I'm seriously considering doing exactly this, but as time goes on, they become more and more difficult to conquer (higher land tech than me, good fortresses, invincible morale, and still that terrible climate  ). And I don't want to fight too much in the west, even if events keep attract me there.

Oh well, I'll see!

1671 - 1684 : Readying for the conquest of the East

This period was the most peaceful of all russian history, with 3 successive Tzars building their strength and readying for invading their eastern neighbours.

The now old Alexei declared a restrictive commercial policy against all other nations in 1673, and this policy ended only with his death in february 1676. His son and successor, Fedor III Romanov, concentrated his efforts in building an empire strong enough to conquer the East. In 1679, he paid an old 1000 gold loan contracted by his predecessor to finance the polish wars, but he put the crafters to contribution, and this angered them enough to provoke a loss in investments the following year. Anyway, Fedor's reign would last for only 6 years, as in june 1682 his sister, Sofia Romanova, climbed to the throne. She was not the brightest ruler that Russia had ever known, but she was wise enough to follow the policy of the past decades, and immediately ordered the measures necessary to restore the confidence of the people.

These three rulers spent a lot of efforts and money in improving the administration of the empire, in order to make it a rich and stable country, powerful enough to succeed in invading the East.

Bailiffs were appointed in several provinces (Belarus and Mozyr in 1671, Pripet, Podolia and Bessarabia in 1673, Krementjug in 1675 and Kerch the following year) and courthouses were built (Belarus and Mozyr again in 1672, Bessarabia and Crimea in 1674, then Pripet and Podolia in 1675).

Finally, an important event happened in january 1677, with the discovery of the infrastructural tech level 5, wich allowed the Tzars to promote governors in order to improve their income and reduce the 50% inflation plaguing the russian finances. 7 governors were promoted in 1677, 4 more in 1680, 6 in 1681, 8 in 1682 and 10 in 1683 and 1684, lowering the inflation to only 13%.

All these improvements pacified the empire, with only minor and unsuccessful rebellions throughout this period (Pripet in 1671, 1673, 1676 and 1683, Bessarabia in 1672, 1679 and 1680, Kaffa in 1672, Podolia in 1673, Crimea in 1676 and Azerbaïdjan in 1677).

This also allowed a boost in scientific research, especially military research ( :D ), with the discovery of cartography (naval tech 7) in 1673, and land tech 16 to 21 (including light and mobile artillery, and mortars) from 1676 to 1684.

The second great goal of the Tzars was to strenghten our eastern colonies, to use them in our future invasion of China. Numerous outposts were strengthened, Amour became a city in april 1683, and fortifications were immediately raised to defend against the chinese and to raise the troops allowance of the province. Fortifications were also strenghtened in Pripet, to allow a more important garrison, both against the rebels and against Poland.

This forceful colonization angered some of the natives, who burned our outposts in Ekimcan, Sofiisk and Chernigov, but each time we rebuild our outposts, until the natives finally gave up.

This period was also rather peaceful on the diplomatic side, but important events happened nonetheless. Fedor strenghtened our bonds with Moldavia, and renewed our wedding and alliance with their dinasty in 1680.

Several nations vassalized their minor allies, especially Turkey and China.
Ethiopia vassalized Georgia in 1671, while Turkey vassalized Nubia, and annexed it in 1681. China vassalized Korea in 1672 (then annexed it ten years after) and Ayutthaya in 1679.

The only other events of note were England giving Hessen and 250 gold to the Netherlands in 1675, and the Valachian government being overthrown by rebels in 1679.

But the most important diplomatic event for Russia was the persian embargo against us in november 1675. This gave us a CB against them, and conforted the Tzar in his idea of invading this nation.
Thus troops were stationned all along the border, in Armenia, Azerbaïdjan and along the east bank of the Caspian, ready to attack those foolish infidels. And this time, the Tzar had a plan wich would (if it works, of course ;) ) sign the doom of Persia and the start of our great rush towards the East!

1685 - 1701: The invasion of Persia (part1)

At last, we were ready to start our awaited conquest of the East, starting with the invasion of Persia. We had a problem with Persia, because it controlled the island of Bahrein, and as we had no fleet or harbor close enough to make a landing there, it would be impossible to annex all of Persia.

So we formed a brilliant plan: we would declare war on Persia, taking advantage of their embargo against us, with the only objective of annexing the coastal province of Hormouz and its harbor, thus allowing us to build a fleet and land in Bahrein in our next move against Persia.

Following the advice of her counsellors, our Tzaress Sofia declared war on Persia in february 1685. Our armies immediately crossed the border, invading the southern provinces of Persia, while our armies in Armenia and Azerbaïdjan were ordered to keep their positions, to avoid a surprise attack by the traitorous Turkey.

A month later, a persian embassy reclaimed 250 gold, but we merely ignore this claim, as Hormouz fell within a few days. In april it was Balucht turn to fall, and Persia proposed to give it to us, but we refused, as our main objective was Hormouz.

Sweden choosed to DOW us in april, but this time we were ready to fight back and make them pay for their arrogance and the past humiliations they inflicted to Russia. Their first attack in Ingermaland was repelled in may, and even when Poland, France, Switzerland, scotland, Venice and Naples declared against us, we were confident in our victory, having spent a lot of time and money to strengthen our armies.

Our plans in Persia were completely successfull, and when Isfahan surrendered in june, Persia offered us Hormouz and Balucht, an offer we deemed acceptable.
This annexion angried Turkey, however, as they and their dane ally DOW us and Moldavia in august.

Meanwhile, Sherementev was wreaking havoc in Poland, seizing Kurland in december, and Lithuania in march 1686. A month later, our siege of Karelia was successfull, and when our army marched on another province, Sweden had no choice but to offer us Karelia, lacking enough troops to oppose us.

In july, we invaded and stormed the turkish province of Trabzonde. Sherementev was still rampaging through Poland, capturing Mazovia in january 1687. The initial polish offer of Lithuania was rebuked, but then they offered us Kurland and 250 gold, and we gladly agreed.
We were still at war with Turkey, however, and invaded Galicia the same month.

A revolt in Bessarabia was crushed in april. In may, Thuringe became vassal to Bohemia, and in july we seized the turkish province of Dobrujda. This encouraged Persia to DOW against Turkey, Denmark and Algeria, as it was an opportunity for Persia to take advantage of the critical weakness of Turkey.

Another revolt was defeated in Kaffa in october, and we refused the turkish offer of Galicia in november.

A new COT appeared in Whangarai in january 1688, and we immediately sent merchants there to improve our economy.

A 53K turkish army attacked us in Trabzonde in april , but was repelled. Denmark asked for 250 gold, and Turkey offered us Galicia and Dobrujda, but both were disappointed by our answer.

In may, a second revolt in Kaffa was beaten, and a turkish army was defeated in Sivas. Turkey offered Galicia and Dobrujda for the second time, and as we realized our war against it was only weakening us, we accepted their offer.

Being at peace with everyone except Denmark, we appointed a bailiff in Amour, Dobrujda and Galicia, and built a courthouse in Nagorje.

The rest of 1688 was calm, with the exception of some rebellions in Azow in september, Kurland in november and Pripet in december.

In the rest of the world, Persia had to pay 112 gold to Algeria in june. Modena, Toscane, Genoa and the Papal states declared war against England and Netherlands in august. In september, France, Poland, Switzerland, Scotland, Venice and Naples DOW Spain, Austria, Portugal and New Spain.

In november, while Genes paid 244 gold to savoy, Denmark asked for 18 gold, and we agreed, being tired of incessant warfare. Alas we couldn't have peace for a long time. In september 1688, an embassy from Cleves arrived in Moscow, with words of peace and frienship, raising our relations by +25. But this was only a despisable ruse, as in december, Prussia and its allies, Sweden, Pommerania, Hanover and Cleves, declared war against us.

In fact it was only a semi-surprise for us, as we knew that Prussia was massing troops (more than 120K) along the border with Kurland. But they had superior technology and morale, and it seemed like we had nothing strong enough to prevent them from marching all the way to Moscow.

1685 - 1701: The invasion of Persia (part2)

The prussian army crossed the border in january 1689, immediately beating the rebels in Kurland and besieging the city. Our troops had virtually no chance against them, be it because of their numbers or their weapons, so we carefully choosed to wait for an opportunity to attack them once they were weakened by attrition.

China annexed Ayutthaya in april, Savoy did the same with Modena in june, and in july, while Gordon invaded and seized Tavastland to Sweden, Spain had to give Franche-comté and 250 gold to France.

Things became very good in september, when the Tzarina abdicated in favor of Peter I Romanov, who was to become our new monarch. Peter was a brilliant strategist and a fine statesman, and as such would be perfectly fit to defeat our enemies and invade Persia.

His brilliant politics allowed us a bonus in investments, but in october the war was still uncertain. A 2K swedish landing in Dobrujda was easily repelled, but Sherementev was severely beaten by the prussians when he tried to lift their siege in Kurland. The city fell in november, and the prussians immediately marched to the north, hoping to catch Sherementev and crush him once and for all. He was defeated in Livonia in january 1690, and in estonia in february, and had to flee for his life and those of his men. Meanwhile, another swedish landing was crushed in Dobrujda.

Galicia rebelled in april, but the rebels were quickly destroyed, and Prussia asked for Kurland and 104 gold. Peter hesitated, but even if our situation was difficult, he knew that giving Kurland to Prussia was the best way to have it attack again in the future, so he choosed to try and resist. He was encouraged in his decision by the fact that prussian troops were quickly diminishing, and seemingly had no reinforcements available, whereas our army in Sweden was victorious. Gordon captured Nyland in july, and as Sweden refused our offer to annex only this province, he invaded Finland.

In july, Sherementev, having received fresh troops, made a flanking move to avoid their army in estonia, and reconquer Kurland by surprise in a sudden and victorious assault. The next month, we discovered a new land tech (22), and Sherementev defeated a small prussian army in Mozyr before storming eastern Prussia. Then he marched to the north, against the last prussian troops in russian soil, defeating them in Estonia in october.
When Gordon captured Finland in november, Prussia asked for a truce, but we clearly had the upper hand on them, and Peter refused their offer with disdain.

Realizing that its prussian ally was no more, Sweden offered us Finland and Nyland, and those provinces became part of the russian empire in december. Peter used a few gold to build a courthouse in Amour, just before Persia and Mughal declared war on Russia, allowing us to invade Persia once and for all without loosing stability for breaking a peace treaty. :D

But Moldavia refused to answer our call against Persia, and as we realized that it had become a new threat, Peter DOW Moldavia, hoping to annex it entirely, wich would allow us to gain new orthodox provinces, and attach Dobrujda to our main empire instead of being separated from it by Moldavia. Our former ally asked for 250 gold in compensation of our declaration of war, but they had nothing serious to oppose our armies, and thus Peter refused to give them what they asked.

A revolt in Kalmuk was crushed in february 1691, and Peter ordered a military reform, giving us important investments in land technology.

Prussia ceased to exist as such in march, when Lefort captured Memel after a long siege; its former ally, Hannover, asked for 250 gold, but we just laughed at them.

Rebellions were defeated in Kurland in may and Galicia in june, just days before we seized Moldavia and invaded Bujak. In august we captured the persian province of Kars, and refused the moldavian offer of a truce.

A month later, Hanover asked for 60 gold, and we agreed, having no more reason to fight them, and an unexpected gift of 400 gold allowed us to pay this debt and raise new troops.

Rebellions were crushed in Dobrujda and Krementjug in october, then again Dobrujda and Eastern Prussia in november.
The defenseless persian provinces were falling one by one, and we captured Kirkuk and Bahrein (were we landed a small force of cavalry) in october. Persia offered Bahrein, but this time we were aiming at total annexion, and would satisfy with nothing else than the complete and definitive defeat of Persia.

Finally, Bujak fell in november, and the former Moldavia became the latest part of Russia.

1685 - 1701: The invasion of Persia (part 3)

In january 1692, governors were appointed in Nagorje and Khretset. Our victories over Persia continued with the fall of Isfahan in january and Persis in march. Persia offered Kars and Bahrein, then these two and Persis, but again we rejected their offer. Morroco (who? :D ) declared war on us in march, saying that they couldn't let their muslim brothers succumb to infidels (and did absolutely nothing else than protest).

The Papal states paid 250 gold to England in april, and within 24 hours were annexed by Savoy. Then in may, Poland, France, Switzerland, Scotland, Naples and Venice made their usual DOW against us  . When will those fools learn that it's suicidal to attack someone who as repeatedly defeated you in the past and is even stronger than before?

In june we discovered a new land tech (23), and captured Tabriz over Persia. The same month, Sweden vassalized Hanover.

In july a revolt in Pripet was crushed, a persian landing in Bahrein was repelled, and scottish troops burnt our outpost in Tassaret, on the western coast of Africa (this was a former prussian province, and we didn't even knew it was russian! :p ).

In august, Lefort captured Mazovia, and another russian army seized Iraq. The next month Lefort took Lithuania, and Poland agreed to give us this province and 250 gold.

Another rebellion was beaten in Galicia in november, and Hamad fell the same month. But Bahrein was the target of two consecutive persian landing, and the second one annihilated our few troops left there, thus taking this island back.

1693 started with two rebellions in Bujak and Dobrujda, and two easy victories against the rebels. Fortifications were built in Amour in january, and bailiffs were appointed in Memel and Lithuania, while we captured the persian province of Awhaz.

Then in february Georgia, Serbia and Ethiopia, angered by what we did to their orthodox moldavian brothers, declared war against us (these idiots couldn't realize we were only willing to unify all orthodox lands under the enlightened rule of our tzar).
Omsk became a city the next month, and in april, while we seized the georgian province of Koulan, we rejected the Morrocan claim for 57 gold.

The rebellion in Nyland was defeated in may, and we also took Basrah. We refused the Mughal offer of a truce (we would do the same several times in the next months, and had better continue this wise behavior..........).

Damman fell in june, and the same month Novossibirsk became a city. In september, a navigation factory was build (freely) in Lugansk, and in october, while we were destroying a rebel army in Kerch, Peter granted 7 gold to Morroco in exchange for a peace (bah, 7 gold is not a harsh price for peace, even if the enemy had no way to harm us).

We also captured Mekran in november, and Persia offered it, Damman and Kars, but again we refused their offer.

Denmark, Turkey, Wurtemberg, Algeria and the Hafsid DOW us in january 1694, and Turkey immediately began raising a huge number of troops to send against us. New rebels in Kerch were destroyed as their predecessors, and we refused to pay 250 gold to Denmark and 130 gold to Mughals.

Because of the turkish agression, we had to stop our invasion of Georgia, our troops there being needed to defend our homeland, and thus Georgia agreed to our truce offer in may.

We discovered land tech 24 in august, landed new troops in Bahrein and stormed the province in september, defeating a persian fleet in the process and gaining persian maps showing unknown territories.

A turkish army seized Alga in october, while we were busy fighting rebels in Memel. But we reclaimed this province in november, and also captured Balouchistan over Persia.

Another revolt in Memel was beaten in january 1695, and Peter ordered a general embargo against all over nations (we only had enemies anyway, so why let them stole some of our precious business income?) Another revolt in Pripet was crushed in february, and the Persian province of Kalat fell the same month. March was busy figthing rebels in Finland and Krementjug, while England and Netherlands agreed to a white peace with Toscane.

Three other provinces (Memel, Elbruz and Kerman) rebelled in may, and Turkey finally agreed to our offer of a truce (its danish ally rejected the same offer). Karakum rebelled in september, and Khorasan in december, just days before Hungary DOW us.

We promoted a governor in Amour in january 1696, and the next month we seized the persian province of Indus and rejected the hungarian claim for 195 gold. Then in march it was Bujak's turn to rebel, and Sweden, Hanover and Pommerania declared war against us. This didn't slowed our invasion in Persia, and Thar was captured in april.

Pripet rebelled again in may, and Kalmuk in june. Mughals kept sending troops in our back while we were busy besieging Kutch. They would invade Thar and force us to lift our siege in Kutch several times in the following months, being a real thorn in our shoe (and this would lead us to commit a terrible mistake....... ).

In august, Spain, New Spain, Portugal and Austria declared war against France, Poland, Switzerland, Naples and Venice. The next month, the rebels in Crimea and Eastern Prussia were destroyed, and the efficient politics of Peter improved our investments and raised our stability. A revolt in Kurland was also defeated in october, and in november we discovered the carbines (land tech 25). The same month, both Denmark and Hungary asked for 16 gold, and we choosed to agree to the danish proposition. This let us free to attack sweden, and Gordon captured Tavastland in december.

January 1697 was marked by revolts in Azow, Elbruz, Lithuania and Kurland, and each time we were victorious, even if Lefort died during an assault in Kurland. Meanwhile Gordon seized Osterboten and Savolaks to Sweden, who had no other choice than to offer Tavastland and Savolaks in exchange for peace.

Saxony became vassal of Bohemia (Bohemia would be annexed by Thuringe in june) in february, and the next month we had to fight rebels in Kerch, Finland and Kazan. New rebellions were defeated in Pripet in april, Poltava and Khorasan in june, Azow in july and Memel, Livonia and Eastern Prussia in august.

Still in august, we captured Ruthenia from Hungary, but the hungarians refused to give it (we only had two stars, but asked anyway, just in case). So we immediately invaded and besieged Magyar, and then Hungary spontaneously offered Ruthenia in exchange for peace. We appointed a bailiff in that province one month later.

The year 1697 ended with two rebellions in Memel and Nyland, and then Mughals asked for a truce. Tired of fighting their guerilla tactics in Thar, and believing that Persia would soon be conquered entirely, we commited a terrible mistake when we agreed to their offer.
A few days later, we realized that Persia had not two as we thought, but three provinces left, including Agra, right in the middle of Mughal territory, with absolutely no other wayfor us to invade it than to declare war on Mughal without a CB.......looks like our stability would soon be collapsing!

Did you get any former Prussian armies when you annexed them? Even though the 120,000 men would have been torn apart by attrition, a goodly portion would have remained which you could have used to attack Persia. Speaking of attacking, to teach Poland and co. a lesson, why not annex some of them? Poland/Venice spring to mind, if you can gain access to Venice. With Moldovia under Russian rule, you have to be close.

The last prussian troops were destroyed when I invaded Memel, and they lost their very last soldier there! :D

As for Poland and Venice, I'm considering annexing the whole Poland next time they attack me, I've let them a chance to survive but they don't understand how lucky they are. As for Venice, even if I've been at war with them many times, I've never actualy fought any venician soldier, so I'll let them live their own life (anyway, they may be useful in case Turkey wants to re-establish its hold over the Balkans).

1685 - 1701: The invasion of Persia (part 4)

Peter was a brilliant and renowned monarch, but the people disliked him anyway, thinking he was only concerned with his own power and glory, instead of taking care of his people. For this reason (and a long and endless period of war), Russia was plagued by rebellion.

1698 was almost exclusively spent fighting rebel armies, in Kalmuk, Savolaks, Crimea, Elbruz, Krementjug, Moldavia, Eastern Prussia, Lithuania, Pripet, Finland, Tavastland, Kaffa and Galicia. The only other important events this year were a new land tech discovery (26) in march and Austria giving Lorraine and 250 gold to France in september. Birobidjan also became a city in november, and a bailiff was appointed there.

Our sieges of the last persian provinces where going on anyway, and now that Mughal was out, no one could prevent us from conquering them (at least there's an interest in our truce with Mughals.... ). We conquered Jaipur in january 1699, and Kutch in july.

In february we discovered the hand grenades (land tech 27), and after the fall of Kutch, we had no other choice but to DOW Mughals to reach Agra, loosing 5 points of stability in the process

This provoked a new DOW against us in august, this time from Georgia, Serbia and Ethiopia. But we invaded Koulan a month later, and Georgia agreed for a truce. This also provoked plenty of rebellions in our provinces (Hormouz, Kerman, Memel, Karakum, Crimea, Krementjug, Kalmuk, Kurgan, Azow, Eastern Prussia, Moldavia, Emba, Pripet, Lithuania, Selenga, Nagorje, Poltava, Amou Daria, Elbruz, Kerch, Khorasan and Savolaks) throughout the year, especially in november and december.

Peter ignored Mughal's claim for 169 gold in september, and was angered when Poland, France, Switzerland, Naples and Venice declared war against us in october, mainly because we didn't had time to rebuild our forces on the western frontier, due to our war with Prussia and the numerous rebellions there.

1700 was also plagued by revolts in Crimea, Finland, Amou Daria, Pripet, Eastern Prussia, Kurland, Kalmuk, Kerch, Memel, Bessarabia, Okhotsk, Amour, Bujak, Galicia, Kaffa, and Turkmenistan, from january to july.

Poland asked for 229 gold in february and Mughals for 169 gold in march, but both claims were ignored. In april we discovered land tech 28, and Poland refused our offer of a truce. Then in may it asked for 142 gold, and as we had no real army to oppose them, and didn't want to fight against them for years, we agreed to give them what they asked (but next time I don't think we will be as gentle with them  ).

Finally Agra, the last persian province, fell in july, and we annexed the entire country. Turkey, Denmark, Wurtemberg, Wallachia, Algeria and the Hafsid immediately declared war against us, seeing our presence in middle-east as a threat to their empires.

Mughals rejected our truce ofer in august, and we agreed to give them 28 gold in september. Meanwhile, we invaded and annexed Wallachia, and England, Netherlands, Savoy and Scotland declared war against us. England finally asked for 32 gold in december, and we gladly agreed, being tired of war and wishing to live in peace, now that Persia was in our hands.

The seconde half of the year was also plagued with revolts, in Savolaks, Balucht, Damman, Baluchistan, Kaffa, Memel, Galicia, Kerch and Kazan. So was 1701, with new rebellions in Finland, Indus, Kerch and Galicia.

Spain paid 189 gold to Switzerland in january, and gave Hainaut to France in april. Finally, Turkey agreed for a truce in february, thus allowing us to have a well-needed peace, after 15 years of non-stop warfare.

We were now masters of Persia, and our next objective would be China and the far east.

Too bad about having to chose between breaking a truce or letting the war drag on for a few more years.:( You didn't have any way of walking around the Mughals to Agra, even though it would have left your army out of supply? I think I've been spoiled by the West European lack of interest in mainland Asia in my own GC:cool: .

I had no way to attack Agra without a DOW to Mughals, so I choosed to break the truce , as this neverending war was lowering my stability anyway (but -5 in stability hurts! ). Bah, this was my fault anyway, it'll teach me to think seriously before making an important decision.

For China, indeed I'll need luck, and they own nearly all the east except India (they annexed Ayutthaya and Korea, remember?). That's why I'm planning to spend a couple decades preparing my invasion, without attacking anyone. I especially want to build recruitment centers in Asia, as I'll need vast numbers of troops available there when the time comes. But I have already strenghtened my colonies there, and built a force with enough artillery to storm the Great Wall :D .
