Okay, I'm confused...what the bloody heck is difrules? As long as I have been playing I don't remember hearing this term. I presume it is a cheat of some sort, but what is it supposed to do?

Yes, it is one of the cheats. You pess F12, then type difrules, then press Enter.

With this cheat you are supposed not to lose a single battle, but in my experience this isn't always true.

Interesting update.

I am filling in on ideas for my own very first Portuguese game which I plan to play some time... after I finish all 5 or 6 I am doing now :D

I also like the small screenies with specific pieces of action... make the reading more dynamic.

Sasha, what I do? Just a few games at a time! :D In fact, the only EU2 games that I'm playing now are this and the dutch one, for my other AAR. No, no other ongoing game at EU2! And perhaps you could transform your planned portuguese game into another superb AAR by yours...

:D

About the screenies, yes I also have this feeling. Small screenies of action really help the reading. So, why not take and post them? ;)

Thanks for reading!

Update on the weekend.

Friends, I need to apologise for the lack of updates lately. I promised an update on the weekend, but it wasn't possible due to this:
http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=112527

I hope you understand me.

Until next weekend there won't be a possibility of update too, since it's the last week before vacations and I have some projects to finish and review, and it is not easy work...

Next week, on Monday or Tuesday, I'm going back to my mother's house to summer vacations, and the cabinet of my PC goes with me. Then I'll only update it next week.

Sorry for this... however I'm open if you want to contact me.

:D

Ok Anibal, I happen to know a bunch of Hells Angels members who are very upset that you don’t update your AARs regularly. I will drop them your address then…:)

Chapter VIII, part VII

Chapter VIII, part VII

Emperor Sebastião I (June/1557 - August/1578)

* * *

Lisboa, 20th July, 1571 A.D.. The Imperial Palace "D. João III de Avis".

Velasco runs after Araujo.

- Regent! Regent! Breaking news you'd like to know! Bad news! - he is worried.

- Tell me now! - Araujo ordered.

- Well... I have news that our garrison in Cartagena has been attacked by an army consisting of irregulars!

- Irregulars? What do you mean by "irregulars"?

- Well... let me find a way to explain... oh yes! Imagine soldiers without a banner, a flag on their uniforms.

- Ah, OK.

- And imagine that they don't claim to attack, on an example, "for the glory of the Ottoman Empire" or any other kingdom/sultanate/etc.

- So... those are irregulars?

- Yes.

- And, what succeeded then?

- The reports I have is that they were around 2600 men whilst our forces had around 10 thousand men. And the irregulars were driven away
- Velasco explains.

- Suspects of who has sent those irregulars?

- An european, maybe. They were using arquebuses, which means gunpowder. And the only people outside Europe that we know they use gunpowder are the chinese, correct? And they are our allies... and they are our friends.

- Well, all I can do now is to order the recruitment of more troops in Cartagena, to expell any more intruders. Of course you are to investigate this event, Velasco!
- Araujo orders.

- I shall do so. For the Portuguese Empire!

Lisboa, 18th February, 1572 A.D.. The Imperial Palace "D. João III de Avis".

At lunch, Velasco comes with news about the irregulars.

- So, my Lord, seems our garrison suffered two more waves of attacks from irregular troops. Now I have a clear suspect.

- And what is your suspect?
- Araujo takes wine from the Cape of Good Hope.

- Look at this picture. A soldier sent me a letter and drawed spanish-like uniforms trying to describe the irregular soldiers.

088.jpg

- Oh-oh... So, does it mean that D. Felipe II is backing and paying irregular troops to attack our colony?

- It may seem so. Remember, he has rightful claims in Cartagena because of the Treaty of Tordesillas
- Velasco explains. - So he doesn't have to actually declare war on us to do so.

- No, I won't warn D. Felipe II about this until we have a clear confirmation that the irregulars are spanish troops. Those are only suspects, not a confirmation, right? Then... let's change the subject.

- As you wish, Lord.

- My current policy is to save money in order to send a big group of missionaries to Zacatecas, the capital of Mexico. It would cost us nearly 1000 ducats, so saving is needed.

- I agree with you. They can provide us with a nice tax and also a nice recruiting base near the spanish colonies!
- Velasco agrees and takes more wine.

- It is still going to take some years, though. But anyway, I have another polocy to follow. Recruit more traders and send them to build trading posts on the various still empty lands in Australia and Brazil. Let's claim more land to the Empire and also trade stuff with the natives, so we can be less dependent from gold!

- Won't it hurt our budget, since we need to save money?

- It would hurt more if we sent colonists in stead of traders...

April 8th: Araujo received news that Alvise Mocenigo I, the venetian doge, has embargoed the portuguese traders in Venice. Araujo considered making no retaliation, since an embargo against Venice is already in place, for the venetians, old friends, have already chosen the wrong path of mistrusting Portugal a long time ago.

Porto, 22nd July, 1572 A.D.. The governor's palace.

- Good to see you arrived in time, Lord - the local governor talks to Araujo.

- So, what are the problems here?

- Corruption. Much corruption. Some publical employes were caught with imperial money on their pockets. Documents were burned as well.

- This is grave... this is really grave!

- They were caught but my militiamen were bribed by them with this money, so you see the problem.

- Well, something we ought to do now!
- Araujo stated.

- The militia is corrupted. The publical empolyes are corrupted. I feel you think I'm also a corrupt...

- No. You were nominated personaly by myself, remember? I trust you!

- Yes... good to hear this from you also. But I need funds to combat the corruption! This is spreading! And also there are rumors that those corruptors are being supported by D. Felipe II!

- Of course he has enough reasons to support this. Instability on the Portuguese Empire is a must for him and his plans of uniting Iberia under his crown. Take 150 ducats to help creating a new militia, hiring new employes and combating the corruption! Is that enough?
- Araujo asks.

089.jpg

- Yes it is.

More conversations followed. After the meeting, Velasco and Araujo were talking on a private room.

- Araujo, I have the confirmation. Those irregulars are spanish. There were three more attacks and some of them were captured and confirmed: D. Felipe II is paying them - Velasco states.

- No. I won't plan for revenge. He is wasting much more money sending the troops than we are investing reinforcing the garrison.

- Indeed. The waves are always consisting on around two thousand soldiers, and we have more than ten thousand there, and better trained than the spanish ones!

- So, he is already having the revenge. We must concentrate on acquiring money to send missionaries to Zacatecas.

Lisboa, 7th September, 1572 A.D.. The Imperial Palace "D. João III de Avis".

- Araujo! A visit for you! - one of the guards shouts.

- Let him in! - Araujo responds.

Then a man enters. Wears an armour of high quality, has a very long sword, silvered sword, and also carries an arquebus on his back.

- Araujo, I am Camões. I'm back from Mexico and I'm announcing my retirement of military service.

- Camões! Nice to see you here! Oh yes... I think you deserve the retirement. You conquered Mexico and discovered lands north of Mexico, showing a great service for the Portuguese Empire. I am happy to concede you the retirement, if you wish.

- And so I wish. I am thinking of starting to write... I already have a big idea.

- To write? - Araujo is surprised.

- Yes! A book! A story!

- You have my support, you do have my support! Perhaps... may I know what is the planned story about?

- No. When I finish writing it, you'll see it
- Camões states.

May 25th, 1573: Desperately needing more goods because of his internal wars, the french king Charles IX cancels the embargo against portuguese traders. Imediately more traders were sent to Lyon and Flanders, to trade more goods for Portugal with french merchants. And on the same day, news from Cartagena. Another attack, but this time the soldiers weren't irregulars: were soldiers bringing spanish banners and flags, this time with more cavalry and also some artillery pieces. They were driven away, but with heavy casualties for the Holy Imperial Portuguese Armed Forces.

Chapter VIII, part VIII

Emperor Sebastião I (June/1557 - August/1578)

* * *

Lisboa, 26th June, 1573 A.D.. The Imperial Palace "D. João III de Avis".

News arrived on the palace telling that a council has happened in the italian city of Trent. A council with the highest members of the church, the achbishops, the cardinals, and also Pope Gregorious XIII. The subject?

- They were discussing the protestant movements, the reformation and all those heresy, Araujo - Velasco says.

- Do you know about a conclusion? What do they want to do about it, by the way?

- They have stated the official policy of the Church about this. A new movement was created and is being supported by the Pope and the high clerigy: the counter-reformation.

- Can you give me more details?

- Basically, it means a renewed enforcement of the Holy Inquisition on the catholic lands against the heresy.

- But not in Portugal! Never! Portugal is for the portuguese! Portugal is not to be ruled by the Pope, who is more infidel than those heretics!
- Araujo shouts. - You know what I'm talking about! The popes have... they have children! Always had!

- Okay, okay, I won't discuss it with you, sire. Stay calm... drink more wine!

- No alcohol today... I won't.

- Well, among the new policies, the Pope officialy allowed that countries that officialy adopt the counter-reformist movement among the government could convert the heretic governments back to catholicism, through war
- Velasco gives the news. - I strongly urge you to prepare the country for war!

- War? Ha ha ha... who are you do dictate the terms of my government? The counter-reformism isn't for Portugal! We are very well the way we are, we don't need to change the religious policy! And I won't be the ruler that will ever change it...

- You're not the ruler... you are the regent of D. Sebastião!

- I'm sorry... just got infuriate.

- Anyway, the Papal States are the first country to officialy adopt this religious policy, just like it was supposed to happen.

- I could guess so. And, look east. Yes, beyond our frontiers with Spain. What would el-Rey D. Felipe I and his habsburg cousins think about it? Those fanatic pigs!

- Time will tell us.

November 11th: Velasco received the news that the people in the province of Zimbabwe has happily accepted God as their Lord, el-Rei D. Sebastião as sovereign and Portuguese as language. Araujo, the clerigy, the court, the people in Lisboa, everyone cheered and celebrated with the great news. Now Zimbabwe doesn't only mean rich gold mines: it also means taxes!

December 6th: The new colonial policy of Araujo is giving clear results in Australia. Now the entire territory is claimed with trading posts, of course not counting the colony of Nova Lagos, in Yarra, which was founded some decades ago by remanescents of the Francisco Xavier's expedition there.

090.jpg

May 20th, 1574: Another attack of spanish irregulars was defeated by the brave portuguese troops in Cartagena. It was discovered that the spanish wanted to use the portuguese territory as a route to the former Inca lands. This only makes the portuguese garrison to become stronger and better prepared!

Lisboa, 5th August, 1574 A.D.. The Imperial Palace "D. João III de Avis".

- Yes, Araujo. Our garrison is being repeatdly attacked in Cartagena. This, allied to rumours that D. Sebastião has been kidnapped, is causing much obscurantism with our people. They think of a spanish conspiracy, founded by D. Felipe I, with the goal of taking the portuguese throne - Velasco tells.

091.jpg

- D. Sebastião kidnapped?

- Well, that's what they say.

- But I received a letter from a friend of him yesterday, telling that he's almost prepared to come back to Lisboa next year and, finally, assume the throne! And that he is being secured by a whole cavalry brigade!
- Araujo finds it's strange.

- Yes, I know. But... people like gossips, specially about the royal family.

- D. Felipe would really have enough reasons to make this. Remember: if D. Sebastião "dissappears", who would be the king? Who else has claims on the portuguese throne, who else has strong family ties with the House of Avis? Only himself, the spanish king, el-Rey D. Felipe I!

- I shall check it out, liege. I will check if it's only a rumour. Besides, we need to get ready for anything!

- Yes... go check it out. Ah, oh yes! We finally have the money to send missionaries to Zacatecas! Around 950 ducats... take the money. Use it to print a lot of bibles in Aztec. No. Use it to buy printing machinery and take it there, because the population is too big that we'll need to print the bibles there. And use the money to fund the missionaries!
- Araujo ordered.

- Right now! For the Portuguese Empire!

Lisboa, 1st March, 1575 A.D.. The Imperial Palace "D. João III de Avis".

At lunch, Velasco and Araujo discuss international and religious affairs.

- So... we were right. D. Felipe has officialy adopted the counter-reformation movement. Now Spain is a country of catholic fanatics that, with the minor sign of heresy, go burning live people, throwing them to the bottom of the sea, taking them to the highest mountains in Perú and throwing them away, torturing, just to say the least! And even on the colonies!

- And do you like it, Velasco?
- Araujo is suspicious.

- Of course not. Well, heretics must be punished!

- Shut up! They can be punished anywhere, but not in Portugal! Here, they are incentivated - yes, incentivated - to convert, but not obligated!

- Okay, okay... anyway, I can see his big eyes looking at us, looking at our religious freedom, our succesfull traders and colonists, our gold mines, the rich cities of Sevilla and Alexandria, the strategic colony of Cartagena, Mexico, and the Indies! And yes, our african colonies! And Brazil, and Australia!

- The only problem is: I doubt that China would cooperate with us on a possible war against D. Felipe. Well, the alliance is soon expiring, so we can look for allies here in Europe!

- Exactly. Well, let me give you some good news now. The people on the province of Sofala, in Zimbabwe, has happily accepted the catholic faith! And they can now be considered true portuguese!
- Velasco is happy.

- But that's just fine!

Then, whilst they talk... a man escorted by three armoured and heavy armed guards quickly enters the room, without even asking for permission.

- Who are you? Tell me now! And why do you enter here without my permission? - Araujo is infuriated. - Guards!

- I am el-Rei D. Sebastião and came here to claim my rightful throne.

Amric: Yes. D. Sebastião is now eighteen and he's able to rule. Officially, he would be able to rule at fourteen, but I made it until eighteen so I could have better excuses for the upcomming things... I know you understand me!

Judge: Thank you, man! Yes, big issues await us... really big... just think about Erika Blow's things and you'll see how big they are...;)

Lady Europa: Wrong colour? How come, Becky?:D The white spots must be painted green! Yes... take your time. You don't need to read it all at once. Howerver, I'm glad to see thee around here!

--
Friends, I have made a mistake. If you didn't notice, I was calling D. Sebastião as "el-Rei" ("the king", in ancient Portuguese). But Portugal is now the Portuguese Empire and not a kingdom, right? Remember that D. João III founded the Portuguese Empire and started calling himself Emperor?

Sorry for my mistake... I won't commit this anymore!:D
