OK, two more things have come up in my English GC that don't seem right. First, I vassalized Hannover in Sept 1612 and it's now Jan 1623 and I can't annex them. Not they won't accept; I can't even offer it to them. The relationship is at +191, so that's not the problem.

Second, I DoW'ed Mysore (saved game first, just in case:rolleyes: ) and Hannover refused to join in. According to the rule book that came with the game, vassals "will be on your side if wars break out."

Of course, even so the rules here are better than what comes with the board game; there the Rules contradict the Annexes which contradict the Senarios which contradict the examples:( .

I have a similar-ish problem in latest Denmark IGC (IGC 2.3, patch 1.10). I cannot vassalise Hannover. When I send a diplomat the "offer vassalization" option is greyed out. We
1. have a RM
2. are in same alliance
3. have relations +200
4. same Protestant religion

We also have a common border (couldn't resist taking Mecklenberg).

Is there a trick to vassalization?

Maybe Hannover is already fighting a war, and you don't have noticed yet (unlikely if you're in the same alliance ;)) . Other than that, I really don't know.

Might be. After my Russ + Den alliance lapsed I joined a Neth + Hann + others alliance, I think they were already at war with Spain. I'll check.

No, we didn't (it doesn't exist any more; Hesse and Palitinate split the country between them in a recent war. My army in Oldenburg withstood wave after wave of attack before finally breaking, and once again the Dutch just sat there watching. They got their one-upance though - Flanders and Holland are now Hessen provinces:p ). But neither the rules booklet nor the dialog box make any mention of needing a common border.

So how am I supposed to plan my actions if I can't know what the rules are?

Your allies doesnt join your wars unless they have maps over your enemies territory. In other words they have to know that and where your enemy exist in order to join you... that is if this was what you meant, as for "vassals" they dont join you unless your allied... :)

Long way back I read something about having massive amounts of troops in the border area would make the nation more willing to be a vassal. Another rumor says that if you share maps with it, so it could see how powerfull you are increases the chanse to... I dont know if this things are true but I kind of believe it anyway so I always move some armies to the border before annexing... :)

Chicken bones and so on... :D

Hehehehe yeha thats another plus with having large troops in the border area... :D ;) Same result anyway, but a slight different way of persuading...

Edit: The sword can be just as mighty as the penn :)

In this situation, the option will still be available, but with a less important success rate. In his case, he can't even try to vassalize them (option greyed). So it can't be this. ;)

It sounds like some pretty boring and iritating problem, and I think that the guys have comed up with the most of the solutions possible.
At least I can't think of any other:D ;)

And the thing about putting troops that sound like a smart way to do it.

Then you get them one way or the other, or what Yoghurt?;) :D

Good old Yoggie always thursting for the blood of his troops:D ;) :p :D
