I am attempting to get the Three Mountains achievement involving Ryukyu. Some strategies bank on Ming protecting us as a its tributary. Problem is, somehow, whenever I start a game I don't start as a Ming tributary despite the game pretending it's the caseon the selection screen.

I tried multiple times, and it never works. I do manage to end up capturing some Yamana or Hosokawa land by myself. But with Ashikaga angry with me my only option is to sell provinces and weep back my way back to Okinawa.

I don't have any DLC btw. Yeah yeah I know.

Anybody has the same issue? Anybody has an alternative?

Help.

Should I go for a Rennaissance Rush despite Satsuma getting benefits out of it?

Best way I can think of to get off Ryuku without being a Ming Tributary is to ignore Japan and go for Indonesia instead.
Should I go for a Rennaissance Rush and expand and explore my way East and South despite Satsuma getting benefits out of it?

I dont know if you are very good at the game to try 3 mountains right off the bat, but not having any DLC really makes it hard especially Art of War with all the vassal interactions (reconquest CB) and stuff.

Okay, no DLC Three Mountains is insanely hard. Your best bet is no CB your way into Indonesia or Phillipines. I recommend starting with the Animists, then the Hindus, then move to India to finish the rest of the Hindus off. Stay away from the Buddhists and the Sunni early on if you know what's best for you. You have to work very quickly, and you can't really afford to have vassals or allies because occupation mechanics suck so hard it's incredible without DLC. Theoretically, if you play your cards right, it shouldn't be an issue, but you will find yourself run endingly giga-trolled by your "allies" at some point if you have them around. You have no ability to acquire maps, so Exploration ideas are mandatory; get it early, but don't explore anything unless you plan to conquer land in that region within the next 10 years. While you can't disinherit your heirs or abdicate, you can "disinherit" heirs by assigning them as a general, placing them on a single cog leading 1k troops, then sending the cog into open seas to sink.

I got lucky and got some cores in via my new vassal being attacked by 1460 as well as renaissance and a 5 5 6 strong heir.
Hopefuly the start of good things.
If you arn't using DLCs then roling back to an old version (don't know which one) where the map is smaller might make it easier.
Not on steam so no can do.
