Chapter One - The Scramble
header.jpg
Sesanti opened his eyes. About him was white. White above, white below, white off into the distance. There was no recognisable point. His eyes struggled with it. Then behind him he heard a gasp. He spun around. There scattered over a small area were more than ten other people, all dressed regally like himself.

No one spoke. The silence was deafening. Then it was shattered. The voice spoke loudly after the quiet and Sesanti winced a little.

'Welcome lords', the voice called out in a deep tone, coming from everywhere and nowhere.
'Tembo Kiride of Bunyoro, Ademola of Wanga, Mpho of Nkore, Dingiswayo of Ankole, Odayon of Chokwe, Nyatsimha of Momomotapa, Kwame of Malawi, Edegbe of Ndongo, Thabo of Lunda, Nkuwo of Kongo and Sesanti of Rwanda. The ten of you are kings of your realms. All powerful there but still nothing more than mere mortals. It is our will to change that. As the god you so faithfully worship I will grant you two great gifts. Intelligence far exceeding what you currently posess and a life many times the length of an ordinary man.'

Sesanti was dumbfounded. Still nobody spoke.

The voice continued,
'Of course such gifts are not given without reason. For years beyond number we have watched over this great land of Africa. It is a wide and beautiful land. Truly the richest in the world. But as we have watched it the people have stagnated. Progress is slow in all but turmoil. The people are divided into many nations and states. Invaders come from the north bringing a false religion and further north others plot ways to take this land. This land that must be united under one great ruler. The gift you will receive are so that you may return to your nations. Once there lead it well. Make it the greatest nation in Africa and united you may hold back the forces that would destroy you. Go now.'

Sesanti felt a mild sensation like being pulled apart. Then he was back in his palace in Rwanda. He had no doubt that what had just occured was real and no figment of his imagination. He could feel it. His servants showed no alarm. Indeed they looked to be exactly where they had been before. Apparently his visit to god had been timeless.

There was no time to contemplate the events though. He told no one of the goings on but called for a map of his region and the small world known by him and his people.

The small neighbourhood of Rwanda

He dispatched spies to Bunyoro, Nkore, Ankole and Wanga. No doubt their kings were doing the same as the race began to fulfil the gods wishes.

The spies confirmed Sesanti's fears. His neighbours were worried of attack and had begun fortifying their lands. With no time to lose Sesanti ordered the recruitment of two small armies. Rwanda would take a different path than her neighbours, offense.

Sesanti chose Nkore as the target. He declared war upon them and his armies marched fast. Perhaps Tembo Kiride of Bunyoro and Dingiswayo of Ankole underestimated Rwanda or maybe it was just a wish to go to war but whatever the reason they alligned themselves with Nkore against Rwanda. It was a foolish move.

Nkore's lands were unguarded and captured swiftly by Sesanti's men. With the whole nation subdued his armies split. One moved south the occupy Ankole and the other north to take Bunyoro.

Once again the lands fell without resistance. Now all of Rwanda's known neighbours except Wanga were under Rwandan control. Wanga had seen the coming threat and had nearly completed fortresses to keep out Rwanda. Sesanti had to move fast. He declared war upon Wanga and his men once more marched victoriously through the entire nation in only a few months.

Sesanti summoned all four of the beaten kings before him in Rwanda. Together the five of them signed a peace deal. Under it Ankole, Nkore and Bunyoro would all turnover half of their lands to Rwanda. And all four would submit diplomatically to Rwandan overlordship and agree to help Rwanda militarily in becoming the strongest nation in Africa.

The results of the early scramble for power

Sesanti was pleased with himself. Never before had he realised the power he commanded and what he could achieve with it. He was just about to return to his bedchamber and rest when he once again the gentle tugging sensation swept over him and he was surrounded by white.

Well Duke, I think it's safe to say you do not enjoy playing easy powers. And I must admit, I am unfamiliar with the style of map. Which mod is that (and how does it differ from MyMap or whatever)?

The Danish King - I like that idea :D

Jacko the Panda - I truly hope so.

Nobegow - Thanks, somewhat odd nation but interesting.

coz1 - Its always a bit more fun to take the challenging nations. The mod is MyMap with AGCEEP, the latest version. Theres been significant changes in Africa from earlier versions which is what prompted me to try the region first.

Halogen - Welcome to the forums. I'm playing MyMap-AGCEEP mod which you can download here .

Kelvin - Glad to have you along, hope you enjoy it.

Fiftypence - Thats the plan. I had to change it to that colour from the mud brown they were. I hope you aren't too bothered by the storyline. I wrote it then when I read it I thought it looked rather similar to your Dreams of the Devas. I never intended that since it grew out of a way to explain why all the African nations have very good monachs that never die. I hope you don't mind.

Grundius - Thanks. Plans are generally to take Sub-Saharan Africa which should be quite hard, then from there just see what happens. Expansion into West Africa and holding off the Europeans probably.

The Suebian - Glad to have you along.

anonymous4401 - Quite,this is going to be a strange game I feel.

Snake IV - Too easy . Getting Burgundy would be nice but I think thats ws2_32 territory :(

stnylan - It had to be. I racked up a lot of BB unfortunately but leaving the neighbours any longer to build up forts would have been a very bad move since the supply limits are so low that even a 5K army takes attrition and i can barely afford to build more new troops.

Chapter Two - Orisha
header.jpg
'Welcome back Sesanti.'
Once again the voice spoke from all around him once again. It was loud but did not hurt his ears. There was no echo. The all encompassing whiteness swallowed up everything.
'As you already know I am your god, the one you know as Orisha. I did not introduce myself upon our first meeting for all of you who were gathered before me know me by different names.
I am surprised and pleased at your progress. I am all powerful in many regards but the future always remains cloudy to me. I did not expect it to be Rwanda that should succeed in gaining so much. It was Momomotapa I believed would make the first advances, fuelled by it's great gold mines.'

'Thank you Orisha, I am amazed and proud to have succeeded your expectations'

'Remember you still have many more expectations to meet and plenty of obstacles to face on the way. You may have succeeded now but your power will cause jealousy and loathing amongst your neighbours. They too seek to fulfil my goal. Nobody can be trusted, you will have no friends only diplomats who smile whilst concealing their teeth lest you see their hungry fangs. You may have pleased me but expect no special treatment from me, you will not receive it. This is a test to find the strongest and fittest nation to lead Africa. Once you prove that I will be truly grateful.

The next thing it was over. As suddenly as he had left Sesanti was seated again in his palace.

He plotted his next move. All his neighbours were subdued. But what of the other five kings who had been called before Orisha that day. Where were their kingdoms? He couldn't afford to let them grow either. He dispatched several parties to explore west, an area that the Rwandans had curiously avoided for most of their existence.

The parties returned a matter of months later with intriguing news. To the west was one large kingdom, Luba ruled by Thabo. To the south and west was another large kingdom, Malawi ruled by Kwame.

Sesanti took his time deciding upon the next target. Years passed and the entire region remained quiet. Rwanda's vassals despite their forced submission remained loyal, at least on the outside, but Sesanti had not forgotten Orisha's warning. He knew the time would come when they would have to be incorporated into Rwanda, by force if necessary.

The year known as 1424 by some was to be the time for Rwanda to continue her quest. Sesanti ordered war upon Luba and invited his vassals to join too (a handy strategy that would prevent them strengthening themselves too much while Rwanda was weakened by war).

The war was a hard one. For over two years it dragged on. Rwanda's armies were in poor fighting shape and suffered many humiliating defeats to the defenders. Fortunately Nkore contributed a good amount to the war effort and captured the capital of Lunda whilst Rwanda took Maniema and Kivu.

Sesanti then gladly made peace whereby Rwanda received the provinces she controlled and Luba's treasure while Nkore took the remnants. Luba were no more.
5-1428.jpg

Rwanda's gains and the surrounding lands

Sesanti visited his treasury. It had been depleted severely during the war but the peace settlement had made it a much better sight to behold. Pretty as it looked though Sesanti thought it little use lying around. He invested it in a new method of tax collection throughout the land. Previously Sesanti had taxed the people litle preferring to let them live well. Now though times were changing. He regretted having to take more from the already poor population but justified it by calling it all for the great cause of uniting Africa.

So as not to place more pressure on the population Sesanti vowed to keep the nation at peace for some time. It was a popular tactic and several of the cities within the land collected together a gift for the state of 10 ingots of gold* as a thanks for the peaceful times. Sesanti was overwhelmed to receive such a gift, it may have been for peace but no doubt it would go towards war.
