There is a big problem that I can see. When I have 0 of something, the game does convert another resource for me - but only enough to keep 1/6 of my IC running. This is ridiculous. I am sitting on 7,000 oil and I get only 10 rubber converted daily? So if the World Market is dead, my production can be frozen as well - for years!

HOI: First impressions

http://www.snowball.ru/forums/?board=hoi&action=view&id=42620

The introduction was not that pleasing.

Oh man... it turns out that democratic people require a lot of consumer stuff! Dang.

Ok so the triangle is my alliance indicator, and the color of the circle within that triangle is my readiness for war. Interesting.

Click the state flag to see the ministers.

I love the world map - I can see how the day/night regions change... I know where is it dark and where is it light right now.

Hey, where's the population count for each province?

Ohh so infrastructure affects the speed of unit movement. Interesting. And the numbers seem to be off somewhat.

Diplomacy: Only the major, well-known countries can really enjoy this aspect of the game. There are many options - but they require a lot of diplomats! That and democracies can't just declare a war without parliament's approval.

The alliances invariably seem to be ideology-based

I like that I can choose the outcome of any election. Oh... so with each electrion many ministers disappear? At least I can change them with replacement ones - but I don't know what's the allegiance of those.

(Translator's note - huh? The FAQs clearly state that the allegiance is shown - or at least only the eligible-by-ideology ministers show up as potential replacements)

Oh jeez. There is no war mobilization? This is such a downside!

The battles don't impress much either - think Panzer General I. The unit description is detailed - but I have no idea what weapons are they using, I had to check the research screen constantly to find that out.

The trade sucks too... no money? At all?

It is possible to play this... actually I say do go play it. This ain't a masterpiece, but 4 out of 5 stars for sure. It's not as global/big as EU2 though... and all to schematic and not detailed enough (once again, what's the population of each province?)

Germany easily takes on France. Italy regularly wins over UK in East Africa.

Some random leader names are inappropriate. Example: A Russian general named Anhalt-Tserbsky

(translator's note: not again... EU2 had that, now HOI?)

Anhalt-Tserbsky = Anhalt-Zerbst i pressume?

The father of Katarina II of Russia was duke of Anhalt-Zerbst, so there's a connection, but not strong enough to name random russian leaders though :)

Anhalt-Tserbsky = Anhalt-Zerbst i pressume

And the fact that the country has changed drastically in the 180 years after her... *smiles silently*

No officer with a noble-sounding last name could have reached a high rank in RKKA without having to pass through extensive loyalty checks... many nobles who joined RKKA in Civil War have been purged.

And PUH-lease? A general with a German last name on the eve of war with Germany? Ohhh fat chance of that :)

There is no such thing as reserve in this game!

(translator's note: and force pool?)

So the game fails to reflect the whole army structure. Also, what's missing is the war capability of each country (translator's note: and stockpiles?) - when it's war, we can stop making consumer goods altogether (translator's note: this would be an adequate reflection of war economy - like the way Germany converted its priorities in '42, etc)

Finally, it sucks that the game's economy is handicapped. Where are the aircraft industries? The steel mills? What's up with having no aluminun? No nickel? No wood?

And the trade just sucks.

(translator's note: the posts are starting to repeat in content; do realize that Snowball's forums only have <10 active posters)

Noo! Not that! Don't utter the name of that awful waste of hard drive space. I heavily anticipated that game and then it arrived, too buggy to even play. Even after they managed to put out enough patches to fix the main problems, it is a dry, empty simulation. The only enjoyment comes from playing a world power for 5 minutes to throw the world into a nuclear holocaust.

wimpy AI?

(cold chill runs down my spine )

....this is very scary...

Thanks, Yozhik, for all your work! Three cheers!

yet I can't help but fear the worst... the AI won't use the airforce, and yet the airforce is very effective in battles against the AI? The airforces of WWII are a BIG deal, very influential on many scales, in virtually every theatre, every terrain, (etc.)

DISCLAIMER: no manual yet? I still refer to my EU2 manual (I've only been playing it for a few months). I understand it is very important to understand the game mechanics.

But that AI weakness... BRRR! scary, scary, scary! Snal, your comments are worse! Please elaborate! Other HoI betazoids, care to comment?

pleasepleaseplease - just spell it out for us, don't pull your punchs!

Italy conquers ALL of British Africa by 1941

1. Don't tell me you actually care about 0IC deserts.

2. Don't tell me you haven't played Axis and Allies where one stray armor will and does take all of Africa.

Czechoslovakia annexes the Soviet Union?!

Average game settings. The player went right after starred provinces. Soviet forces were mis-allocated - too many in the northwest - ENOUGH TO COMPLETELY STOP GERMANS IN THEIR TRACKS - but misallocated; they needed just a few more divisions in the south. Also, Russian airforce was missing from the battlefields.

Germany doesn't use their airforce?!

Doesn't use it effectively. The player did mention three bombings in the early game, but he said that his own airforce pretty much negated them (your planes kill my troops, my planes kills yours, our soldiers don't get to meet... hehe).

What we're seeing is a typical human "I know this trick and I will use it. And who cares that using 400 bombers in a single attack is ahistorical." Ouchy but impossible to counter. We're humans dammit. Unless AI generals do act on their own and sometimes disrupt your attacks. Mhm. As if you wouldn't replace those generals on sight next load of the game.
