Behind the lines in Nancy
France will be lost by a woman and saved by a virgin from the oak forests of Lorraine
-Beada, circum 731
The fields of Lorraine we not as busy as usual. Of course, this was the middle of summer, and the crops were not all due yet. But, you would have expected to see
at least some peasants in the fields, if not working, at least sleeping. But the truth was that there weren't many strong men left in the fields nowadays. The armies of Lorraine, in Nancy, were being replenished by new conscripts, as the small battles going on between them and the rebellious armie of Maximillien of Artois were still raging in different part of the province.
The results of the battle of Sournay had marked a pause in the uprising. The Count of Artois had now full control of the Lower Counties, as well as Alsace, Champagne and parts of Lorraine, Bern and Franche Comté. In theory, only Nancy was left to conquer for the Count of Artois to consider claiming the titles of Lotharingia... he had a recognised heir, he had almost all of the lands...
But, Nancy was still controled by Myriam de Montaiblanc, duchesse of Lorraine. And she had always been true to the House of Berry. Since her diplomatic debut as an ambassador in the court of King John of England, representing the House of Berry as Auvergne. She was awarded the title Countess of Montainblanc, only to be promoted to Duchesse of Lorraine after the House of Berry had acquired the titles of Burgundy and Lotharingia. She was a good friend of Marie de Berry, she had also fallen in love with King John back then, but that was another story.
The Countess turned and looked behind her. The carriage that was transporting her had been attacked by scouts, and the men defending her had fought valiantly. The raiding party was far now, but she didn't feel safe.
In the city of Nancy, nothing had really changed. You wouldn't guess that there was a war going on, except for the poor variety of food available in the shops. Lots of bread all around.. pretty much just that... bread.
As she stepped out of the carriage, the baron of Lecry approched her and bowed.
"Your grace, you are finally here. The situation is desperate. The troops of Artois are on the move again, and we're stuck battling the rebels of Holland."
The Countess looked at the man. "Walk with me" she said.
For an hour, the Duchesse was briefed on the situation of the troops of Lorraine, the different smaller battles in the last few months, and the problems in Dijon.
"The Counts and Dukes of Burgundy are thinking of allying themselves with Artois? This is madness!" she said sharply.
"Oh, but my Lady, they don't have any leader! Alexandre de Beaufort, our Prince Regent, is dead. Our troops are ill-funded, and Maximillien promises titles after titles to his allies, a luxury that we don't have..."
She closed her eyes. The whole situation reminded her of the war against England, more than a decade ago.
"My Lady, there are talks, however. The army of Lorraine are strong... and they are more than willing to follow you to battle, should you wish to lead them..."
"Oh, Baron, I am not a soldier..."
"My lady, your grace... there is talk also... the Venerable Beada..."
"What does this English Scholar have to do. He's been dead for... many, many years now."
"But his prophecies... France will be saved by a virgin from Lorraine... We know that your husband has died before you could bear child. And we know that the French lost the war against the English, so Joan of Arc WAS NOT THE MAID OF LORRAINE!"
"What are babbling about? You are making less and less sense, Baron."
"My Lady, I am simply saying that the House of Berry is now the main force of the House of Valois, ruler of the French people. And you are here, with us, to save the House of Berry.
My lady, YOU ARE THE MAID OF LORRAINE! MYRIAM DE MONTAINBLANC IS THE MAID OF LORRAINE, OUR SAVIOR!"
He took out his sword, and put it in her hand.
"My lady, take my sword, and lead us to victory." He bowed completely in front of her, and she looked at him with amazement.
