Had the JIT error, got it fixed. Now I have -

"Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

Runtime Error!

Program:C:\Program Files...

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information."

popping up EVERY time the game is starting up, specifically when it gets to 'Generating the map'. So, here I am, contacting the support team to try and fix the problem. I've already tried every solution listed on the 'Any crash, read this first!' sticky, reinstalled repeatedly, updated, defragged, etc., ad naseum. Haven't included dxdiag.txt, don't know how to find/run/make it on Vista.

Please HELP!?!

Please run DXDIAG, Save All Info, and post dxdiag.txt here (first delete everything after the Sound Devices section so it will fit). Also post your Rome/settings.txt and Rome/logs/system.log files. Note that if you use Vista and have installed the game in the suggested folder c:\Program Files\Paradox Interactive\Rome\, the active versions of these last two files will have been redirected by Vista to a non-system directory, like c:\users\[name]\appdata\local\virtualstore\Program Files\Paradox Interactive\Rome\. You may have to search your C: drive for them.

That's all I can find; if you need more information from me, I will probably need more specific instructions on how to find/access it. As I am certain you have figured by now, I'm "functionally illiterate" with regards to computers.
Thanks in advance.

Your video driver is 3 years old. Please visit the Compaq/HP website and get the latest version they have.

You only have 446mb of memory in this machine, which is not really enough to run Vista by itself let alone this game! If you can manage to upgrade it to, say, 1.5 or 2gb that would be good.

Did that settings.txt file come from c:\Program Files\Paradox Interactive\Rome\ ? If so, that's not the right one. You need to go to c:\users\[name]\appdata\local\virtualstore\Program Files\Paradox Interactive\Rome\ , where [name] is your Vista user name (eg BookWyrm or whatever you told Vista). The proper system.log file is in the same place, but one further directory down under c:\users\[name]\appdata\local\virtualstore\Program Files\Paradox Interactive\Rome\logs\ .

Video driver working on as this is written.

Regarding RAM, when I pull up the Control Panel and select System, it says I have 512 Mb RAM. Would the difference be due to the fact that when I ran dxdiag, three windows, including IE with several tabs open? I think it may, but as I said, "functionally illiterate".

c:\users\[name]\appdata\local\virtualstore\Program Files\Paradox Interactive\Europa Universalis - Rome\
shows 3 folders: gfx, logs & map, no files
gfx - flags folder, no files
flags - flagfiles.txt & flagfiles.dds

map - cache folder, no files
cache - border.bin & map.bin

logs - shows 11 .txt files:ai, EMFXLog, error, game, memory, message, random, setup, system, text & time

following that path I can't seem to find a settings.txt anywhere from Paradox Interactive on; however here is the proper system.log (I hope)

When installing the first time, I had IE with tabs opened. other installs, do not 'think' had anything else running. Make a difference? Didn't with any other games when installing.

Well this is not good, you may be getting the same problemn with Rome:Gold some others have reported. Is yours a boxed or downloaded version, and if downloaded from where?

If it's from Gamers Gate, uninstall the game, download a fresh copy from them and install it into a new directory, like c:\games\rome.

512mb is still inadequate to run Vista alone. But I'm not saying this is causing your problem, it just means your machine and the game may be very slow. Do make sure you have no other programs running when you try to run the game. But having IE running while installing the game is not a problem.

Gought boxed version retail. Tried running again after downloading Radeon Legacy pack for graphics, got same error message at same point of loading. I'm looking into adding RAM to system, but with current financials may not be possible.
Worst part about buying electronics is that within two years it stuggles with current programs and within five you have a really expensive paperweight.

As I say, I don't think your lack of system memory is causing your crash, it's just something that caught my eye. However I have just noticed this
Kernel Release[graphicssettings.cpp:294]: Video memory amount: 66MB
The game requires 128mb of video memory. Is there another more capable machine you have access to that you can install the game onto, to confirm it's fundamentally OK?

Also, can we see the error log from your Rome/log directory please?

That's quite common and not related to your earlier problem, same with those error log entries. So aside from that it all ran OK? If so I guess your original problem was your machine. Probably if you can get a better video card for it you'd be OK.
