empire with his 6 allies. Even Spain joined in with a 21k-stack of Condottieri for Papal State. Pure soldier numbers were not looking so bad initially, but as usual the GB-army stayed at home and was of very little help. At least New Foundland (!) showed up with a 20k-stack.

Ottomans invaded into East Austria, started to siege Wien (capital and war goal) and made serious progress.
Until the Mega-battle of Wien, lasting several weeks:
eu4_232.png

Ending on 06.05.1716:
eu4_233.png

Oof, that was close!
Although we had about 200k vs 150k at some time around Wien, all AI allies were too cowardly to attack the Turks. Mighty Salzburg had to do the first step. And I had to pay a high price for it. My best general (6/4/6/2) died in the fight and I got +8,44 WE, as I stayed in from beginning to end. Ok, at least I got +18,5 AT for this heroic act.

eu4_234.png

Winning this battle meant we gained time. It took month for Ottomans to recover and reorganize, although they had 500k-troops not participating in the battle.
In this war I started to make regular use of my accumalated army professionalism, which was close to 100% from around 1625, via the "Slacken Recruitment Standards" action. 2 years of manpover for -5% AP. Very helpful.

Somehow the main action happened in Lithuania afterwards. Strange, because Ottomans were not bordering Lithuania anymore and couldn't take provinces from them.
eu4_235.png

The occupation of Kaunas well defended, Ottomans!
But this pic shows Ottomans' strength and weakness as well. On the one hand they were able to bring massive troop numbers to battles; they fielded more than 800k soldiers still after 4 1/2 years of war, on the other hand they exhausted their man power with massive exceeding the supply limit. Although they had ideas and policies reducing the max attrition to 2%, they run out of man power the more the war dragged on. Despite completing their ranks with 250+ mercs.

As a partial success on 04.01.1719 Ottomans could seperately peace out Genoa and annex Crimea and Matrega. In Mar 1719 I broke my alliance with Genoa, it was designed only for common defense in wars anyway.
Late in the war on 20.01.1719 the Ottomans actually managed to occupy Wien. I couldn't prevent it this time, as almost everybody run to Lithuania. Sigh. But also Ottoman sent their troops away and I was able to liberate Wien fairly quickly on 02.09.1719.
That almost leveled the war score and so:
eu4_236.png

White Peace on 03.12.1719
Key in this defensive war was again patience. Waiting for chances to siege back some stuff, eventually come upon weak stacks and watch the foe to lose man power by sieges, replacements from battles and exceeding supply limit. If the war score is low (-10 to +10) after 5 years the "length of war" modifier takes care that even highly superior enemies end on "low war enthusiasm" and are willing to white peace out.

Meanwhile a familiar picture - Bohemia completely occupied:
eu4_237.png

This time by Burgundy and Denmark. Another funny episode of the game:
On 06.03.1721 the last Rurikovich died and Russia fell in a PU under Bohemia. Burgundy contested it. 1721/26 Russian Succession War: Burgundy, Denmark and Liege vs Bohemia and Russia. As Russia held a development of ~1500 contrary to ~430 of Bohemia, they had 100% LD. So they didn't do anything to help and that's why Bohemia got entirely occupied very soon. But when Burgundy and friends tried to invade into Russia, to conquer the wargoal Moskva, the Russians of course defended their homeland. Successfully, as on 19.04.1726 Burgundy gave up and allowed Bohemia in the peace deal to keep its PU.
Last chapter of the story: Just 2 months later on 16.06.1726 Bohemia released Russia! Lol.
Of course Bohemia had no chance to ever win a Russian independence war, so the release was a correct move. But all the blood, sweat and tears of the 5 years of Succession War - for nothing.

Side note on Hungary. It was resurrected on 26.12.1721 with 3 provinces by Venice after winning a war versus Ragusa.

7th Bavarian War and Savoy:
eu4_238.png

After some years of recovery I started the 1725/26 Salzburgian Nationalist War on Bavaria : Salzburg and Austria vs Bavaria, Ulm and Hungary. Quick campaign and on 24.04.1726 Austria was able to annex Ulm and Ingolstadt. So up from now white colored Ulm is really part of the Austrian realm.
Turning the tables in Italy: 1724/26 Genoese Nationalist War on Savoy: Genoa and Saxony vs Savoy and Switzerland. I rushed, so we (ehm Austria) could get our share, thus I declared the 1726 Salzburgian Imperialist War on Savoy: Salzburg and Austria vs Savoy.
Clear result: On 27.07.1726 Genoa got Cuneo, Montferrat and Nice and soon after on 05.11.1726 Austria took over Piedmont; Savoy exterminated.

Around early 1730 I broke my alliance with Liege. No special reason, but Liege was extremely focused on its colonies in Africa and Asia, so I considered them little help with my business in Europe. Two friends remaining: Spain and Austria. No valid rivals anymore.

Next attack on Bohemia:
eu4_239.png

Time for another expansion into Bohemian lands. The 1730/33 Salzburgian Nationialist War on Bohemia: Salzburg and Austria vs Bohemia, Silesia, Mecklenburg, Saxe-Lauenburg and Brandenburg. Sneaky Poland crossed my plans of an easy war and declared the 1730/32 Polish Reconquest War on Bohemia: Poland, Saxony, Saxe-Lauenburg and Ragusa vs Bohemia and Mecklenburg. So it was more a race with Saxony and Poland to first occupy key provinces, rather than beating weak Bohemia. I started with occupying Silesia, which I could peace out on 01.05.1730 already. After I controlled the desired Bohemian lands in North Germany I concentrated on the remaining war allies.
Info about the HRE:
eu4_240.png

Saxe-Lauenburg still holding the emperorship. Both Saxe-Lauenburg and Mecklenburg were electors with a war score < 100%. Just a too juicy chance for me!
On 09.04.1731 I peaced out Brandenburg for money etc, but then on 18.05.1731 I peaced out Saxe-Lauenburg and demanded "Enforce Religion". So they flipped form Catholic to Protestant, not the "Official Faith". Meaning loss of HREmperorship and Electorate. On 17.11.1731 I did the same with Mecklenburg, which was elected the successor on the throne. "Enforce Religion" and
eu4_241.png

Oldenburg took over.
At the latest now I played with the idea to dismantle the HRE one day. Otoh the situation inside the HRE was quite stable, as Austria could take over HRE provinces without returning them to the "Unlawfal territory"-demand of the Emperor.

Back to the main wars: On 27.11.1732 Poland got 8 provinces from Bohemia and on 13.04.1733 I finished my war as well, with Austria getting Niederlausitz and Sternberg. Austria had no interest in more provinces. Sigh.

Brandenburg jumped on weakened Bohemia as they did unsuccessfully in 1684/87 and started its 1733/36 Reconquest War on Bohemia: Brandenburg vs Bohemia. This time they did better and on 30.09.1736 Brandenburg annexed Greifswald, Neumark, Stolp and Tuchel.

Sooner or later it had to happen - Ottomans' 2nd attack on Austria:
eu4_242 .png

Ottomans and (some days later) Avaria vs Austria, Silesia, Denmark, Great Britain (+5 col), Russia and Salzburg. Otoh it had to be expected, knowing the aggressivness of Ottomans with a militarist ruler. Otoh Austria meanwhile cleverly allied Russia, so the troop numbers were really looking good for our side, despite the usual problem with GB. Especially compared with the 1st war from 1714/19 I wasn't worried at all this time and aimed for territorial gains for Austria. The inclusion of Russia meant also a real second frontier, a much tougher one than Lithuania in the 1st war.

eu4_243.png

In the first two years we (the defender!) made significant progress. I could occupy key forts in Hungary, on 17.04.1735 Zemplén and on 16.08.1735 Timishvar. On 22.04.1736 Avaria had to seperate peace out, after Russia occupied their capital. Unfortunately the (neutral) Avaria troops didn't move away from the fort in Lubnie, I just successfully resieged for Russia. Ottomans had 800k soldiers, but already 232 mercs and just 160k manpower in that moment.

Back and forth in the next two years:
eu4_244.png

eu4_245.png

At some time we could control more provinces in Hungary and Ruthenia, at other times the Ottomans sieged some stuff back. Battles also evened out. But our alliance had more resources than Ottomans. Manpower and money becoming more and more a problem for them. Denmark was really helpful with their entire army, but they went home for some time to deal with nasty rebels.

The 5th year:
eu4_246.png

Ottomans were down to 550k troops now and we sieged several forts. I sat on Kiralyföld, the Russian on Crimea and the Austrians tried on Constantinople. Even the Brits tried a naval invasion on Kotor. But their escorting navy was too weak, not very much Heavies in it. So this invasion was intercepted by the Ottomans' fleet. Most of our war score (+22 out of +25) resulted simply from holding the war goal Wien.

As everybody got exhausted and no real progress was made anymore, it was peace again:
eu4_247.png

So Austria got 2 provinces (Spisz and Pest), Russia got one and Albania was released with 3 provinces.

Sardinia, Albania, Switzerland and Hungary:
eu4_248.png

Over the years Spain declared several overseas wars in America, Africa and in the East Indies. Not always successful, as on 24.05.1735 they had to release Sardinia after losing a war to Malacca, which formed Malaya soon after.

During the long war with Ottomans, around 1738, my heir Paris died, younger than 25 years. So after the Ottomans peace I threatened to fall under a PU again. I looked at easy follow-up wars. Hungary would be a wonderful target. Allied with Switzerland, so 5 provinces ready to integrate into the glorious Austrian-Salzburgian Empire. But ... Austria wasn't willing to join my war because of debts. So I declared on fresh released Albania.
1740/42 Salzburgian Imperialist War on Albania: Salzburg vs Albania.
On 14.06.1742 the new heir Leonhard was born. One day after I sealed the peace deal with Albania for money etc. Not much later on 21.04.1744 old Duchess Heilwig died.

And Austria? Too much debt to join my war, so they decided to start the same war themselves?!
1740/41 Austrian Imperialist War on Hungary: Austria and Great Britain vs Hungary and Switzerland. Military wise no problem, but Ragusa was greedy on Hungarian land as well.
1740/41 Ragusian Nationialist War on Hungary: Ragusa and Poland vs Hungary.
Although it would have been easy, AI Austria was to dumb to occupy all provinces in time, denying Ragusa anything. So Hungary was shared. On 08.01.1741 Austria annexed Breisgau and Baden from Switzerland and on 10.03.1741 Bellowar from Hungary. Ragusa could take over Fejer and Somogy from Hungary on 27.05.1741. Result: Switzerland and Hungary got exterminated.

Not the easiest target, but a high rewarding: the 1745/47 Salzburgian Nationialist War on Saxony
eu4_249.png

eu4_250.png

Soldiers numbers looked a bit scary, but we had a geographical advantage. Two of the enemies in the South, two in the North, seperated by the Alpes and some forts. Enemy number 5, Sweden, in fact never showed up in this war. I started with sieging and conquering the war goal (Sachsen) and then the other Saxonian provinces, including their second fort in Berlin. That was already achieved in Oct 1745, as you can see. Next was Poland. As Austria was already doing its job on 18.04.1746 I could seperate peace them out. Then we turned our attention south to Venice, occupying some provinces including the fort in Treviso.
Last was Genoa:
eu4_251.png

After this battle Venice had seen enough and on 26.11.1746 I could "persuade" them to leave the war. I besieged Genoa, but it wasn't even necessary to conquer it. Some months later Saxony was so demoralized that they were willing to cede a big part of their territory.
On 16.03.1747 Austria got 8 new provinces including Sachsen and Berlin. Saxony survived as an OPM holding Ruppin. I cases like this I abused the "very hard" setting. AI nations get a lot of bonuses on VH, like -33% AE reduction. If I would have taken such a big chunk for myself I would have in high danger of running into a coalition. But Austria, with all the bonsues - no problem with coalition.

The religious situation:
eu4_252.png

Not so much different from 1700. Bigger nations with Religious Ideas like Cologne, Austria, Spain or Russia do convert their provinces. Slowly, maybe ineffective, but they do convert. Burgundy with Humanist Ideas doesn't convert anything, despite sitting on tons of ducats.

The opinion map mode for Austria shows the diplomatic situation around 1750:
eu4_256.png

Well, taking lots of lands makes a lot of jealous neighbors.
Albania is shown in green. They liked Austria very much, as former was willing to enter an alliance around 1745. So far Austria was the only ally of Albania. With this constellation Ottomans would obviously attack Albania as soon as their truce was about to end in Feb 1755. So we better prepare for this, don't we Austria?

Albania crisis and march to Kong

Key dates:
1752/55 Salzburgian Nationalist War on Saxe-Lauenburg: Salzburg and Austria vs Saxe-Lauenburg, Brandenburg (co-belli), Silesia and The Papal State
11.1755 Start of Golden Era
1755/60 Ottomans Imperialist War on Albania: Ottomans vs Albania, Austria and Salzburg
1762/65 Salzburgian Nationalist War on Saxony: Salzburg and Austria vs Saxony, Poland, Mainz, Memmingen, Genoa, Venice, Silesia and Sweden
1763/68 British Imperialist War on Malaya: Great Britain (+6 col) and Austria vs Malaya and Ottomans
1769/73 Salzburgian Imperialist War on Venice: Salzburg, Austria and Spain (+10 col) vs Venice, Burgundy and Brandenburg
1769/74 British Imperialist War on Denmark: Great Britain (+6 col), Oldenburg and Verden vs Denmark and Austria
11.10.1775 Burgundy forms France
1776/80 Salzburgian Imperialist War on Kong: Salzburg and Austria vs Kong and Ottomans
1781/83 Salzburgian Imperialist War on Poland: Salzburg and Austria vs Poland and Ragusa
1783/85 Salzburgian Imperialist War on Songhai: Salzburg and Spain (+10 col) vs Songhai and Tlemcen

So, where do we go? Let's take a look at what lands Austria desired:
eu4_94.png

After the successful campaign against Saxony in 1745/47, Brandenburg looked like a good target. Austria would take 6 provinces, giving us access to the Baltic Sea. Problem: all Catholic nations were additionally defended by the DoF. In those years either Great Britain or Spain. Here I could make use of my evil deed from 1731, the force conversion of Saxe-Lauenburg. I declared on the Protestant OPM and co-belligerent Brandenburg.

1752/55 Salzburgian Nationalist War on Saxe-Lauenburg: Salzburg and Austria vs Saxe-Lauenburg, Brandenburg (co-belli), Silesia and The Papal State.
eu4_95.png

Note, at the same time another war happened: The 1752/57 Colognian Nationalist War on Mecklenburg: Cologne, Liege, The Papal State, Mainz and Oldenburg vs Mecklenburg and Burgundy. With a lot of persistence on 18.05.1757 Cologne could annex Lübeck and Wismar.

In my war things were going well in the beginning. I besieged and occupied Silesia and on 23.03.1753 seperate peaced them out for money etc. Almost at the same time Austria won the siege of Lauenburg, so from 28.03.1753 we controlled the war goal. Next was Brandenburg. On 03.04.1753 I sieged down the capital Stettin (level 1) and on 25.09.1753 Kolberg, their level 8 fort. But then ... Austria lost interest in all but one of the provinces! In the middle of the war without a change of their ruler. If a militarist personality is replaced by a more moderate ruler this might happen, but in this case I have no idea, what made Austria's mind change. Sigh!
I sieged down the second level 8 fort on 20.09.1754 in Tuchel. So on 26.09.1754 I seperate peaced Brandenburg, giving (only) Neumark to Austria. I also demanded the force conversion of Brandenburg, meaning their loss of electorate. It was more a preparation for future wars, denying Brandenburg the protection of the Catholic DoF.

The HRE in 1754:
eu4_96.png

sparsely populated.

The southern part of the war:
eu4_97.png

As Austria had no interest in Papal lands (Milano, such a nice province, sigh!) I let the Pope get away for money etc on 15.06.1755. A few days later on 21.06.1755 Lauenburg was released from the pain as well. A somewhat failure campaign, not because of military mistakes, but because of Austria's fickleness.

The Albania crisis: Late in 1755 the truce Ottomans-Albania was about to end and Albania still only allied to Austria. Ottomans' interest:
eu4_98.png

Maybe Spain could help? If I declare on Albania, call in Spain with the promise of land and then feed all Albanian provinces to Spain - that would deny Ottomans this critical target. Sure, I should declare in a moment I am still in another war with Austria on my side, so they can't defend Albania against me. That wasn't the problem. Spain even had interest in Albania.
But my truce with Albania, resulting from the 1740/42 no-heir-so-lets-prevent-PU-War was lasting longer, up to Feb 1756. Hmpf!
Austria preparing for the war? Well, they upgraded the fort in Tirol to level 8, but Wien, Prag and Trencin stayed on level 3 or 2 respectively. Sigh.

So it was inevitable: The 1755/60 Ottomans Imperialist War on Albania: Ottomans vs Albania, Austria and Salzburg. At least Ottomans had interest in only 5 of Austria's provinces, excluding Wien. Obviously I offered Albania an alliance to help and got the call to arms in Aug 1755.
eu4_99.png

Quite a depressing perspective, if you look at these numbers. Austria was already low on manpower and complemented its army with mercs.
The start wasn't bad, because as usual Ottomans' armies were not in a good position. On 16.10.1755 I occupied Zemplén (level 2), next to Austria, and on 29.04.1756 Kotor (level 4), next to Albania.

eu4_100.png

For some time we could defend Albania. My army were true Space Marines - pumped up with military ideas and policies. Also note my 6/5/3/3 general and otoh a weak general for Ottomans, the Sultan Selim III himself.

eu4_101.png

I tried to bluff the Ottomans by simply making use of the Albanian mountains. But with 150k AI Ottomans was taking the "challenge" of sieging Lezhe. At least I inflicted more than double casualties on the attacker plus a nice post battle attrition.

For some time it was just defeat and retreat. Ottomans made progress with occupying Lezhe on 19.01.1758, liberating Zemplén on 18.07.1758 and liberating Kotor on 02.10.1759.
eu4_102.png

And further occupying Wien (level 3) on 22.12.1758 and Prag (level 2) on 13.05.1759. Only hope was the constant reduction of Ottomans manpower.

Battle of Oberpfalz:
eu4_103.png

Surprising turn - quite a number of Ottoman troops went out of Austria, leaving nice targets and the chance for us to resiege lost provinces. Like on 07.04.1760 the liberation of Prag.

Battle of Wien:
eu4_104.png

followed by its liberation on 13.06.1760. I have no idea why Ottomans played so passively. Maybe because they didn't need the forts in Wien or Prag anymore. The 5-year-mark was approaching and Albania was entirely occupied, so they could demand whatever they liked.

A few days before we could resiege Pest, they peaced out just in time:
eu4_105.png

04.07.1760 Ottomans annexed Pest from Austria and Vlore plus Lezhe from Albania, letting them survive as OP (Durres). In addition they forced to break the alliance Austria - Albania. Thank you, as that opened the door to get rid of the Albania problem in the future. My first post-war action was to break my alliance with Albania.

Going on the offensive again:
1762/65 Salzburgian Nationalist War on Saxony: Salzburg and Austria vs Saxony, Poland, Mainz, Memmingen, Genoa, Venice, Silesia and Sweden
eu4_106.png

My idea was to integrate the 3 OPMs Saxony (holding Ruppin), Mainz (holding Nürnberg) and the free city Memmingen. As we faced an alliance of 8 nations some work had to be done.

First I have to report about the other war raging in Germany and Italy as well. The 1761/66 Colognian Nationalist War on Saxe-Lauenburg: Cologne, Mainz and Liege vs Saxe-Lauenburg, Ragusa, The Papal State, Mecklenburg and Brandenburg. Later, in 1763, Cologne annexed Rostock from Mecklenburg, meaning the extermination of the former HREmperor. On 11.05.1766 they ended the war and forced the conversion of Lauenburg back to Catholic.

Similar to the 1745/47 edition of the Salzburg-Saxony war, I concentrated on the war goals first and then the neighboring enemies. On 02.06.1762 I could occupy the capital fort from Mainz (=Nürnberg) and on 06.06.1762 the capital fort Memmingen. Silesia was again quickly defeated and on 30.10.1762 peaced out seperately. On 13.11.1762 Ruppin (=Saxony) fell, Poland was next.
eu4_107.png

As I controlled the key provinces of Poznan (16.01.1763 level 2 fort) and Dobrzyn (19.03.1763 capital fort), Poland was willing to leave the alliance of defenders on 23.05.1763.
Remaining: Venice, Genoa and Sweden.

Meanwhile in Italy and Albania:
eu4_108.png

Venice attacked Albania, profiting from the lack of Austrian protection forced by the Ottomans. The 1761/62 Venetian Imperialist War on Albania: Venice and Saxony vs Albania, Saxe-Lauenburg and Ragusa. Two days after this pic on 03.12.1762 Venice took over Donji Kraji, Hum and Travunia from Ragusa and Durres from Albania. So Albania was removed from the map again, no easy target left in the Balkans for the Ottomans.

After that and my campaign in Poland I moved south, to deal with Venice and Genoa.
Occupying the level 4 fort in Trevisio on 14.11.1763 and some unfortified provinces was enough to offer seperate peace to Venice on 13.12.1763. On to Genoa: Their level 7 fort capital was sieged down on 30.04.1764. So on 08.05.1764 I could ask Genoa for money etc. Swedish troops regulary showed up in Northern Germany in 1764/65, but Austria took care of it. Although it wasn't necessary I started an expedition to occupy Sweden. I marched with my army through Poland, Russia and Swedish-Finland to the Swedish main lands. On 20.03.1765 I occupied the capital Stockholm (level 1), on 21.05.1765 Kalmar (level 2) and last on 01.09.1765 Bohuslän (level 2). Thus Sweden had to agree to a seperate peace deal on 09.09.1765 too.
Nothing left, but the 3 occupied OPMs. So on 23.09.1765 in the main peace deal with Saxony I transferred Memmingen, Nürnberg and Ruppin to Austria. 3 more HRE princes exterminated.

Some rest for my soldiers, but Austria entered an unfortunate adventure.
1763/68 British Imperialist War on Malaya: Great Britain (+6 col) and Austria vs Malaya and Ottomans
eu4_109.png

Malaya was no small fish, but with 858 dev #10 of the biggest countries in that moment. Even without the Ottomans AI-Europeans are simply not good enough to wage such wars in Indonesia successfully. With the alliance Malaya - Ottomans the war was totally lost on day 1.

After Austria was at peace in Oct 1765, Great Britain cried for their help and they accepted the CtA. Honorable, but stupid, as they had to fight the Ottomans one on one.
Initially they could surprise the Turks and on 25.04.1766 occupy Zemplén (level 2). Probably Ottomans' troops walked east and returned only after Austria's entry into the war.
Malaya in Wien:
eu4_110.png

But it was the war leader Malaya himself, who came to Austria, sieged and conquered Wien on 15.08.1768. Very lucky for Austria that Malaya was willing to sign a seperate peace on 26.09.1768 for money etc, so they lost no territory to Ottomans. Soon after the main conflict ended on 19.11.1768 with Great Britain ceding some provinces from their Trade Companies in Indonesia to Malaya.

Europe in 1768:
eu4_111.png

After cleaning up the minors in South Germany my next goal was the (Austrian) expansion into France. Burgundy was allied to Spain, but the protestant Venice offered a fine opportunity:
1769/73 Salzburgian Imperialist War on Venice: Salzburg, Austria and Spain (+10 col) vs Venice, Burgundy and Brandenburg.

Brandenburg was a junior partner of Burgundy, as they fell into a PU on 10.06.1768. Spain was interested in Venice's holdings on the Balkans, so I could call them in on the promise of land. Statistics looked very good, as we had ~800k soldiers to ~400k for the enemies (excluding armies of the Spainish colonial nations). But this war had a number of problems. First, most of Spain's troops were in Africa and returned much slower than I thought. Second, as Salzburg doesn't share the same culture group as Venice, I had to declare Imperialist war, meaning the war goal was their capital Venice. So I faced the task to somehow pass the strait Trevisio-Venice. Here I had to pray for the Spanish fleet to help against the respectable Venetian fleet or for AI Venice to commit a mistake. Third and that was unexpected, Austria was soon distracted by a defensive CtA from Denmark, who were attacked by Great Britian soon after in 1769.

I started in Northern Italy occupying the key fort of Trevisio (level 4) on 26.11.1769. Unfortunately Austria concentrated on Brandenburg, controlling their capital Stettin on 19.08.1770. Maybe this was because of the proximity to Denmark and other participants of the other war, they were dragged into. That gave Burgundy a free hand to invade into Austrian-Switzerland, including the occupation of Bern (level 4) on 31.03.1770.

Some battles in Switzerland:
eu4_113.png

and the bulk of the Burgundian army moving to Spain. So I could liberate Bern on 10.05.1771 and win the siege of Alsace (level 6 fort) on 13.10.1771.

Rushing to Venice:
eu4_114.png

because, Florida (not Spain!) sent their fleet to the Adriatic Sea and provoked the Venetian fleet to move away from the Gulf of Venice in Nov 1771. So I could pass the strait and quickly occupy Venice (level 1) on 23.12.1771. A major success in this war; ticking war score on my side now, Venice getting a lot of war exhaustion and losing a lot of war enthusiasm from now on.

Austria still busy in the North:
eu4_115.png

Sieging Brandenburg and the Low Countries.

But Spain:
eu4_116.png

Not looking good! In 1771 and early 1772 forts in Labort, Burgos, Madrid (capital), Toledo, Valencia and Narbonne were occupied by Burgundy. Spain had only outdated level 2 forts at that time. Because of their enormous land mass (3000+ dev) they luckily remained in the war and slowly moved over enough of their 750k troops from Africa to conquer everything back up to mid 1773.

I stayed in the Eastern France region, fought some battles together with Austria and finally on 14.07.1773 I could occupy Franche-Comté (level 6).
Time for a big peace deal on 06.09.1773: Austria got Elsass(Alsace), Metz(Trois-Evechés), Lothringen(Lorraine), Freigrafschaft(Franche-Comté) and Savoyen from Burgundy, Altmark from Brandenburg and Spain took over Durres and Ragusa from Venice.

The story of the contemporaneous war: The 1769/74 British Imperialist War on Denmark: Great Britain (+6 col), Oldenburg and Verden vs Denmark and Austria.
eu4_117.png

Great Britain was interested in the Danish North Sea islands Faeroerne and Shetland again (like in the 1711/14 war). The best way to wage this war is obviously to fabricate claim(s) on the island(s) and declare Conquest War. But the AI prefers to declare Imperialist War, completely ignoring the geographical situation of the opposing capital. To reach Sjaelland they have to control the Öresund sea tile. But AI-nations, even with gigantic fleets, don't like to go into these inland seas (like Spain avoiding the Gulf of Venice). In the 1711/14 edition GB had Sweden to that job for them. But this time they were completely helpless.
At the start of the war Denmark called in Austria, but not yet Burgundy. In 1770 Denmark (and Austria) occupied the OPMs Oldenburg and Ostfriesland (=Verden) and seperately peaced them out. They controlled British West-France in 1771/72, while GB could naval invade Faeroerne successfully; congratulations!
Freed from the burden to defend against Salzburg and Austria, on 18.09.1773 Burgundy could join on Denmark's side. They had to do nothing. Denmark transferred their occupations of the West France provinces to Burgundy. In 1774 GB tried a naval invasion in Norway, at least. And who repulsed them? Not Denmark, they preferred to stay with their army on Sjaelland, not Austria, too lame to react to such sudden changes of war, but ... mighty Salzburg, offering Condottieri. That is the 20k-stack you see in Jytland on the pic. Result: On 10.12.1774 Burgundy got Maine, Anjou, Alencon, Caen and Contentin from GB. For doing nothing.
All in all a second very stupid war from GB within a very few years.

After coring Maine, Burgundy could form France on 11.10.1775. Big Blue back in the game. To distinguish it from the original France (exterminated in 1714) I will refer to it as France II or France (fka Burgundy).

Lets have a look at West Africa: Kong!
eu4_118.png

Note: Futa Jallon belonged to Brittany, having exiled to Panama (!).
What was so interesting about Kong?
They had one ally: Ottomans. Kong neighbored Spain, which had a lively interest in all Kong's provinces, belonging to the Ivory Coast Trade Node. Spain had meanwhile conquered/colonized the West Sahara provinces Tuat and Taudeni.
So I formed my plan. Walk over with my entire army from Europe via Gibraltar, through Spanish West Sahara and Songhai to one of the Spanish West African provinces. Helpful here the age of revolutions ability "improved force march". Declare war on Kong, thus involve the Ottomans, call in Spain on the promise of Kong land, occupy all Kong provinces and rush back trough Spain and France to help Austria against the Ottomans. Spain could help either through North Africa and then Egypt or through their two provinces in the Balkans. Having occupied Kong completely early would grant me the ticking war score and a war leader, who would be soon out of enthusiasm. So, if things should go badly in Austria, I always could peace out against Kong.

In 1776 I started my march to Kong. Three days before my army arrived in Do, the province right to Futa Jallon, I faced an unpleasant surprise. One that makes the game so loved and hated.
Spain declared war on Kong!
The 1776/81 Spanish Imperialist War on Kong: Spain (+10 col) and The Knights vs Kong and Ottomans. Exactly the same constellation, I wanted to make use of. Not that Spain had any serious troops close or even fairly close to Kong. It was just an accident, they declared war so short before I would have done.
So, what to do now? Give up my plans?
After some consideration I decided to stick with my intention and declared the war against Kong, just without Spain.
1776/80 Salzburgian Imperialist War on Kong: Salzburg and Austria vs Kong and Ottomans.

Ottomans in two wars:
eu4_119.png

With the occupation of Kong, that I realised in Nov/Dec 1776, I denied Spain any war score against the war leader, so they were almost forced to fight against the Ottomans. Just as they would have been my direct ally.
How were things looking after that and the elimination of Kong's army?
eu4_120.png

I wanted to wait to call in Austria until Ottomans would try to reach Salzburg. That happened soon after, but Austria had a difficult time with 200k soldiers facing about 500k of Ottomans. Unfortunately the majority of Ottomans' armies came to Austria first and not to Africa.

Spain fought on the sea and in the Maghreb:
eu4_121.png

Lesson for Ottomans: There is always a bigger fish in the pond!

In 1777 and 1778 it was more a defensive war for Austria and my Salzburg. We had to fight back the Ottomans at home. The Sultan himself leading his troops into defeat:
eu4_122.png

We made decent progress in Hungary and on the Balkans with the occupation of Zemplén (level 2) on 04.08.1777 and Kotor (level 4) on 07.10.1778.
A European view to this war:
eu4_123.png

After two years we got better control, the 73k and 43k additional troops from Spain on site were clearly a help.

In 1779 and 1780 we could gain even more ground. Spain could break into Egypt; on 06.03.1779 occupy Iskenderiye and on 19.05.1780 Kahire.
In Carpathia we were able to siege down Timishvar (level 8) on 18.02.1780 and Giurgiu (level 6) on 21.03.1780.

First visit in Constantinople:
eu4_124.png

It was clear I couldn't maintain this siege (level 7), because Ottomans had too many troops left around. But even with the +33% war score I could demand from Kong all 9 Ottomans' provinces, Austria was willing to take. Abusing the mechanic allowing a weak war leader to decide on the property of a much stronger ally.
So on 12.05.1780 Austria welcomed Pest, Bacs, Szolnok, Bekes, Saboltsch, Bihar, Semlin, Marmarosch and Premissel.
The Spain-Kong war lasted for another 1 1/2 years. Fighting the weakened Ottomans all alone now was the lesser problem, adapting to the fact they had to send some troops for the occupation of Kong, was the bigger. Sigh. On 17.12.1781 Spain got 13 provinces in North Africa (from Kef to Sirt) from Ottomans and all 6 prov from Kong. Unfortunately they demanded the full annexation of Kong, destroying the wonderful construction to attack Ottomans via Kong. Sigh.

Around early 1781 my heir died and it was time for a new No-heir-so-lets-prevent-PU-War:
eu4_125.png

1781/83 Salzburgian Imperialist War on Poland: Salzburg and Austria vs Poland and Ragusa. Austria didn't desire any land, so on 29.11.1781 I seperate peaced out Ragusa. I spent some diplo-points on the demand to release Hungary with the two provinces Fejer and Somogy. I hoped that Austria might show interest in Hungarian lands in the future.
While spending my time on sieging Poland and killing their soldiers, Bohemia used its chance to regain lost territory. The 1782/87 Bohemian Reconquest War on Poland: Bohemia vs Poland and Ragusa. Much later on 10.12.1787 Bohemia succeded and took over 14/20 provinces from Poland. A respectable comeback.
On 31.01.1783 I peaced out against Poland and demanded the province Glogau for myself. On the same day I sold it to Silesia, the original owner. I still had no new heir, but a better follow up war.

Back to Africa again:
eu4_126.png

1783/85 Salzburgian Imperialist War on Songhai: Salzburg and Spain (+10 col) vs Songhai and Tlemcen. One idea was to organize some useful land for Spain. The second to drag Spain into a war, preparing my next expansion for Austria, without them able to defend as DoF for the Catholic faith. On 22.05.1785 I peaced out and Spain got 7 provinces in North Africa from Tlemcen, as well as 10 provinces in Sahel and Guinea from Songhai. This way I was able to connect the different holdings of Spain in North and West Africa. Well, even the world #1 can benefit a lot from some (human) management.

Seven wars and march to Kongo

Key dates:
1785/90 Salzburgian Nationialist War on Cologne: Salzburg and Austria vs Cologne, Liege, Sweden and The Papal State
15.03.1787 New heir Friedrich born
17.11.1789 Duke Leonhard dies, regency of Maria Teresa
1792/97 Salzburgian Imperialist War on Venice: Salzburg, Austria and Spain (+10 col) vs Venice, France and Brandenburg
1797/99 Salzburgian Nationialist War on Verden: Salzburg and Austria vs Verden, Oldenburg and Bohemia
15.08.1797 Oldenburg loses HREmperorship (not official faith), Great Britain is new HRE
1799 Salzburgian Imperialist War on Ragusa: Salzburg and Austria vs Ragusa and Poland
1800 Salzburgian Imperialist War on Karib: Salzburg and Spain (+10 col) vs Karib
1800/04 Salzburgian Imperialist War on The Papal State: Salzburg and Austria vs The Papal State, Sweden and The Knights
15.03.1802 Regency of Maria Teresa ends, Friedrich becomes Duke of Salzburg
1804 Salzburgian Imperialist War on Kanem Bornu: Salzburg and Spain (+10 col) vs Kanem Bornu and Kasanje

Already in the last period GB started another stupid war:
eu4_132.png

The 1784/90 British Reconquest War on France: Great Britain (+6 col) and Verden vs France, Brandenburg, Denmark and Venice. Once more: GB was the attacker, not France (fka Burgundy). In 1785 Verden was peaced out and all 4 continental provinces including the level 8 fort in Finistere got occupied by France. Nothing happened for years until on 16.12.1790 GB handed over all 4 provinces to France.

After my army did their job in Africa, as Songhai plus Tlemcen were utterly defeated (see the 1783/85 war vs Songhai in the last section), I let them come back to Austria to start my next campaign. It was finally time for a confrontation with the true defender of the Catholic Empire: Cologne.

In May 1785 I started the 1785/90 Salzburgian Nationialist War on Cologne: Salzburg and Austria vs Cologne, Liege, Sweden and The Papal State
eu4_133.png

I had to wait for such a long time to start this war, because Spain was DoF and protected Cologne. Other than a defensive alliance, DoF is a on the day decision. Meaning, as I was officially still together in a war with Spain, they couldn't get a CtA from Cologne, the day I declared on them. Peacing out against Songhai a few days later was harmless. In case of an alliance Spain would be able to join for the defense of Cologne at that moment, but not as DoF.

The numbers:
eu4_134.png

268k vs 387k. Looking like a challenge!
Sweden (74/119 regiments at that time) was kind of a wildcard. In one war defending Saxony (1745/47) they didn't show up at all, while in the next (1762/65) they threw everything they had to Northern Germany. Not to forget: Cologne was stinking rich, 11k+ ducats; a lot of mercenaries to expect. All their 7 forts were level 8, respectively 9 for their capital Köln.

Lets start with the occupation of the war goal:
eu4_135.png

Heidelberg

But it did not go as smoothly as I hoped. Berlin (level 4) had been sieged down by Sweden already on 21.11.1795. Just after I liberated it on 12.03.1786:
eu4_136.png

The Swedes showed up in full strength, unfortunately. Also the Pope sent his troops for help. They marched through France and Liege to South Germany.
So the first two years of war were characterized more by battles in the Colognian-Austrian border provinces, than by sieges and major occupations.
Thereupon I changed my strategy. I tried to sneak to Liege. Well, on my way I could help Austria defending Elsass and ...
eu4_137.png

Salzburg got a new heir, named Friedrich.
Shortly after my army reached Liege and the level 5 fort was sieged down on 11.07.1787. Enough to seal a seperate peace deal on 17.07.1787 with the Bishopic. Some 60k soldiers less to fight. Good.

Even after that the war wasn't easy, mainly because Austria spent some of its forces to unsuccessfully siege Papal forts.
Battle in Baden:
eu4_138.png

My space marines, headed by 6/5/4/5 Gregor Waggerl, will soon arrive and win the battle.
More important: This battle triggered Austria to lift the siege of Milan and move these forces to South Germany (113k under my 1k stack on the pic).

More battles:
eu4_139.png

But after around 3 1/2 years we got a superiority and could start sieges on Cologne's forts, to get some real war score. On 23.04.1789 Würzburg fell. At the end of the year, on 17.11.1789, my Duke Leonhard died. Queen-consort Maria Teresa took over the regency for the 2-year-old Friedrich. This event showed again, it wasn't a bad idea to wage wars for 8 years, to prevent falling under a PU.
Sieging down level 8 forts takes time. The next were Braunschweig on 06.01.1790 and Frankfurt on 21.02.1790. The 5-year mark approaching I could just start the siege of the capital Köln.

But the last year of war gave us an appropriate war score and a satisfactionary peace deal on 11.05.1790:
eu4_140.png

eu4_141.png

9 new provinces, including 2 forts. Austria had some nice administrative efficiency and -20% war score cost from Diplo ideas. After that war Austria updated (finally) their forts to level 8. Well, at least in the East and North, like Wien, Berlin, Kärnten, Trencin and Semlin. Unfortunately not in the West, Wallis (lvl 4), Elsass and Freigrafschaft (lvl 6). Sigh.

After two years of rest, the next expansion was in the West: France (former Burgundy).
1792/97 Salzburgian Imperialist War on Venice: Salzburg, Austria and Spain (+10 col) vs Venice, France and Brandenburg
eu4_142.png

The same constellation as in the 1769/73 edition. Just Austria and Spain got bigger, but Brandenburg and Venice got smaller. France lost important provinces in our last war (Elsass and Freigrafschaft with forts), but gained some almost for free from Great Britain.
I declared on Venice again, because France had an additional ally, Denmark, I wanted to avoid.

Same opening as last time - go to Trevisio:
eu4_143.png

On 16.07.1792 I could occupy Trevisio (level 4), but the passage to Venezia was blocked. For the moment. France crossed its border and sieged down Elsass (level 6) on 25.09.1792 and on the other side Narbonne (level 2) on 14.10.1792. But Spain was organized much better than last time and this was all the ground France could get.

Just to show, that these wars were not one easy victory to next easy victory and that playing with/relying on AI-allies is always some kind of torture:
eu4_144.png

Stackwipe 1: -54k soldiers
eu4_145.png

Stackwipe 2: -63k soldiers
Just 12 days after. France was on mil tech 30, Austria on 29, but ... sigh.

Much better when my space marines were involved:
eu4_146.png

My army was already reconquering Elsass, which was done on 26.05.1793. Austria directed some troops to Brandenburg and on 25.08.1793 we could occupy its capital Stettin (level 1). The two level 8 forts in Kolberg and Tuchel kept Austria busy for some time.
I always had an eye on the strait to Venezia and in late 1793 I got my chance. Exactly as in the last war the Venetian fleet unnecessarily left the Gulf of Venice to beat up some ships from Spanish Colonial nations. I seized the opportunity and quickly controlled the war goal Venezia (level 1) on 11.12.1793.

European view:
eu4_147.png

During 1794 France was simply crushed by the sheer number of Spainish troops coming from the South. Narbonne was liberated on 15.07.1794 and just a few days later on 20.07.1794 Salzburg succeeded in the occupation of Dauphiné (level 6).

War score on 1.Nov.1794:
eu4_148.png

Only +19%, because from 50 battles: -21%. The reason is displayed in the lower section. The Colonial nations shipping around individually with weak fleets and falling prey to the French or Venetian fleet. That was helpful to enable me crossing the strait to Venezia, but ... sigh. The gigantic Spanish armada with 250+ heavies preferred to stay simply around Bordeaux. Sigh.

So we had to go for more forts and squeeze France even more for the next 2 1/2 years.
eu4_149.png

Forts conquered: 16.01.1795 Luxemburg (lvl 6), 14.02.1795 Paris (lvl 1), 10.06.1795 Tuchel/Brandenburg (lvl 8), 30.11.1795 Kolberg/Brandenburg (lvl 8) and last 16.09.1796 Anjou (lvl 8). Although I had all the provinces I wanted to grant to Austria or Spain, the war was still cooking for half a year, as I was preparing my next campaign already.

Finally peace on 19.04.1797:
eu4_150.png

eu4_151.png

4 provinces (incl 2 forts) from France and Kolberg on the Baltic Sea from Brandenburg for Austria. I intentionally avoided Austria and Spain bordering. That could have resulted in tension and trouble, between my two "brothers".

A few days before the peace deal I started the next war:
1797/99 Salzburgian Nationialist War on Verden: Salzburg and Austria vs Verden, Oldenburg and Bohemia
eu4_152.png

The idea of this construction was to drag Bohemia in, but to keep Spain out, of course. Spain wasn't just DoF for Catholics but also allied to protestant Bohemia. So I declared on Verden, when I was still together in another war with Spain. Actually it was all about the last Bohemian province in Germany: Uckermark, north of Berlin and already controlled on the pic. The military part of the operation was easy. On 12.06.1797 I occupied Ostfriesland(Verden), the war goal. Soon after on 31.07.1797 I occupied Oldenburg (HREmperor) as well.

Now I decided to repeat what I did with Saxe-Lauenburg and Mecklenburg long before in 1731. In the seperate peace deal with Oldenburg on 15.08.1797, I demanded their force conversion to Protestantism.
So the HRE got a new Emperor:
eu4_153.png

Great Britain took over. Without my religious demand I could have dismantled the HRE later in the game in 1820.
So Oldenburg lost Emperorship and Electorate because of heretic faith.
But see what happened soon after:
eu4_154.png

Cologne declared Deus Vult War on Oldenburg and instead of intergrating the OPM, they forced the conversion back to Catholicism on 03.02.1798. Soon after GB granted the Electorate back to Oldenburg. Lol. So much ado about nothing.

In 1798/99 we could easily occupy Bohemia until on 15.03.1799 Austria could annex Uckermark. The main war against Verden ended on 10.05.1799 for money etc.
Well, again Cologne had the last word, as on 28.06.1800 they took over Ostfriesland. Verden exterminated.

Next easy target was Ragusa:
eu4_155.png

First on 13.02.1798 Ragusa regained Fejer and Somogy/Schomodei. Hungary exterminated.
Then I declared the 1799 Salzburgian Imperialist War on Ragusa: Salzburg and Austria vs Ragusa and Poland. Austria finally showed interest in Ragusian lands. Obviously it was a quick campaign and already on 05.11.1799 Austria got the marked provinces.

As I crushed Ragusa's ally Poland again, Bohemia remembered their earlier success and declared the 1800/01 Bohemian Reconquest War on Poland: Bohemia and Silesia vs Poland and Ragusa. On 09.03.1801 Silesia annexed Poznan and Bohemia regained 5 prov. So Poland survived as OPM (Kalisz).

A look at the ledger page comparing scores of the nations:
eu4_156.png

Oh, the game considers my army #5 of the best armies in the World? Better than Ming, France, Russia, Ottomans or Spain? Well, a little too much of the honor, but just a little. Think, I can record this as a success for OPM Salzburg.

A note on the British-French feud.
They did it again: The 1800/05 British Reconquest War on France: Great Britain (+6 col) and Cologne vs France, Brandenburg and Venice. I have to give some credits to Great Britain this time, as they managed to get some serious armies on the continent. Although they lost all of their continental provinces before. On 01.12.1802 GB could siege down the war goal Caen (level 8), but they were kicked out thereafter. On 18.05.1804 Cologne had to seperate peace out and on 24.01.1805 France could liberate Caen again. So the war fizzled out to nothing for anyone sometime between 1805 and 1807.

Lets see Austria's interests in 1800:
eu4_157.png

Meanwhile Austria had rivaled Papal State, probably because a slot was open, as Cologne got to small and wasn't a valid rival anymore. So some nice provinces lay on the gift table.

First I had to get Spain (Catholic DoF) out of the way once more. I found an OPM in South America, that would do. 1800 Salzburgian Imperialist War on Karib: Salzburg and Spain (+10 col) vs Karib. I just had to declare these wars and call in Spain on the promise of land. The Spanish Colonial nations then did the work. On 08.07.1800 Portuguese Colombia took over Zaraza.
I don't know why neither Spain nor the appropriate colonial nation doesn't declare such simple wars themselves. They desire the land and have total military superiorty.

1800/04 Salzburgian Imperialist War on The Papal State: Salzburg and Austria vs The Papal State, Sweden and The Knights, started on 1.7.1800.
eu4_158.png

I didn't expect too much resistance. Sitting on the six level 8 forts of the wealthy Pope would be the main job of this war.

Battle of Tirol:
eu4_159.png

Austria's troops were a little bit off and also somewhat slow to come to the South, so I had to start the defense of Tirol. But the two Austrian stacks (44,9k and 45k) arrived in time. We won that battle and Papal troops retreated homeward.

After that it was all about occupying the forts: 11.03.1801 Mailand, 23.05.1801 Dalmatien, 28.09.1801 Mantua, 07.10.1802 Firenze, 18.03.1803 Roma and 13.08.1803 Avignon.
During this campaign Friedrich (4/6/6) came of age and took over the rule of Salzburg from his mother Maria Teresa on 15.03.1802.
Greetings from Rome:
eu4_160.png

Peace deal on 02.02.1804:
eu4_161.png

So Austria got 9 provinces from The Papal State. This time I couldn't resist to take Dalmatien (with a level 8 fort), although it bordered Ragusa, in the hands of Spain. The fort could be a valuable help in the next war with Ottomans.

Before the next expansion with Austria I decided to help Spain a bit in Africa. Maybe Spain needed some comfort after their lost war vs Tondo (Philippines) and Ming. The 1804 Salzburgian Imperialist War on Kanem Bornu: Salzburg and Spain (+10 col) vs Kanem Bornu and Kasanje.
Kanem Bornu (reborn in 1794 by rebels from Songhai) in the East Sahel region in dark blue:
eu4_162.png

Kasanje in Kongo in dark yellow:
eu4_163.png

I did the work myself, marching all the way down to Kongo. Just for fun or honor. On 04.10.1804 Spain could start to integrate all 5 provinces from Kanem Bornu and all 4 from Kasanje.

03.01.1821 End of Game

As my troops were already in the Central African region, I started another campaign on behalf of Spain. The 1804/05 Salzburgian Imperialist War on Burundi: Salzburg and Spain (+10 col) vs Burundi and Maravi.
eu4_170.png

The enemy tried to run away, but:
eu4_171.png

Greetings from Uganda:
eu4_172.png

On 03.11.1805 I transferred to Spain all 4 provinces from Maravi and Nkore from Burundi.

Austria's new interests in 1805:
eu4_173.png

Rivals: France, Ottomans and Dehli
The Papal State already dropped out. That is why Austria lost interest in Italy again. Unfortunately.

So another expansion in Germany was next. The 1805/09 Salzburgian Nationialist War on Cologne: Salzburg and Austria vs Cologne, Liege, Sweden and The Papal State.
eu4_174.png

The same constellation as in 1785/90. I am showing a world wide view, because of Liege's holdings in Africa. So I started the war in Nov 1805 by occupying Liege-Kongo, just a bit off from the war goal Paderborn.

Thus Austria had to cope alone in Europe in the beginning.
eu4_175.png

It was much easier than 20 years before, because of the massive territorial gains by Austria at the expense of Cologne and The Papal State in the past years. If you try to fade out the single stacks, you can see Austria's (real) stacks on Hamburg, Bremen, Frankfurt and moving to Avignon, while Papal troops sat on Mantua. This tells the story of the first part of this war already. Chronology of fort occupations (all level 8): 11.08.1806 Frankfurt, 28.09.1806 Hamburg, 21.10.1806 Mantua by the Pope and 19.11.1806 Avignon. The siege of Bremen was given up.

Back from Africa:
eu4_176.png

Learning the lesson from the last edition of this war, I concentrated on the European holdings of Liege after this fight. I could siege down their two forts: On 08.05.1807 Liège (level 5) and on 21.12.1807 Utrecht (level 4). This time there was no need to peace them out seperately.

The Swedes showing up:
eu4_177.png

Stackwipe: -61k soldiers
Why did the Austrian soldiers go way off their borders to Bohemia, when they couldn't survive a single battle against Sweden? Sigh.
Just a minor inconvenience or was it simply my familiarization with such losses by AI-allies? Indeed Austria had 400k+ soldiers at that time, so even that incident didn't slow us down.
On 15.09.1808 Mantua got liberated by Austria and on 23.09.1808 I finished my siege of Köln (lvl 9); its start can be seen on the last pic.

In the North:
eu4_178.png

No resistnace to be found and Austria trying to siege down Lübeck (level 8). +47% Warscore and Cologne on "low" (war enthusiasm), so we were close to demand all the land Austria was willing to take over.

In the South:
eu4_179.png

Aha, some Papal troops.

In Africa:
eu4_180.png

Aha, Colognian and Liegeian armies have resieged all the land of Liege-Kongo. Well done!

On 08.02.1809 Lübeck's fort fell and it was peace one day later:
eu4_181.png

Austria annexed 11 provinces including two new forts.

In 1809 Spain did something on its own. The 1809 Spanish Imperalist War on Tlemcen: Spain (+10 col), The Knights and Sardinia vs Tlemcen and Songhai. And it was a quick campaign, as on 19.11.1809 Spain took over 3 provinces from Tlemcen and 4 from Songhai.

I had one big thing still on my list: Conquer Constantinople.
As both Austria and Spain were willing to join, I could start it:
eu4_182.png

The Great War of this game.

Friends and foes:
eu4_183.png

Sakalava is Madagascar and Malaya the big one in the East Indies. Warsangali (Ethopia) did refuse to join, helpful. The Spanish trade company in Indonesia and Spanish Australia would get a lot of pressure.

Total numbers:
eu4_184.png

2,58M vs 1,44M soldiers. Looking good, but this includes Spain's colonies.

Armies:
eu4_185.png

More realistic without the Spanish Colonial nations. About even. Spain and Austria starting with substantial mercenaries, while Ottomans having by far the most manpover.

Army quality:
eu4_186.png

Ottomans last in morale. That was already a few days into the war. So this is the full morale, not something reduced by lower maintenance. After their debacle in Albania (the tiny victory of 1760) they were extremely passive and thus all their modifiers (army tradition, prestige, etc) were fairly low.

Military leaders:
eu4_187.png

Ottomans are feared for their god-like generals. Nothing of it left.

First action of the war: Conquest of Királyföld (level 8) in the Transylvanian mountains.
eu4_188.png

I saw the fort mothballed for some time. As my army approached the Austrian-Ottoman border, it was activated, before I could declare the war. Thus I couldn't take it the first phase automatically. But the garrison was so small, that I could use artillery barrage followed by infantry assault to succeed so quickly.

Ottomans converted their manpower into new troops. 260k new soldiers in the first months of the war. In the first year, Austria and I had a certain superiority in the Balkans and were able to make progress.
Battle of Vidin:
eu4_189.png

On 05.01.1811 Timishvar (hills - level 8) got occupied and on the day of this battle (28.06.1811) I succeeded in taking down Giurgiu (level 6). But this time Austria could do without me. Soon after the Turkish troops retreated beyond the Bosporus.

So lets go to Kostantiniyye (level 7):
eu4_190.png

On 02.10.1811 the king of Great Britain and HREmperor George V de Valois died, Spain was elected new HRE.

Chagatai tried to defend the war goal:
eu4_191.png

Brave - but in vain. -39k
The 50,2k Ottoman stack turned off for the moment.

Let us continue to besiege:
eu4_192.png

I used artillery barrage, as I expected more defenders to come. 99% or 100%? More Chagatai announced their visit, but would arrive after the completion of the green cake.

eu4_193.png

So here we are. OPM Salzburg conquered the heart of 3000 dev Ottomans. But now a hard contest was to be expected. The 50,2k Ottoman stack changed its mind again, now heading back to its fallen capital.

eu4_194.png

Again Chagatai first - again brave, but in vain. -36k
But it seems Ottomans mobilized some forces now, 266 regiments on the way.

eu4_195.png

Ok, this time we were outnumbered. Our reinforcements, including a 44k from Caraibas (!), on the way, but a bit too far away.

eu4_196.png

So better give up this battle asap and take a controlled retreat to the next province. Look at the losses (41k vs 8k).

One moment of rest and consolidation, while waiting for my friends. And ...
eu4_197.png

come back another day.

That broke the enemy's resistance and Austria/Salzburg got total control in the Balkans, Carpathia and Ruthenia.
eu4_198.png

Austria already sieging Kotor (mountains - level 8) and Corfu (level 2).

Elsewhere - North Africa:
eu4_199.png

Aha, 300+k Spaniards resieging some desert stuff. Hopefully they keep on going east to Alexandria and Cairo.

Sahel and Niger:
eu4_200.png

Aha, Ottomans marking a success. On 07.01.1811 they occupied Bornu, the level 8 fort next to Lake Tchad. Seems they were willing to defend it with some 300k troops.

Central and East Africa:
eu4_201.png

Aha, Sakalava managed a naval invasion and got supported by an Chagatain army.

Indonesia:
eu4_202.png

As expected - Malaya rules. At least it kept their armies busy, so they didn't come up with the idea to walk to Europe, as they did in 1768.

The numbers three years after the start of the war:
eu4_203.png

Manpover low to zero everywhere, except Salzburg of course. Mercs numerous, especially Spain. Meanwhile I geared up from 40k to 48k. Time to spend some of the 5k+ ducats I saved up all the years.
If you look under the ledger page, 450k Ottomans in Cyrenaica, clashing with some Spainish armies.

Balkans and Anatolia:
eu4_204.png

So in early 1813 I decided to set foot on the soil of Anatolia.
Chronology of fort occupations: 18.03.1812 Corfu (level 2), 04.07.1812 Anabolu (level 2), 28.07.1812 Kotor (level 8), 16.10.1812 Kamanice (level 2 - Ruthenia), 16.11.1812 Akkerman (level 6 - Carpathia), 02.03.1813 Sugla (level 2), 08.08.1813 Kirim (level 6 - Pontic Steppe), 12.09.1813 Ankara (level 8) and 05.11.1813 Icel (level 2). No resistance here.
Soon after this pic, on 16.12.1813, I could siege down Sinop (level 2) as well.

But just +12% war score in total. In detail:
eu4_205.png

In such a great war province occupations don't count much. Kostantiniyye in itself counts just +2,5%, ticking war score for 25 months occupation is +10%. The problem was -12% from 59 battles. The same situation as in 1794 in our war with Venice and France. The Spanish colonial nations loosing numerous naval battles against Ottomans, Sakalava or Malaya.

North and Middle Africa:
eu4_206.png

Ottomans got supported by Afghanistan and Chagatai in their efforts for Bornu in Sahel.

Central Africa:
eu4_207.png

The Spanish Colonial troops regained some lost ground and should be able to push back Sakalava and Chagatai even more.

In early 1814 Austria removed more and more troops from Anatolia. Maybe they had some homesickness, as everything in Ruthenia was already controlled. Still not encountering any resistance I continued alone into Mashriq, until taking Haleb (level 2) on 11.04.1814.
Battle of Haleb in the area of Aleppo:
eu4_208.png
Chagatai again. On the first day (!) of the battle my best general (6/5/6/3) died. Unpleasant.

eu4_209.png

I survived and dealt around 4x more casualities. Leaderless. But unsupported by Austria I couldn't do much anymore and on 27.07.1814 Haleb got liberated.
But now Spain proceeded in North Africa. The forts of Iskenderiye (level 2 on 21.05.1814) and Kahire (level 6 on 20.08.1814) got under their control.

One look to the Trade map mode in 1814:
eu4_210.png

Salzburg is the dominant trade power in Constantinople (52%). Just temporary because of all the occupations obviously. But nevertheless.

War Score:
eu4_211.png

+21% in total. Better. -40 war enthusiasm for Ottomans and 11.1 war exhaustion. You can see also two nice revolutionary rebel stacks raging already.

After the fall of Kahire I saw no way to make significant progress anymore, so it was time to "negotiate".
eu4_212.png

8 provinces for Austria, including the forts in Timishvar and Királyföld. 3 provinces in Albania for Spain plus Fezzan in North Africa to connect their holdings. Ok for me.

Peace deal sealed:
eu4_213.png

End of the Great War.

Six years and a bit till the end of the game. Enough time to go for another round with France and eventually Cologne/Liege thereafter. As I wanted to give Austria at least some time to recover, I started with a small war.
The 1814/15 Salzburgian Imperialist War on Ragusa: Salzburg and Austria vs Ragusa and Poland.
eu4_214.png

The two red OPMs (Visocki and Kalisz).
I suspect it was one of those times, where Austria initially was interested in the Ragusian province, but lost its interest during the war. In any case I peaced out for money, transfer trade power, etc. First on 06.03.1815 Poland and then on 04.06.1815 Ragusa.

For the third time:
The 1815/20 British Imperialist War on Denmark: Great Britain (+6 col) and Oldenburg vs Denmark and Austria. Great Britain's interests:
eu4_215.png

Only in the Danish North Sea islands Faeroerne and Shetland (as in 1769/74 and in 1711/14). The major problem of this war for me was the Austrian participation, as they honored the defensive CtA by Denmark. They were unwilling to join any of my potential wars now. Modifier -1000 for "fighting in another war".
From past experience I expected this war to last until 1819, if not till 1821, the end of the game. Killing my plans for last Austrian expansions. Hmpf.
GB declared in Mar 1815. On 06.04.1815 Oldenburg got occupied by Denmark and on 04.05.1815 already peaced out seperately. All I could do was to ask Denmark for military access, go to Sjelland, fight their rebels and resiege their capital (level 9) for them from the rebels. That was done on 06.11.1815. On 01.06.1816 GB occupied Faerorne. Well.

So, what should I do without Austria?
I decided to do some clean up for Spain.
1816/17 Salzburgian Imperialist War on Chinook: Salzburg and Spain (+10 col) vs Chinook
eu4_216.png

The same idea, as in 1800 vs Karib. Just declare the war and let the Spanish colonies do the work. Actually Spain was willing to join, despite their offensive war against Warsangali started in early 1815. On 09.01.1817 Cascadia annexed all 3 provinces from Chinook.

Almost simultaneously I started another one of this kind.
1816/17 Salzburgian Imperialist War on Tarascan: Salzburg and Spain (+10 col) vs Tarascan
eu4_217.png

On 22.01.1817 New Spain annexed all 5 provinces from Tarascan.

Besides some cosmetic corrections on the map, this was a good warm up for my last coup.
1817/20 Salzburgian Imperialist War on British Mexico: Salzburg and Spain (+10 col) vs Great Britain (+6 col), Oldenburg (co-belli), Liege and Cologne.
eu4_218.png

So why British Mexico?
  • I didn't like GB for some decisions taken in the game. The latest their 3rd Imperialist War on Denmark, crossing my plans for Austria.
  • Mexico was isolated (other than Argentine or Alaska), so the Spaniards should easily be able to conquer it.
  • I wanted to use the remote chance to dismantle the HRE. Only 3 electors remained (Cologne, Liege and Oldenburg). As GB was allied to Liege and Oldenburg and Oldenburg was allied to Cologne, declaring Oldenburg as co-belligerent would get all electors in.
  • GB was also allied to Cocomes, Mexico's neighbor to the right. They were holding 41 regiments with a force limit of 65. But Cocomes hated Mexico so much, they were unwilling to join against me. Maybe not so important, but helpful.
From the geographical situation it was clear I had to deal with Northern Germany all by myself.
eu4_219.png

So the task was to deal with the armies of the three nations and to occupy 8 provinces of Liege, 1 of Oldenburg and 11 of Cologne. 6 of these provinces were fortified and 3 with a fortress (=level 8). Thus I had to balance killing armies, occupying forts and dealing with or preventing new armies rising from not yet occupied provinces.

The numbers for the armies:
eu4_220.png

This was already after the first battle with Liege.
For this last war I went massively above force limit with Merc-Infantry for a total of 60 regiments. As always 50% artillery. Cologne 72/108, Liege 36/137 and Oldenburg 13/17. Liege's high FL came from their holdings in Kongo and the East Indies. So I had to try to get their armies seperately, before they could unite their forces.

First battle:
eu4_221.png

Soon after the start of the war, to get them with low morale. Stackwipe 38k, the entire Liegeian-European army.

Next I looked to get the other stacks, especially Cologne's.
eu4_222.png

Found them. As Cologne was only the ally of the co-belligerent Oldenburg, they joined the war with some delay. So I could get them with low morale as well. I could engage one stack (= stackwipe it), the other escaped, as did the Oldenburgian army.

Lets chase armies:
eu4_223.png

Instead of hiding behind a fort, like in Dithmarschen, the other stack preferred to run in the open countries of neutral Austria. Still with low morale. Later I also caught Oldenburg's stack. Free forced march is so helpful, especially as the AI doesn't use it properly.

After that it was the usual sit-on-forts business:
eu4_224.png

Austria guarding Denmark against a possible British naval invasion, I suppose.
The history of fort occupations: 24.07.1818 Hamburg (lvl 8), 25.07.1818 Oldenburg (lvl 1), 14.10.1818 Liège (lvl 5), 08.01.1819 Utrecht (lvl 4), 28.04.1819 Bremen (lvl 8) and last on 28.08.1819 Lübeck (lvl 9). Occasionally I had to deal was some small rebuild stacks of Cologne, but after the first chasing phase, it was quite a relaxing last war for me.

Elsewhere - Central America:
eu4_225.png

New Spain and friends could occupy the war goal Tlapanec (lvl 1 = capital of British Mexico, west of Cocomes) on 26.12.1817 already.

North America:
eu4_226.png

Colonial nations in a fierce fight.

South America:
eu4_227.png

Same here.

Africa:
eu4_228.png

Liege-Kongo occupied and Spain also doing well in their war against Warsangali.

East Indies and Australia:
eu4_229.png

Not so much of action. Liege trying to get some compensation.

What about the HRE?
eu4_230.png

After the fall of Lübeck (Cologne's capital) I controlled all 3 electors. But to dismantle the HRE I needed control over the Emperor's capital. In that moment Madrid. Illusory. The only small chance was the Spanish ruler dying. As you can see Oldenburg would be elected HRE. And I had that capital controlled already. So I just waited 15 months until Dec 1820.
But Tomás survived ...

Time for the last peace has come:
eu4_231.png

Xhosa was GB's last holding in South Africa. 5 provinces in North America for Florida and 4 in Liege-Kongo for Spain. As the war "just" lasted for a bit more than 3 years the British war enthusiasm wasn't that low, so I had to be more modest than usual with my demands.

On 07.12.1820 the British-Danish War ended with a White Peace. Which was easy to predict, even before the start of the war.

So the story / history of Salzburg has been told to the end.
I intend to write one more contribution.
Talking about meta-game topics like idea groups, presenting some statistics and giving a résumé.

Ideas, Statistics and a Résumé

Idea Groups

eu4_236.png

Looking at the universum of ideas, many make no sense for a forever-OPM-campaign. Core creation cost reduction, aggressive expansion reduction, number of states, etc.
National ideas were the generic Divine Ideas, as I started as a Theocracy.

eu4_237.png

So I came quickly to the conclusion only 3 non-military groups could help me. Innovative, Economic and Diplomatic. As Salzburgian people are shy of water, taking the 5 non-naval groups in the military section was also a fast decision.

I love Innovative, but in a normal campaign I "have to" take others from the Adm Group and I "can't" take Innovative. Now I could and it was so good. E.g. the finisher (advisor cost -25%) was more profitable than any of the Economic ideas.
It was my intention to take Economic as 4th group (1570), but at that time I had a unsuitable ruler (1/6/5). So I delayed it until group 5 (1622).
Economic is considered the ideal group for tall play. But for my special campaign it was not that super useful at all. The finisher, -20% dev cost, is only applied to the base cost (=50 points). So the reduction is 10 points, later with 30% development efficency (1745) even just 7 points. But the costs for developing go up quickly to several hundred of points, in the end about 930 points. So 10 points more or less don't have much impact anymore.
Economic was still useful, giving me some extra money and a handy -0.1 yearly inflation. But not that great as in a 10-20 provinces tall campaign, like the Netherlands for example.

And that is the one point I regret in my Salzburg game. I should have delayed Economic even more, up to group 7 (1730). Because in that time frame (~1650) my army lacked quality and I had problems to survive against big stacks, like from the Russians. So I had to be extremly careful with sieges, when my allies run away. After completing Defensive plus Quality and taking nice military policies, I could stand my ground against anyone.
So I should have taken Defensive and Quality one group before I did in my run.

Ages

eu4_238.png

Most depressing was the Age of Absolutism.
As the War of Religios Leagues didn't spawn, I had no chance to fulfill any of the objectives. Thus I had to wait 800 months (66 years, 8 months) to get an Age-bonus, resulting from the 1 monthly base splendor. I choose +1 yearly absolutism, improving the discipline of my army a tiny bit. Well, the boni of that Age were unsuitable for One-city-Salzburg just like that.

eu4_239.png

Much better the Age of Revolutions.
I could easily meet 3 objectives. So I could start my Golden Era and take all the boni over the time. "Improved Force March" (= free of charge) and "Napoleonic Warfare" (= +3 Artillery bonus vs fort) were especially helpful in my personal "Age of Aggression".

Buildings

eu4_240.png

Not much to do. Just build them all.
Early on money was a problem, as in every campaign. So the building of the first level fort was something special.
One point to mention here is the Town Hall. This building gives −50% State maintenance. As the capital state gives −50% State maintenance as well, I had -100% State maintenance. So no State maintenance at all. Exceptionally this modifier is multiplicative. Meaning state edicts (+200% State maintenance) were for free with the Town Hall. Most of the time I had "+25% Local manpower modifier" on, switching to others occasionally.

Wars

eu4_241.png

"Off/Def Ally" means offensive/defensive wars I was called to. In two cases I provoked this, by offering an alliance to a nation being attacked. "Else" consists of "Conquest" and "Rebel support".
So in total I participated in 73 wars, 40 of them I declared myself. Meaning one war every 5 year and 2 months on average. Not a bad stat for an OPM I would say.

Development

eu4_242.png

from 16 in 1444 to 136 in 1821. The graph looks much more linear than I expected.

From the Wiki: "The cost to develop provinces increases by +3% per point above 9 total development. This modifier itself increases by 3 for every 10 total development."
eu4_243.png

So in my case this summed up to +2613% or 929 Monarch points to pay for one click.

Résumé

I like to play normal campaigns, like going for special achievement(s) on VH. But this one was very special.
Quote from post #1:
"Since I was a beginner I have never reached the late mid-game or the late-game, like the age of revolution. Military units, modifiers, wars and battles - how is the look and feel of that stage of the game. Unknown to me."
I got what I have asked for.
The most interesting scenarios came the more the game proceeded, like the five wars with Ottomans. I tried to reflect this in the various sections of this AAR.

Just a short mention: It wasn't all positive in this game. From around 1750 on I encountered more and more bugs. All in the context of military. That is because the number of regiments in the game around the world increases with time. So more wars and battles happen.

Austrian zombies popping up:
eu4_244.png

If this happens, the game performence goes down considerably. Too much graphic data to compute, I suppose. It takes a while until the single stacks are merged into a few armies.

Back to the positive:
Writing this AAR was another special experience. In the beginning I had no idea, it would take 2 months to complete. But now I am gladful, I have done it. If only for a personal documentation of a special game, as other AAR-writers have said before me.

For the future I might well play another OCS. Possibly Frankfurt (with the side goal to conquer Bejing?). At the same time I wrote the AAR, I played some ordinary games. But I have an idea for a next special campaign. It will be something in 1.29 about Mercenaries, as this mechanic will change fundamentally in 1.30.

One last statistical number: This AAR contains 256 pictures.
