Russian Provinces

Congrats, Paradox, the map of Russia is basically alright.

Few things:

1. Kexholm most definatly should be named Korela
2. 'Karelia' shouldn't be named that when it's in posession of Russian principalities. This area was never referred to as such by Russians. Make it Kem instead.
3. 'Ingermanland' shouldn't be named that while it is in posession of Russians. It should be renamed Ivangorod. Or Izhora.
4. 'Udskoye' in Siberia doesn't make sense at all. There was never anything named like that there. There was an ostrog of Udsk at some time. However, just name it Uda, and it'll be ok.
5. The province of Kholm south of Novgorod doesn't make sense either. There was never anything important about this little village. Rename it to Toropets or Velikiye Luki.
6. And please fix Beloozero to Belo Ozero, just like you quite awesomely did in CK2.

Look, when it comes right down to it, there's no point in slinging out nationalistic insults. Eastern Europe gets a bad rep for being stupidly nationalistic, you're not helping matters with posts like this.


You can complain about problems with Poland, like you do in your Government Type complaint thread, so let the Russians complain about problems with Russia, the Hungarians complain about problems with Hungary, etc.

Ingermanland is Swedish for the land of the Ingrians. Looking up Ingria on wikipedia gives these names:

(Finnish: Inkeri or Inkerinmaa; Russian: Ингрия, Ingriya, Ижорская земля, Izhorskaya zemlya, or Ингерманландия, Ingermanlandiya; Swedish: Ingermanland; Estonian: Ingeri or Ingerimaa)

Sweden and Novgorod had fought back and forth over the area well into the CK 2 time frame. Same goes for Kexholm as well. Seems province names only change by events, and Paradox didn't feel that it was important enough for these provinces, and they went for the Swedish names.. And they are allowed a little nationalism as the developers, right?

Why not import CK2 cultural naming?

First I should say that I'm basing this on Peter Ebssens Byzantine Empire AAR, where on of the decisions for when you have mostly restored the empire renames all the former Ottoman former Byzantine now Byzantine again provinces. I'm not 100% sure and have not played around with the demo enough for that.

As to your actual question, well, to many provinces and to many cultures I would guess. In CK 2 the devs would at least have had some exposure to most of the languages involved with translated works and what not somewhat easily available.

To be fair to the poster of the quote above, sea access is a very important thing for Russia even today, one of the reason's why there wars over Ingria and Baltic Coast, renaming it is a sign of control by both the Swedes and Russians, so it could be nice little touch on a historical feud. But then again Paradox might be mad since Russia won...

In Swedish possession it's called Kexholm (Kexholms län) same goes for Ingermanland. As solution is that Sweden and Moscovy/Novgorod/Russia has events that change name after they conquer it.

Oh, and Komi doesn't suite well for descripting that area. Back then the Komi people were called Zyrians and Samoyeds, not Komi.

The area is better called Petchora.

The problem is that, the instant I go to rename a province something more appropriate, I end up writing something dick related. So it would be better if it was automatic and I go nowhere near that little text box.
