I love it when the french have civil wars! Somehow they always manage to bounce back though............Things are quiet in Africa for you? How did poland get thrace? Who owns the Baleares? I couldn't tell the color. Thanks for another installment.

Gaijin de Moscu: Glad to see you like it! Well, my work is simply worthy nothing when compared to your own AARs, but feel free to read anyway! :D Nice to see you starting your game as Portugal too... a very nice nation to play, for sure!

Amric: In the Americas and Asia there were no major changes that I have noticed. France and Austria are imploding, which is good. I don't know if we have the At the Walls of Paris event on the EEP (I don't like such event), so we have the possibility of continued civil wars in France, which is nice!

Klink: The french manage to bounce back because of the At the Walls of Paris event, unfortunatelly. Hardcoded, I say! :) Things in Africa were quiet, except for the recently succesfull conversions in Zimbabwe, which is good. Poland got Thrace several decades ago. It was IIRC during my last war against the ottos, when they were fighting everyone. Since they never owned Thrace in this game, it could never be their capital, so... The Baleares are portuguese, of course! :D Gained when peace was signed on the war against Aragon!

Judge: Thanks! Not as great as your stories, but I try to do my best! :D

Klink: The CoT could show up either if Byzantium survived or if Thrace turns to be the ottoman capital. So, there is no Thrace CoT.

Alexandru H.: In fact, the things start to happen in 1578, so I still have twelve years. And yes, I know what will my choice be! :p

Chapter VIII, part V

Chapter VIII, part V

Emperor Sebastião I (June/1557 - August/1578)

* * *

Lisboa, 1st November, 1566 A.D.. The Imperial Palace "D. João III de Avis".

- Velasco! Good news I received! Please, open a good champagne! - Araujo asks.

- Champagne? Sorry, but... are you crazy? This means french drink!

- Yes, champagne. I have great news regarding France! Yes! Do you want to know them?

- Well... of course!
- Velasco opens a bottle of champagne. - So, be it! Take it!

Araujo takes a glass of the french drink.

- Thank you, thank you! Well, the news are: yes, it is related to the french implosion! The people on the city of Chambéry revolted and declared independence! Now they claim the old throne of Savoy! But that's not only this news...

- More?

- Yes, more champagne, please.

- No, I mean... More news on France?
- Velasco asks.

- No! But on Austria! Well... The province of Carpathia has changed hands due to the rebels! Being loyal to the polish king, they are now a part of the kingdom of Poland!

- Great! Now the austrian territory is split...
- Velasco concludes. - But hey, don't you fear the recent polish growth?

- No. I have even convinced one of D. Sebastião's cousins - since he has no brothers or sisters - to move to Poland and marry one of the sons of king Zygmunt II August! And she was very well received in Krakow.

- Great! A new alliance, perhaps?

- No. Our compromise is with the Empire of China.

January 7th, 1567: To ensure Araujo's policies of consolidation, and to speed the absortion of the overseas people on the Empire, a new group of missionaries was formed. They were sent to the mexican province of Saltillo, to start conversions on the former aztec lands.

Lisboa, 2nd March, 1567 A.D.. The Imperial Palace "D. João III de Avis".

Having lunch, Araujo updates Velasco with more news.

- Well, now it seems that Aragon is also starting to implode. The people of the reformed city of Tolouse declared independence and war started!

- Which throne they claim, Araujo?

- Rather odd name... They call themselves Huguenots...

- Well, infidels they are, so I support Aragon!

- Are you crazy? You... won't... support... Aragon... no... matter... what!
- Araujo shouts. - Do you hear me?

- Sorry... they are infidels, you know!

- And you also know my policies regarding religion!

- But the people say you were also a "furious catholic"!
- Velasco arguments.

- Yes, I was. But people change, don't you think? And you'll also change! - Araujo breaths. - By the way, those aren't the only news.

- So, more yet?

- Yes. King Charles IX refused to support Aragon on the war against the Hughenots! They broke their alliance!

- But this is great! Our enemies are each day weaker and weaker! I love it! May I open a bottle of champagne?

- No! Open wine from the Cape of Good Hope... it tastes revenge!

January 4th, 1568: To keep the work of integrating the mexican population within and with the Empire, missionaries were now sent to the province of Jalisco. This time they carry a more powerfull weapon: some printed bibles translated to the aztec language! Although the Pope wouldn't like the idea - the bible must be always written in Latin -, he wasn't told of this fact, so everything went OK.

Lisboa, 8th February, 1568 A.D.. The Imperial Palace "D. João III de Avis".

Araujo receives a letter. He opens it.

"Dear Araujo, Regent of the Portuguese Empire,

I am concerned. There were rebels. And the rebels won. I mean... there were rebels in Constantinople, and they succeeded on expelling the polish nobles from there. They proclaimed loyalty to Sultan Selim II of the Ottoman Empire, that unholy country.

This is a very hard defeat to christanity. And might even be a hard defeat to your trade, since now they control the land they always wanted, the City of Men's Desire. May also cause troubles to our trading relationship in Alexandria.

Please, be carefull. The ottomans are an evil enemy and they are also very powerfull.

Yours sincerily,

King Zygmunt II August of Poland and Lithuania."

- Isn't it time for an alliance with Zygmunt, Araujo? - Velasco asks.

- No! My compromise is with the Chinese Empire!

- Ok. Anyway, it's sad to know that finally, after centuries of tries, the Ottomans conquered Constantinople. Heathens... Infidels!

- Velasco...

- Oh sorry.

- Not good for us, either. You know... but do you wonder if Selim II has intentions of moving his capital to Constantinople, in stead of keeping it in Bursa?

- Possible, but only him has the answer.

If you have time to translate the bible into Aztec you have WAY to much time on your hands! Still, a good update, and a real shame that Constantinople fell to rebels and then became part of the Turk...Truly a horror to be visited upon the world....

Alexandru H.: Gualatel is such a beautiful word, isn't it? :D So... gualatel to you again!

Amric: Nothing that a quick google search won't do for you, right? :p And no! The ottomans don't deserve Contantinople! Never! Maybe a crusade will be called? Maybe nothing will be done? Or whatever? Who knows?...

Chapter VIII, part VI

Chapter VIII, part VI

Emperor Sebastião I (June/1557 - August/1578)

* * *

April 24th, 1569: To ensure Araujo's policies of finding non-gold sources of income for the Portuguese Empire, brave colonists founded the colony of Paraíba in the island of Mauritius, replacing an old and small trading post there. As they can plant sugar there, Araujo celebrates the foundation of this colony.

Lisboa, 2nd June, 1569 A.D.. The Imperial Palace "D. João III de Avis".

Another letter arrived to Araujo. This time it is from Afonso de Albuquerque II, son of the great Afonso de Albuquerque, the portuguese general who conquered Malacca for D. Manuel. Born in Malacca and already a bit old, he became the portuguese governor for the East Indies.

"Your most imperial regent Araujo,

I come to inform you that there were rebels on the neighbouring province of Johor. They even managed to capture the capital, which has the same name. Claiming to have broken their ties with the kingdom of Ayuthhaya, and respectfully with king Maha Thammaraja I, they request aid. They promise loyalty to the Portuguese Empire and Emperor Sebastião, as well as portuguese soverignty over Johor.

It seems that the cause is a religious turmoil over Ayuthhaya. Mostly budhists, they also like tolerance with people from other religions. But the muslims in Johor don't like the idea and were felt like hunted by budhist fanatics. Therefore, knowing of your policies of true tolerance, they seek protection.

I strongly urge you to make an wise decision, and I know you will.

God bless you, the portuguese people and the Portuguese Empire!

D. Afonso de Albuquerque II, governor of the East Indies."

087.jpg

- First of all, Araujo, I want to know: what are, precisely, the East Indies? - Velasco asks.

- Sure, I respond it to you. The East Indies comprehend the portuguese domains east of, but not including, Calcutta and west of, but not including, Mexico. Thus, they include Malacca, Johor, Jambi, and colonies in Jakarta and in Australia. Does it make clear for you?

- More or less. If there are East Indies, there should also be West Indies, right?

- Exactely. They are our domains west of, but not including, Bombay and east of the Cape of Good Hope. Thus, they include the islands of Mauritius, Bourbon, Mahe and Zanzibar and our possessions in Zimbabwe and South Africa. Understood?
- Araujo didacticaly explained.

- Yes! Thank you very much! And so I may conclude that the Middle Indies are the territories in India proper, between and including Bombay and Calcutta, correct?

- Yes, but don't call them Middle Indies. Simply call it... India. Okay?

- For sure, Lord
- Velasco drinks indian tea with azorian sugar. - But hey, what's your decision regarding D. Afonso's letter?

- Tell him that I accept. This will not only strenght our position in the East Indies, but also provides a new source of income and a new port.

- Are you going to inform Maha Thammaraja I of your decision?

- And do I need?

- Er... no.

- Anyway it's simple. If he complains, well the Holy Imperial Portuguese Armed Forces and the Invencible Imperial Portuguese Armada are ready to teach him some "things"... and I'm sure that chinese troops are also crazy to cross their border!
- Araujo states. - And subject dismissed. Let's go to the fields and have some horse riding.

- Most apropriate, sire!

Lisboa, 4th November, 1569 A.D.. The Imperial Palace "D. João III de Avis".

The imperial post service is really busy. Now Araujo receives a letter from the french king.

"Imperial Regent Araujo,

I write this letter to inform you that from now on the portuguese merchants aren't welcome to trade in Lyon. And I also want to inform you that my alliance with Aragon is restablished, plus the kingdom of Tirol also joined us on the alliance.

Perhaps this might make you think twice before interfering on french and aragonese matters.

King Charles IX of France."

- So be it - Araujo told.

- No revenge? Not a single word? - Velasco thinks it's strange.

- Although I do keep an eye at the french civil war, my business is away from Europe. And our merchants have far more profitable places to trade, such as Alexandria and Calcutta. Why to bother? The french can't even trade here at Lisboa! I assume that this is enough revenge.

- Ok then. I'm no one to question your decisions.

- As long as you have a valid point, yes you can question them.

- But I do have a questionment to make!
- Velasco interrupted.

- So do it!

- You denied further information about the incorporation of Constantinople within the Ottoman Empire!

- No, I didn't deny you. I simply have no further information!
- Araujo stated. - Well, Selim II is a very weak sultan. If he was just a little thoughtfull, he would move his capital and open a new center of trade. But hell... all he wants is a big harem! He doesn't even know what is a vizir!

- Better for us then.

- Yes. For sure.

January 6th, 1570: A new missionary group was formed. Taking previous advices, they printed more bibles in Aztec and then sailed to Michoagan, with the most holy quest of teaching the people there the wonders of God and the beautifullness of the great Portuguese language.

December 7th, 1570: News reached the Imperial Palace that Camões discovered gold mines on a place called Monterrey, northweast of Mexico. Contrary to the past times, Araujo ordered that no colonist should leave Portugal to settle there. Even trading posts wouldn't be built. Let's increase our non-gold income, he says. It is causing too much inflation!

I'm with Judge on that...and more Aztec printed bibles...sounds like they will soon be Catholic, as they should be! Another excellent update!

Judge: yes. Everyone who wants to join the Portuguese Empire is welcome to do so! Hey! The only Empire where "the sun never falls down"! :D

Amric: Soon they will belong to the one and true faith... believe me! There's an apparent contradiction on this. Araujo wants them to speak Portuguese but the missionaries carry bibles printed in Aztec! But hey, it's only a decoy to make things easier, isn't it? :p

Klink: I don't remember how much I spent early in the game converting two muslim provinces (Tangiers and Alexandria), but now, converting pagan ones, until now I spent 250 - 300 ducats per province. Zacatecas would cost me around 950 to do it though, but of course is a target. And 1578 is comming... soon I'll have to deal with Europe! :D

Jwolf: I don't think it would be a good idea to put a TP in Monterrey. The ToT is still active, and had one spanish soldier walked through it, BAM, it's now spanish! Unless I secured it with troops, but I'm already near my support limit, so it wouldn't be a good idea. But yes, you gave me a great idea...:D My gold inflation is IIRC around 0.20% now, most probably a bit lower. I didn't touch the game since I played it, so it may be slight different.

Alexandru H.: Yes, they are evil... but the dacians are worse! By the way, once, playing another game, I typed difrules and started to fight everybody. I got surprised when my troops were all killed anyway! :p But I was a true newbie those days, and now I know the reason why that happens.
