I have a 64-bit Vista machine, with CK2 on version 2.0.4. I installed EK 0.1.4b through the zip archive - but when I load EK, the game crashes because of a runtime error.
I'm using all content DLCs excluding RoI and SI. Can anyone help?
When I installed 0.1.3, I had a 64-bit system. Since then, I have had to install a new motherboard. Now, although I have everything else the same, this is apparently a 32-bit system. It's the same OS, for Christ's sake. Performance level is still the same.
Then again, I got the same runtime error when I tried playing 0.1.3 on my other, XP-32bit machine.
In that case, there's one word to describe this situation. FUBAR.
Make sure you've got Legacy of Rome running; you could also try deleting your main settings file if you've run CK2 2.1 already, it changes something in there that causes a CTD if you then revert to 2.0.4 or at least it did for me (I had to delete that file last night to play an MP game of EK014b, it wouldn't let me load CK2 otherwise).
You could also try this, copied from the LI mainthread.
Vista/7/8
> Run command prompt as administrator
> Type: bcdedit /set increaseuserva 3072*
> Verify by typing bcdedit, and find the entry above.
> Reboot
XP
> Find boot.ini (usually on C:, might be hidden), mark it not read-only, and open
> Under the section called [operating systems] find the line that says "multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Wind ows XP Professional...". Duplicate that entire line below.
> Add a space at the end and /3GB /USERVA=3072*
> Rename the OS name of that entry to identify it at startup
> Save boot.ini, then r-click and make it read only.
> Reboot
*any value above 2048 really (at least 2560), but restrict it to 3072 if you only have 4GB in your system.

If it doesn't work yet, disable all non-essential DLCs* and close any other background programs so you basically only have CK2 running.
* Non-Essential DLC
- All Flag packs.
- Music Packs.
- Unit Packs.
- Sunset Invasion.
If after all that it still doesn't work, disable the Portrait DLCs one by one, checking each time to see if it runs. Start with disabling the Mongols, then the Russians, then the Medis, then the Celts, then the Africans, then the Nords.
Finally, if again it doesn't work there's not a whole lot more you can do, and EK will simply not run on your system.
I uninstalled then reinstalled CK2 directly to 2.0.4, deleted the settings file, installed EK 0.1.4b from zip without Large Resolution, and ran it with the following DLC:
- Legacy of Rome
- Sons of Abraham
- The Old Gods
- Sword of Islam
- Ruler Designer
- Customization Pack
- The Republic
