How long dead were these guys before they were first beatified or was there a fast track that led straight to sainthood?

"So how do you become a saint

* before you died what do you need to have done?

* after you died, what sort of lobbying was required?"

You would presumably need a convincing argument that there was a miracle.

What qualified for sainthood? Obviously, spreading the gospel, so you might even become a saint after ravaging the heathen countryside, converting by the sword.

Piousness and building ecclestical buildings would most probably qualify as well.

One of the best methods seems to be to have died a martyr, that one always makes them sit up and notice. ;)

I think you have greater chances by ravaging heathens than building churches, but that is probably because it is greater PR for the religion to ravage some heathens.

Still, going down to game mechanics about 'How to become a saint' shows the tricky part of this IMHO.

It is easy to figure that benefits would be piety and prestige, but how to get there? If all ways there also gain great amounts of piety and prestige, you are basically being rewarded twice for playing well once.

Or maybe it can be used as a converter - get lots of piety and you become a saint, earning prestige.

Gain lots of prestige and you get to rule an order or boss a crusade, earning piety.

Hmm?

I think a conversion of piety like Nikolai II suggests could work well, provided that there are a number of other things piety can be used for and the benefits of each don't overlap. So if sainthood is attained through the accumulation of a huge amount of piety by a single monarch, then the benefits that brings to a royal house should be unique.

As for dying as a martyr...could help I guess, but a lot of nobles died during the Crusades but most of them were not canonized :) So there must be other factors at play here as well...

Many crusader nobles weren't overly pious.:D

You probably had to be an anointed king to become a saint if you were not part of the clergy. How many non-king/non-clergy were made saints?:)

Good point :) I recall reading about this man (saint) who levitated everytime his heart was full of love for God...or something like that...hrm now that I think about it, he might have been a priest afterall. But your point stands, most medieval saints were either clergy or "great" kings...

So if you go out there and force-convert a few thousand pagans, that could amass some piety for your royal house.

I suppose sainthood would also very much be influenced by the relations you have with the Pope. Or where the Pope and the majority of his curia is hailing from.

I'm really intrigued by the idea of having relatives canonized, but I still can't think of a realistic way for it to be done. The problem is that we still don't know how different dynasties will "control" the papacy - once we know that we can make more educated suggestions for the in-game inclusion of Sainthood.
