The Reign of Robert I. (1098-1109)
Depression, War and Murder

Robert I. was very different from his father. His military talents were by far more limited than those of William I.. However his capeability to intrigue was far greater. But these were not the only differences. Where William had more or less over his whole life remained a rather simple down-to-earth-man Robert as a schollary theologian saw himeself as intelectualy superior. This view of himeself stood in sharp contrast to the fact that he had a strong lisp and was therefore often incapeable of bringing across what he realy thought. Furthermore he had developed a cruel personality. This all together made Robert a very ruthless ruler.

His first actions were to crush the uprising that had started in the last years of his fathers reign. He managed to do so by April 1099. He now redistributed the titles he had taken of the vanquished. He also reforged the old alliance of his father with France.
But allready Roberts next step created a big scandal. In order to make the King of the Scots more content he agreed that Williams widow Ragnillt Dunkeld should marry Echoeid Dunkeld, son and heir of Donald Dunkeld, Duke of Lothian. Not only was it incredible to forcefully remarry a Kings widow but also to make her marry someone within her own family! However Robert had his will done but the court establishment was now deeply distrustfull of him.

France in the meantime had been crusading and secured the holy city of Jerusalem and great parts of Egypt.
King Robert could not participate in this because he was greatly in debt. But instead of saving money by avoiding unnecessary wars Robert decided to punish the counts of Thüringen and Lausitz for declaring themeselves independent. Although the campaign was finished by 1101 the realm was throne into a serious economic crisis.
In spite of this Robert insited that his great Marshall should be rewarded for his great deeds with 100 gold pieces! Again Robert had poured scorn upon his subjects.
So bad was the financall situation that the royal castle of Hampshire, that had been built by his father William, could not be maintained any more!
The only good news of this year was that Robert became the controller of the new Pope Anselm.
He used this position to excommunicate Duncan, King of Scots, effectifly ruining all attempts of William to normalise the relationship of the two realms.
Robert also took the oportunity to claim to be the true King of the Scots, beliving naivly that the Scots would rather follow him than their excommunicated King.
In 1103 Adémar de Toney, Count of Porto and Lothian, declared himself independant. Robert swore revenge but because of the bad situation of the treasury was unable to turn his words into action.
Instead he decided to build a monument through which he would be rememberd in all times. He orderd a church, second to no other in England, to be built in Hampshire. He had a big inscription erected in it saying: I Robert I., King of England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland, protector of Christianity, have built this church to comemorate my in the whole word unreached virtues, piety and everlasting Glory. This shall be a place of workship for all my sucessors and those who wish to follow in my footsteps."
In Decembre when Robert was busy organising christmas news reached him that the Count of Evreux had started an uprising against his son Robert Duke of Normandy. Robert quickly mobilised his vassals and crushed that ridicoulus bid for independance. The county was given to the Bishop of Arques.
But the reasons for the uprising were not removed by this victory. Robert, Duke of Normandy, had in a stroke of madness killed his own son and was now hated by all his vassals. Logically in 1105 the County of Avrances also rebelled against the kindslayer Duke. Once again the uprising was quickly supresed and the land given to the Duke of Brittany.

Robert now felt that he was at the absolut hight of his power and nothing was impossible for him. His first horrifying action of the year 1106 was to have his wife Emma de Bretevil murderd. This had three reasons. The first was that he had hated his wife since he had to marry her nearly 30 years ago. The second was that by remarring he could fill his treasury again. And the third a marriage was always a good political instrument.
And so not even 6 days after his wifes murder he married the 17 year old Elayne Dunkeld, who was related to the scotische King. He hoped to strenghten his claim on the scotish crown through this. Furthermore the marriage duty brought the Kingdom 800 gold pices.
Nevertheless Robert was not to enjoy his new wife for two long because two months later the King of France started a war against the Duke of Poitou and Bourdaux. Robert felt that he had to join this war so that the frensh King would not gain the upper hand in France.
The campaign took only 2 months. Now the former great dutchy was divided between the Kingdoms of France and England.

But disaster struck only 2 months later when the frensh King declared war upon the Kingdom.
Robert, seeing his honor tarnished by this betrayal and probably thinking he was a reincarnation of Caesar, personally led his forces into France.

The first major engagement of the war took place at Poitiers on the 28th of March 1107. The english under Robert I. had 7.500 men wheras the 6.500 frensh warriors were led by a nobleman called Eudes de Lomagne.
The english had a considerable amount of knights, archers and light infantry more than the frensh and this proved deceisive.
Roberts marshal William, who did most of the commanding while Robert lead the knights, orderd his knights not to engage for now. Instead he sent the light infantry ahead against the enemy lines. The frensh knights at once attacked and chrushed the english who quickly retreated with the frensh on their heels. But this was exactly what William had wanted. While the frensh knights were still pursing their enemy suddenly out of the high grases on their flanks english archers appeared and opende fire on them. Enraged the frensh turned towards the archers. When they were only meters away from the english archers the pikemen stood up out of the high grass and corn fields which had covered them uptil then. The frensh had no time to react and most ran directly into the line of pikemen. The rest was so terrified that they fled in disorder.
In the meantime the english heavy infantry, aided by the light cavalry, had attacked the frensh centre and advanced considerably. Now with the threat of the frensh knights eliminated William gave signal to his king that he and his knights could now charge into the enemies rear. This decided the battle.

The frensh lost 2.500 men but english casulties were also consderably high at 1.000 men.

In May, while he was still fighting for several frensh strongholds, Robert decided that not that Jerusalem had be freed a new crusade should be started. He therefore petitoned the Pope to call a crusade to take Palermo from the infedils. The Pope complied at once.

In June the King fought several battles against scattered and weaker frensh armies. But disaster struck when the King was badly wounded in another great but indeceisiv victory over the frensh on the 21. of August.
Nevertheless Robert continued to wage war in France from his bed.
However now with his health getting worse and worse Robert was highly considerd about the sucession question. His first born son could impossibly become King beeing a kindslayer. This would destroy the Kingdom!
Robert therefore in cold blood ordered his own son to be executed.
Robert, Duke of Normandy, was seized by the Kings men in the dead of night on the 14th of June 1108. He was brought to the Tower of London were confessions of the murder, sorcery, making a alliance with the devil and other crimes were extracted out of him. He was openly executed on July the second.
The war in France continued to drag on with mixed fortune. But the King would not live to see its end. He died of old age on Feburary 15th 1109. He was 54 years old. In sharp contrast to William he was not generaly mourned. Most people considerd him a tyrann who had crippeld englands economy, spilt the blood of his own family and involfed the Kingdom in an endless war with France.
The solid base of faith in the de Normandy family which William had established had been destroyed.
The Kings second born son Robert, who was crowned Robert II. on Feburary 30th., was up to a great task in order to hold the Kingdom together.

Here end the chronicles of the Life of King Robert I.

The Reign of Robert II. (1109-1148)
Civil War, Death and great Ambitions (1109-1121)

Robert II. personality was very different from his fathers. Where Robert I. had been arrogant and full of himeself Robert II. was modest. Where Robert I. had been a cruel autocrat who shared power and glory with nobody Rober II. was a trusting friendly person. Where Robert I. had allready been 44 years old when he became King and somehow content with what he had reached in life Robert II. was only 19 years old when he was crowned and still full of energy and ambitions.

And in deed his reign would be full of rememberable events. But in spite all of this Roberts real abilities were relativly limited. Although his education had made an martial cleric out of him he was an even worse warrior than Robert I.. His stewardship and intrigue abilities were below average. Furthermore he was a coward which was a clear disatvantage when comparing him with his ancestors. William had been the greatest warrior of his days and Robert I. for all his faults had been no coward and severly wounded in battle.
The only field where he clearly beat his father and grandfather was diplomacy.

Roberts first task was to fight the south frensh Count of Armaganc who had declared himeself independant. The fight was quickly concluded but an even bigger conflict broke out when the Duke of Poitou declared himeself independant.
Robert mobilised the troops of the Duke of Brittany and orderd them to march into Poitou.
The Duke took two provinces for the King before he meet with the rebels in Poitou itself. It was a hard battle with both sides nummbering round about 3.000 men. In the end the Duke of Brittany still had the upper hand but he had lost 2.100 men. On the other side nearly 2.850 rebels lay dead.
However even though this was a military defeat the rebel propaganda turned it into a moral victory claiming that most the rebel casulties were prisoners who were executed after the battle.
As a direct reaction the Duke of Sussex rebelled against the King in June 1112.
Robert mobilised 8.700 of his retainers and lead them against the nearly 5.000 men of the Duke before he could unite his force with his vassals armies.
The sources about the battle are very vague but although the Duke was the far more exsperienced commander the King won with loss of less than 1.000 men.
In August the Duke of Poitou submitted to the King ending the conflict in France. In late September the castle of the Duke of Sussex had been taken and Robert made a very mercifull peace proposal. The Duke should give up his Duke title and pay 280 gold pieces but was allowed to keep his independance.
This grately improved Robert reputation and prestige so that the danger of civil war was removed from his realm. It seemed Robert had broken free of his fathers heritage.

In the summer of 1113 Robert decided to wage war against some petty muslim states in spain that had poped up after the fall of the once mighty christian kingdoms.
His first victim was the Beydom of Viscaya. Robert and his 5.500 men easily defeated the 2.000 muslim with only 170 own casulties. The King himeself showed great heroism in the battle, perhaps to counter his image as a coward. By the begining of 1114 Viscaya was conquered and the King now turned to the Beydom of Asturia.
Again victory was quickly secured and once again Robert showed great heroism in battle. After this Robert returned home and gave the newly conquered teritories to loyal vassals to improve the royal reputation.

In 1115 tragedy struck for Robert when his wife Etiennete died in labour with his 6 child. It was said that the King never was the same man again and caried this wound around with him to the end of his life.
In honour of his wife he had the Church of Hamsphire, which had been built by his father, exspanded and his wife buried there. It was now one of the biggest churches in europe.

However like his predecesors Robert too knew how to make political use of a marriage. He quickly arranged a marriage between himeself and Martha Capet, daughter of Hugh Capet, King of France.
For the next to years the King mostly retired to his estates praying for his wife an trying to cope with the pain of loss. This however did not prevent him from producing 2 children with Martha.
In 1117 the Counts of Ulaid and Tir Connail asked Robert to become their liege. Robert accepted at once. Now only one province defied the King of Ireland. The same year the King gave a great royal feast and declared that he would forge an empire worthy of Alexander the Great, Caesar, or Carlmagne. Most people saw this as a sign that the King had completly recovered but where also woried what venture could be so great that it could be compared with Alexanders deeds?
The preperations went on until 1121 then the King was ready...

So this was the first part of Robert II. reign. Stay tuned for the next episode in which Robert starts the biggest war in the realms history.

The Reign of Robert II. (1109-1148)
Crusades and Two Kingdoms(1121-1127)

In October 1121 Robert, King of England, Wales and Ireland, sent word to Hugh Capet, King of France, that he "through his strengh of rule in France and his claims through his marriage to Marthe Capet" had claimed lordship over France. He orderd him to prepare for his crowning in Paris and to subdue to his royal authority. Of course the King did no such thing and Robert began to ship his men across the channel.
By Janurary 1121 he had assembled over 20.000 men in Normandy. Furthermore he hired a mercinary company of 1.000 frensh knights.
The frensh had not, as the King had feared, attacked before he could assemble his men. Nevertheless he stayed on the safe side. He took 10.000 men and marched on Paris.
There he defeated a 3.200 men strong army, inflicting 2.700 casulties and losing only 200 men. Round about the same time the Kings over forces und the command of Lord Osmond de Conteville had destroyed a frensh army in Anjou, leaving over 1.300 frenshmen dead on the battelfield.
By the end of March Paris had been conquered and Robert towards Blois.
There he again Robert destroyed a scattered frensh army of little over 1.00 men.
By now the King second army had taken Anjou and was marching on to Poiters.
The Kings strategy had worked like a clockwork. Both armies cut through fresh resistance with ease, making it impossible for the Hugh Capet to mass enough troops to confront them.
By Juli Robert had occupied all the royal provinces and forced Hugh Capet to abdict both as King of France and Duke of Bourbon.
The coronation of Robert took place on the 16th of July in Maine, Normandy, a clear sign to the frensh nobility to where they would now be ruled from. All important nobles of France were present that day to pledge alligance to Robert except for Hugh Capet, who as "Duke of Medina", still did not submit.
Robert had nearly doubled the realms size.

The dark blue provinces are part of Hugh Capets demense, now Duke of Medina.
In August Robert married his eldest son Abelard to Dorothea von Franken, daughter of Albrecht von Franken, King of Burgundy and Italy.
In 1123 Robert got news that the crusade to free Palermo, which he had called into life, had been brought to a victorious conclusion by the Duke of Apulia.
But the conquest of France still had not been enought for Robert. He felt that if he wanted to go down in history as one of the greatest conquerers ever he would have to go to war once more.
Again Spain was his target. In April 1123 he had assembled a force of 4.000 men in Viscaya and opened the campaign by declaring war upon the Beydom of Granada which held parts of the fromer Kingdom of Narvarra. By November the two provinces of Naravarra and Rioja had been taken from the muslims and Robert now moved against the Sheikdom of Calatayud.
After some savage fighting 3 more provinces were conquered. By Sommer 1124 the Kingdom was at peace again. To appease his vassals Robert gave away most of these provinces.

All nobles thought that after several years of campaigning the King like his grandfather would probably retire into private life and devout his full energy to the exspansion of the economy. But as it was said before Robert II. was probably one of the most ambitous Kings in Europe. During a feast to celebrate the marriage of his daugther Judith de Normandy to Galindo de Barcelona, Robert announced that he would go to war against Norway.
"For centuries these vikings have pillaged our lands and defied english rule. Just 60 years ago one of their Kings tried to usurp the throne but was repelled by british arms. Now I will set an end to this once and for all. We shall rule Norway! They shall never threaten our peacfull Isle again!", Robert declared and orderd his men mobilized.
The Kings plan was very similar to the one used in France. The King would lead a strong army into Norway itself and conquer the norwegian Kings strongholds while a second army would take the norwegian possesions in northern Scotland and repell any norwegian attempt to land in Britain.

In April 1126, while the Kings men were still on their way to Norway, the norwegians had allready been defeated in norhtern Scotland.
By August Robert had taken Rogaland and Bergen when he faced a stronge norwegian army. His 8.000 men were faced with 3.300 norwegians. Although the Kings military abilities were very limited this was not that bad because he relegated most military tasks to his excellent marshall. The norwegian army completly lacked knights and modern equipment and was compleltly destroyed. All in all 2.800 were killed while the english only suffered 300 casulties.
Now Norwegian resistance completly broke down. By April 1127 Robert made peace on the condition that he would be made King of Norway. England had reaches his greatest exspansion in it's history.

Considering that Robert II., except for his diplomatic skills, is quite a average monarch his deeds so far have been great in deed. But there are still 21 more years to come. A lot can happen over the cause of them...

He's got to be racking in the badboy though, with two king-titles taken.
Not that bad actually. Only grabed two titles and then enforced them in a peace treaty. And all the provinces out of his spanish conquest were given away to his vassals. So his BB is not good but not bad either.

The Reign of Robert II. (1109-1148)
The Rise and Fall of a Caesar (1127-1137)

Just days after Robert had been crowned King of Norway in Bergen Malcom Dunkeld, Count of Tir Egohain asked Robert to become his liege. Most amazed that a Dunkeld had broken away from Scotland Robert took the chance at once. Now the whole of Ireland was under the Kings rule. The next 1 1/2 years where peacfull. This was mainly due to the fact that the King was in debt with nearly 800 gold pieces.
In November 1128 however, while the King was busy making arrangemants for a feast to celebrate his 10th year in power, his ally the King of Burgundy and Italy declared war upon the Sheikdom of Rosello. The King only mobilized two Counts on the border to deal with this threat.

In 1130 the Kingdom entered a new instable phase with war against inner and outer enemies. In January the Count of Ângermanland declared independence.
However this was to unimportant for the King to react.
Far more dangerous was the "Isle of Man Rebellion". The Count of Isle of Man and Sligo declared war upon the english King, trying to start a huge irish rebellion.
Even though not all irish Lords were absolutly loyal to Robert they kept out of the fight. Simply refusing both the rebels plee for support and the Kings order to mobilize their men.
Unfortunatly the King got involved in a war in France at the same time. The Duke of Warwick asked for the kings help against the County of Bordeaux, which had attacked one of their vassals.
In March several welsh vassals of the King beat the rebel leader Imchad Ui Mórdha on the Isle of Man. It was one of the few infantry dominated battles in the middle ages with no knights involfed. In the end the superior numbers and better archers of the welsh won the day for the King.

By August both wars were won and the realm was once again at peace. But not for long. Allready in Spring 1132 Robert started another war in Spain. Although he was allready greatly stressed he insisted on leading the troops personally. "Did Hannibal and Alexander score their victories from the desk?", he is recalled to have asked.
The Kings first victim was the Sheikdom of Castellon. Roberts 2.700 men faced 1.400 muslims. It was one of Roberts most glorious victories. Not only did he eliminate 1.250 enemies with the loss of only 380 men but he also showed great heroism in battle convincing most his contemporaries that he was not a coward. After the conquest of Castellon the campaign reached a sudden end when the King got news that his wife had fallen seriously ill.
The King at once returned home. The next 8 months the King dedicated his whole energy to taking care of his wife.
But it was all in vain. On October 18th Anno Domini 1133 Marthe Capet, Queen of England, France, Norway, Ireland and Wales, died aged 38. She was buried in Orlean after her father Hugh Capet had refused to have her buried in Paris. Although his relationship to his second wife had never been as strong as to his first the King was again greatly griefed. He was after all a caring and emotional person. He openly declared his intention never to marry again. However his councilers convinced him that now that the number of his vassals had more than doubled it would be wise to marry the daughter of a mighty vassal. Once again Robert bowed down and placed the interest of the state over his own.

On Feburary 9th 1135 a new Pope, who no longer was controlled by Robert, called for a crusade to liberate Constantinopel from the Seljuks.
Robert immidietly became obsessed with conquering the city. What greater Trophie for his empire could their be than the queen of cities? This would secure his place among the Great in the history books.
Robert mobilized 30.000 men and orderd them to march on Constantinopel. He himeself lead the army.
By the time they reached the city over half a year had passed and the army had been reduced to 18.000 men.
After several months the city of Constantinopel was finally taken and Robert marchen into the city in triumph. It was the first triumph since that of Belizar during the reign of Justinian (527-565) in Konstantinopel. Robert was greatly impressed with the "queen of cities". He visited the Hagia Sophia, took a blessing from the Patriarch, visited the royal palaces and ancient roman buildings and was declared "Roman Emporer" by the greek nobles. After two weeks however he moved on to Asia Minor and conquered several provinces until September 1136. Then however the Seljuk Sultan arrived with 22.000 men and attacked Roberts army. By now he could bearly field 14.000 men. After the inital skirmishes Robert withdrew.
He hoped to hold Konstantinopel with greek auxilia troops.
It took the Turks several months to reconquer Asia Minor but on Feburary 10th the turks attacked with 27.000 men. Only 15.500 men stood on the Kings side.
The heat, Roberts lack of military talent, the Sultans great abilities made it one of the worst defeats in the Kingdoms history. The entire army was destroyed. The Turks only lost round about 5.000 men. Originaly Robert had wanted to either die in the defence of Constantinopel or throw himeself into his sword like the generals of the ancient world.
But once again his generals and councilers managed to talk him out of it claiming that the Kingdom would fall apart if he was to die now.
And so the King of England, France, Norway, Ireland and Wales had to run home disguised as a simple pilgrim.

He would never forget this humiliation.

Ouch! That is one very nasty defeat. If there are any would-be rebels they should definitely revolt en masse just about now...

Glad you like tha AAR! Your first two points should not be to dificult but after this exsperience with the Turks it seems a bit unlikely that I will confront them again so soon. Not at least before I have a base of operation closer to their realm.

The Reign of Robert II. (1109-1148)
A shaken King, a trembling Empire (1137-1142)

When Robert returned home in July 1138 he was only a shadow of his former self. The disastrous defeat had destroyed his self confidence. He found it nearly unberable that he, the King had survived while nearly all other men had died in defence of the great city of Constantinopel. It made him very sad in deed to know that they had not liberated the people of the city but only managed that they were at the mercy if the turks once more.
Furthermore the long travel home in poverty had also greatly distroyed his spirit.
The men who came back from this crusade no longer sought to be the equal of Alexander the Great or Caesar. He only wanted to preserve his Kingdom for his son and die.
Once one of his old friends asked him what had happened to Robert King of England, France, Norway, Ireland and Wales, he replied:
"There is no may of this name among the living. He died on the fields of Byzantion."

Considering the terible state the King was in it was exstrodinary that it took nearly a year until a vassal took the chance to declare war upon the Kingdom.
But in Decembre 1138 a count in english spain rebelled. But if he thought that the King would because of his apathy not react he was mistaken.
The once kind and forgiving man had become ruthless and vengefull when it came to holding his realm together. He mobilized over 5.000 men in Spain and quickly crushed the uprising.
This actually impressed the many plotters in the Kingdom that much that they postponed all their plans.
After exactly 2 unevenfull years the Pope called for a new crusade this time to free Jerusalem once more.
This was the oportunity Roberts enemies had waited for. Several counts in France declared war upon him together with the Duke of Toulouse, which took with it 4 more counts claiming that they could not follow an "unpious King" who disregarded the christian cause.
While the King was still trying to organize a counter strike in France the next bad news came. The Kingdom of Scotland saw the perfect oportunity to strike and declared war.
But this was still not the end of it. At the end of June the Pope urged Robert to plead to join the crusade or face excomunication. The King reluctantly agreed.
In France however the Duke of Hainaut had beaten several english armies although they were far greater than his own.
Roberts, never a great military, only reaction was to mobilize more armies to throw at him.

The next disaster came in July when the Duke of Bourgogne joined the rebells and took 7 provinces with him.
In August Maine was lost to the rebels. The King feared an invasion of his english posessions. The only good news he got was that after several defeats the Scots were ready to make peace and pay a tribute of 140 gold pieces.

In November 1141 the King mobilized his men in the Near East to strike for Jerusalem.

Unfortunatly this brought the Kingdom with the Fatamids, which would perhaps mean the loss of all posessions in the area.
In spite of this great news reached Robert at the begining of December. The son Roberts eldest son Abelard and Dorothe von Franken, had, thanks to semi salic sucession, become King of Burgundy and Italy and wiched to ally with his grandfathers realm.
In April, with support of papal troops the crusades aim was reached and
Jerusalem liberated.
In France the war draged on with mixed sucess. While the Dutchy of Hainaunt still scored victories over the kings men, the bigger Dutchy of Bourgone had suffered several defeats and the Duke had to give his Duke title to the King.

It was in this situation that the Kings great stress transformed into madness.

Terrible times for the King. All he wants to do is die, but clearly people think that would be far too easy. Prolonged defeat and humiliation would appear to be the order of the day.

Yea verily I say unto thee, King Robert, buck up and keep the faith, Your Majesty, it's always darkest before the end... or something like that.

Crush this insignificant rebellion (even if it isn't insignificant play if off as if it were, it'll make the rebels mad as hell and do stupid things! :D ), and enjoy the sounds of the lamentations of their women as reap your revenge!
