Leofræd looked on as the king entertained his vassals' petitions. The gathering had gone on for some time, and despite the earl's best efforts he feared that the king's naivety had already revealed itself several times already. Leofræd made a mental note of the nobles that seemed observant enough to notice these slip-ups, but feared he wouldn't have the time to meet with them before their own plots had been set in motion.

Worse, though, was how quickly the king trusted others. A miscalculation — he needed the king-to-be to be trusting early on, but he waited too long before teaching that friendliness could be the least trustworthy trait of all. This may be difficult to recover from; even after I speak with the king, I'll need to keep an eye on those that befriended him.

The king seemed to be handling the western earls' pleas to fight with the Welsh well enough when the messenger from the north finally arrived. Leofræd quickly intercepted the young man, who eagerly handed the message to him. Æthelheard's servants had been accepting the earl's orders for several years now, and thankfully there was no expectation that something as petty as a crown would change that.

He read the message as he walked toward the gathering around the king, and while his face didn't show it, the news was far worse than expected. Combined with the message that had been received earlier in the day, this was a dreadful situation indeed — far more than Æthelheard was prepared to deal with.

Unfortunately, Leofræd's ambitions were currently tied to the king, and threats to his kingdom had to be dealt with accordingly. If the king himself wasn't ready to do so, then his most loyal servant must do so in his stead.
