I think we all (OK, most of us, can't speak for everyone) want to see more mechs and more variants in the game.

One perhaps unforeseen downside of adding a lot more mechs and variants will be interaction with how the salvage system works.

So, a possible solution, that would also be a QOL improvement right away: make each general chassis generic across all variants, and then let the player choose which variant they wanted to reassemble once they had three parts.

So, instead of salvaging say WVR-6K or -6R parts, you'd just salvage WVR parts, and when you had three to reassemble, it would ask you if you wanted an -6K, -6R, or other future added variant.

As an aside, I might also remove the automatic reassembly of mechs, and add an interface in the mech bay to choose when to reassemble them.

I would vote that we make 3 modular mech parts, that we can mix and match between variants to create our own custom variants, and let us swap those out in the mech bay as we wish to add even more customization to our builds.

Perhaps having a left torso, right torso, and lower body part, instead of 3 indistinguishable parts.

For some mechs like the Hunchback, there will be little difference between the Left torso or lower body parts so they can be just "Hunchback Lower Body" and "Hunchback Left Torso" but the Right Torso would have "Hunchback Right Torso 4G" and "Hunchback Right Torso 4P." In this case, being able to switch between the HBK-4G and HBK-4P would only require one extra part, and there won't be much customization.

For other mechs like the Catapult or Black Knight, there would be more different style parts, so you can have more customization over them.

That's another good possibility.

I'd have ZERO objection to being able to tweak the hardpoints by putting the arm of one variant with the torso of another variant.
