A letter arrives in Crete from Queen Adalia of Portugal:

”My friends and allies, I greet you in the name of Portugal and wish you felicitations and good health. I am happy to hear of your conference and express my support for the policies our Confederation has pursued thus far and my utmost confidence in Queen Elinor and Doge Francesco Foscari. Their leadership has been exemplary thus far. I regret my not being able to be with you on that ancient island, as affairs of state keep me here. Yet Portugal wants to add its hope that France will soon join the Minoan Confederation and together, we shall form a powerful bloc for the protection and assertion of our interests.”

A party arrives from England, it is a large retinue of well dressed men. They carry something wrapped in a large blue cloth, emblazoned with the Fleur de Lis. The first amongst them, is recognizable as none other than the mighty John, Seventh Lord Talbot, Marshall et France. He speaks in his usually boisterous tone.

"I come on behalf of his majesty John III, word reaches us that his majesty Louis is not here at court, but we pray that his return is emminent. King John has arranged for a grand ceremony to take place in Paris in three weeks time [Tuesday] for the ceding of Paris back to its rightful crown, that of his most august majesty Louis. This is of course in accordance with the treaty signed before the now finished conquest of Normandy, which I John, Seventh Lord Talbot, Marshall et France had led. We have a gift for his majesty, and have been ordered to await his return, and then escort him along with any from this realm to Paris, where his majesty John shall receive them."

A message arrives by a servant to the hands of the King of France:

"To the Leaders of Europe:

This is a letter of Alxud, Khan of the Uzbeks. I ask you to read what I would like to express in this letter: I heared in my court, far away in Tashkent, that you are in a meeting with many leaders of Europe. I have completed a city called Yumhur, and I am searching trading partners to become part of a great project to make it safer and faster the silk road through the Caspian sea. This will provide cheaper and easier access to the products that Venice is already selling.

I have sent an expedition to Europe to speak with different leaders of the Christian continent. It consists of many members, including a christian European man called Alexandros Paleologus. Since he represents the Uzbek people, as well as the other members of the expedition, I ask you to take the oportunity that many of you are together and hear them out in the meetings held in the island of Crete.

Thankyou for your understanding, may God bless our souls, and our future and hopefully friendly relationship.

-Sincerily, Alxud Khan of the Uzbeks."

The chancellor, Jacquis-Phillipe Auvern, Duc d Vendee, was sitting in his chamber reading some letters, when it knocked on the door.

”I am sorry my lord, but a part of Englishmen have arrived. Their leader introducing him self as John, Seventh Lord Talbot, Marshall et France, and he said he had an important message, so I went to get you, my lord.”

“I thank you. I will be there at once.”

He rushes out and passes the servant in the hallway, walking very quickly he soon gets to the door to the main hall, then he slows down, and enters.

“I am Jacquis-Phillipe Auvern, Duc d Vendee the chancellor, and I welcome you all to Grenoble. I hear you have an important message?”

Listening to the Englishman speak, he gets more and more happy as the time goes on.

“This is wonderfull news. His Majesty had all faith in Your Majesty, and that Your Majesty would hold his part of the treaty. As you might know His Majesty is currently at Crete in talkes with the Queen of Castile-Leon and the Doge of Veince, but I am sure he will return to France as soon as he gets the wonderfull news. I will at once send message to His Majesty about your arrival and the ceremony for the return of Paris.”

He takes a paper and writes a fast message on it. Then he seals the letter, and gives it to a messenger.

“Now ride to the nearest harbour and there you will sail for Crete. Tell His Majesty it is important news!”

The messenger runs out, and the chancellor turns back to the Englishmen.

“Well gentlemen this was indeed wonderfull news. Would you like to be our guests for dinner while we wait for the Kings return?”

Talbot and the entorage waited patiently while the servants ran off to fetch the chancellor. They talked quietly amongst themselves and looked around the ornately decorated halls of the castle at Grenoble. It was a stark contrast to the spartan decoration of the castle in Windsor under Stafford. Eventually the Chancellor entered and addressed them. Talbot smiled and answered,

"Ahh yes some good food would settle us quite well, and after that if you could lodge us it would be most appreciated...if not a recommendation of a fine inn. We shall have to wait her until the King arrives and it should be some time. Until then though we shall present his majesty's gift unto you so that it may be stored with your king's valuables." Saying that Talbot stepped forward and unfurled the royal blue cloth, the fleur de lis hanging on it towards the floor. Inside was a delicate sword. The blade was quite thin and the metal luminescent. It appeared that it had been incredibly difficult to craft, and even more impressive was the latin script etched into the sword it translated to "King of France for 1000 years". The fine blade led down unto a glorious hilt the pommel crafted in a thin gold which shined brilliantly and was inlaid with sapphires, symbolic of the colors of France. The handle itself was bound in a good strong leather with jewels inlaid in the seams. At the very end of the handle a large ruby was set in the finest gold its glimmer could be seen in the faint light that entered the hall. Talbot presented the blade on the cloth to the Chancellor,

"With his majesty's regards good sir."

The chancellor looked stunned at the gift. It was the most impressing sword he had ever seen, and he stood there just looking at the sword for several minuets. Then he at last managed to speak.

“Ahm. That is indeed the most impressing, beautiful and excellent sword I have ever seen. In the name of His Majesty I gratefully accept this sword, and I thank Your Majesty and you for this great gift. I am sure His Majesty will be trilled when seeing the noble and great gift you have presented him with.

Bow if you would like to come this way, so let us eat. If you would like to rest a little first after the long journey these servants will lead you to your chambers here in the castle. You will all of course stay here as guests of France. The chef has been told to prepare the best he can, and we have just got in some of the Duke of Grenoble’s finest wine, so let us drink and eat. After what I have heard from the Duke, this is his maybe best wine for several years, and he told me that your Lord Treasurer, Henry Kendale, told the Duke that the wine was very fine, and very good. So I hope you will like it as well.”

Talbot laughed inwardly as the Chancellor admired the sword, jaw dropped. It was indeed a fine piece and Talbot eyed it in the man's hands before he spoke.

"Yes it is a masterpiece, I personally do not even know how it was came upon, but I presume it is Spanish in origin...from John II's reign." He paused then for a second and hearing of a meal he chimed in, "Ahh we should like only to see our quarters to clean up and change out of our travelling clothes, though we are famished and would love a meal, though do not put yourselves out on our account." When he heard of Kendale a light seemed to go on in the marshall's head and he spoke excitedly, "Ahh yes, the treasurer is still here in France...I presume he will be going to Paris soon, and then finally back to England. And I am certain any wine which Lord Kendale attests for is more than great for my unsophisticated palate. Your hospitality is immense Lord, but we shall off to our chambers now...I look forward to your company at dinner."

With that the retinue was off following a group of servants to their chambers.

A group of riders enters the court yard at Grenoble, and servants rush out to fetch the horses. Seeing that the first rider is His Majesty King Louis XI of France, the servants bows down, while the King rush inside. Here he walks right into the dinner and smiles at the group of men. The chancellor rises, and bows.

"Your Majesty!
What a pleasure to see you again. This is the English chancellor of France and his men, and this is a gift for you from the king of England."

He takes forward the sword and gives it to Louis. Louis looks at the sword and nods.

"Noble Lord Talbot, gentlemen. What a pleasure it is to see you all sit here eating as friends. Peace is really great, don't you think? Hehehe
Well this was a great gift and I am very honoured by it. I must remeber to thank your noble King when I see him.
So when are we going to Paris? As you see I have traveled far already, but for this I am ready to travel even further as soon as you want, but first I think we should finish this dinner. It looks really great!"

Louis gave them all a smile and sat down to take some food.

The noble contingent from England rose as King Louis entered the room, and bowed in acknowledgment to his majesty. Talbot then spoke in answer to the King,

"It pleases me and shall please his majesty immensely that you deign his gift with your favor, and yes peace truly is blessed and we all hope that it can last forever." As the King sat down so did everyone else as they waited for food to be served for Louis before they began eating again.

"If it pleases your majesty we would leave first thing tomorrow morning. King John should be in Paris presently."

In the Bay of Biscay

island.jpg

A small French trading vessel, the “Fougueux”, was making her way towards the French harbour of Vendee. She is returning from a trip to Gelre where they had taken over goods from the hanseatic ships, coming from Pskov. The deal with the grand princess had said that to trick the Danes so that French ships wouldn’t have to pay the Sund due, hanseatic ships would transport the goods from Pskov to Gelre passing the Sund, and French ships would get it there.

Now she was pretty heavy loaded with timber and fur, and the captain Dominic Loiters was very happy. With this load he would surly have secured a nice little income for him self for at least some years a head. Also he was not planning to stop now, this spring had just arrived and they would have several good months to sail before the storms come back in the autumn.

Dominic stood on the deck with his son, Michel 15 years of age, together with him, looking towards the coast. It was a beautiful day, the sun was shining and it was a light breeze so the ship sails with good speed.

“Now son if this wind continues we will be back in Vendee tomorrow. Ah it is a good life, and with this load we will earn a lot of money, so when we come home we will have a party.”

“Yes dad, that sounds very nice!”

“Now listen in there you can see the coast of Brittany. A fine Duchy that have been friendly and close co-operator of France for many years. That is the coast of Bretagne you can see there, and a little further down the coast we will see the coast of France, of Vendee. And out there to the west, you see those islands?”

“Yes, there is a lot of islands there dad, are they under the Duchy of Brittany, or the crown of France dad?”

“Neither boy. The islands you see there are the Channel Islands, belonging to the crown of England. The used to belong to the Duke of Normandy, but now they are directly under the crown of England. So they are actually friendly territory as well, so we should nothing to fear.
Now do you remember what I told you?”

“Yes, dad. To the east we see the Duchy of Brittany, and to the west the Channel Islands, under the King of England.”

“That is correct. Now shall we go and get something to…”

“Deck ahoy!
Ship ahead!”

“Seems like we will have to wait a little Michel.
What monsieur Pallers, what do you see?”

”It seems to be a small fast going vessel monsieur Captain. They are not showing any colours!”

“Hmm very well, monsieur Deupart, show them our colours. Up with the flag of France!”

“Aye, aye, sir.”

Deupart walked slowly towards the flag and started to get it ready, and up it went. He had worked on merchant vessels for as long as he could remember, and the captains had always been slow to take decisions, and it was always a pretty lazy life to work onboard a merchant vessel. But with this new captain, Dominic, had introduced a new standard where thing should go quicker, and under much more discipline and rules. Deupart was not too happy about that, but the new captain had already showed him self as a very good sailor, and Deupart respected that, so he did his best. So up the colours went.

“Now monsieur Pallers what do you see now?”

”Hmm still no colours sir, but they have altered curse, and are coming right against us.
Hey, wait a second!
If you ask me I would say he look pretty overloaded, sir.”

“Oh what do you mean?”

”Well sir. As you know we are holding a good speed with not that much sails up, but they are keeping a pretty slow speed with all their sails set. Also they are very low in the water. Seems very strange, you should probably be able to see her from deck soon, sir.”

“Yes, quite correct. I see her, and she is actually pretty low in the water.
Monsieur Bepaourt hard over. We will try to get away from this.”

AS they change course to sail further out in the see, and closer to the Channel Islands, instead of sailing so close to the coast of Brittany as they have been, Dominic see that the other ships is also altering course.

“Damn, damn. He is still coming down towards us. Deupart take forward the swords. The crew will arm them self.”

“Sir? Arms?”

“Yes, Deupart. I fear that this might be a pirate ship. Just look at them, overloaded, probably with men and weapons, maybe even prisoners from other ships they have taken, also they way the react to us. They sail down towards us, and when we alter course, they do the same as to cut us off.
But I still think we can sail away from them, as monsieur Pallers said they are much slower than us. So take forward the arms.
We will show them!”

“We will sail right at him, and then we will make a fast turn in towards the coast again, and pass him before he ill get a change to turn. Steady now, keep the course!”

They where coming closer and closer, and now he could even see people on the deck. As he had though she was overloaded with men, but why should they care. They only went out from the coast nearby when it was nice weather.
Every moment they where getting closer. Then suddenly an arrow flow from the other ship, and more arrows follow after. Most of them were hit only the water, but some of them hit the ship. A cry comes from the pirate ship.

“Surrender!
You pansies have no change against us. We outnumber you. Surrender!”

“NOW
ALL HANDS! ALL HANDS TO RISE SAIL!”

As the small crew runs up from below, and climbs up to the sails. Dominic stands on the deck looking over at the other ship. The same moment as they set more sail, Dominic feels that the little vessel is gaining speed.

“HARD OVER!”

The small ship gains speed extremely quickly and starts coming around. From the pirate ship they can hear yelling, and people swearing. Then a new group of arrows is sent towards the small ship, but it is a little too late. They had gained speed so quickly that now they had turned around and had changed course from south to west. The small vessel gained speed quicker and quicker, and as Dominic turned backwards he could see that the pirate ship was still trying to turn around. In front of them the coast of Brittany was coming closer and closer.

“HALL HANDS! WE SHALL TURN AGAIN!”

As the pirate ship had almost finished their first turn, the little merchant ship started the second turn, which would lead them back on a curse south wards.

“We are coming around, we are coming around, and they have just managed to turn once. Hurray for the captain lads!

HURRAY!!

They now had their tail turned towards the pirate ship, and they where gaining speed every minute. The pirates had not bothered to even try to catch up with them, and they could see that they pirate ship had changed course towards the coast to look for another ship to pillage.

“When we get to Vendee. I think the harbour admiral will be very interested to hear about this!”

Dominic smiles at his crew, and they all start to laugh.

“Well where was I, yes now let us go down to eat breakfast. We will be in Vendee before tomorrow!”

The court of the King of France is reknowned as a center of culture. As René d'Anjou, Chloe, the mother of the Emperor of the Romans, and John, René's son, entered the court, they found a philosopher lecturing to the court and the King of France. Respectfully, the three took seats, and listened to the philosopher finish his discourse. When he ended, the court all wandered off for a break.

When they came back, Duke René stepped before the King, and bowed.

"King Louis, I have made the journey from Provence to renew the alliance between us. We have shed much blood, against the Burgundians, against the English, and against many others, and our bond is as brothers. I wish to renew my oath of vassalage to your Crown. I also wish for you, the King of France, to recognize my claims and the claims of House Capet-Anjou to the Duchy of Anjou, the Duchy of Lorraine, the Duchy of Bar, and the County of Provence.

There are some things that I wish to discuss with you privately, your Majesty.."

The court of King Louis was listening to some musicians in the background, and they were all talking amongst themselves. Then suddenly, a messenger entered the room, and came up to Duke René and King Louis.

"King Louis, Duke René, I have excellent news!"

Duke René turned and faced this messenger.

"What is it, my good man?"

"The King of Aragon has accepted your proposal, and has recognized your claim upon the Crown of Naples. Your path to the throne is clear, King René.."

René smiled.

"Splinded! PIERRE!" He shouted to his aide, "Bring several cases of the finest Provencal wine up! We must celebrate.. celebrate the triumph of the Capetians!"

The revelry went on throughout the night. It was always a good thing when someone became a King.

The chancellor of France, the Duc de Vendee turned to the men from Provence after listening to them speak.

“I am sorry noble Duke, but I am not His Majesty. I have been told several times, that I have the great honour of being very similar to His Noble Majesty, but I am not His Majesty. I am the chancellor of France, Jacquis-Phillipe Auvern, Duc d Vendee, and I am pleases to welcome you to Grenoble. For to long the lands of your Duchy has been silent and I am sure that His Majesty will be trilled by this news when I inform him about it.

His Majesty him self is currently in Paris to meet the King of England, but I act as regent and all business you want to discuss with His Majesty can be discussed with me.

It seems like you want to make sure you claims are supported, and I will at once write to the King about this. Now this wait please and we can talk private.”

A little later they return. The chancellor sits down to write two letters to His Majesty, and then he waves for a man dressed in dark robes, but when his robe glides back you can see rich and expensive clothes showing that is was a noble.

“To His Majesty at once, and you can also inform him of the other business we talked about.”

The chancellor gives him the first letter, and then leans closer to whisper something to the man before giving the man the second letter.

“Remember for His Majesty only!”

“Of course Your Excellency!”

The man runs out, just in the same moment as the messenger runs in with news from Aragon.

“I am sorry, but I most once again point out that I am not His Majesty, but still I do not fully understand this. Duke René would you be so kind as to inform me more closely?”

castle2.jpg

Louis was sitting in a small castle in the border village to Ile de France and England. He was awaiting the arrival of the king of England, and the ceremony for the return of Ile de France with the city of Paris, as it’s most important part. He had waited for this moment for several years, so he though to him self that he might as well wait a little more until the King of England arrives. No needs for doing something stupid like rushing in and taking over the city now. No he would wait for the King to return the city as they had agreed.

Louis was looking out over the little village just down the hill, and there the borderline went with the guards and the garrison, while drinking some wine. Louis lifted his glass, held it high and said cheers while looking towards Paris.

“Cheers Paris. We will soon see each other again, I hope!”

Louis smiled, and then started to laugh. He most be getting mad, here he was sitting and drinking with a city. But on the other side, this was the city that had been in his dreams and thoughts for so many years, and now the day would soon arrive where it would once again be in the hands of France. Louis finished the glass, and grabbed after the bottle when a knock on the door made him turn around, and let the bottle stand untouched on the table.

“Enter!”

”Your Majesty. A letter has arrived from the Duc d Vendee. Also the messenger wanted to see you, Your Majesty. Said he had something very important to inform you off.”

Louis took the letter and nodded.

“Very well, send him in then.”

While waiting Louis breaks the seal on the letter and starts to read.
So the Duchy of Provence had return back to life again, after many years where it had been closed due to illness, and internal affairs. This was good new indeed.

“What? The Duke claims what?”

Louis looked stunned up for a moment and then reads the last paragraph again more closely, and slower this time.

“By God!”

“Ahm, Your Majesty?”

“Oh I am sorry. Monsieur enter please. You had something important to speak to me about?”

Louis looked close at the messenger, and then he saw it was no normal messenger. The man closed the door.

“Your Majesty.
As you might have seen I am the Comte de Brissac.”

“Yes, I though it was you Louis Mathieu. I guess it most be important news when you are sent as messenger.”

“Yes, Your Majesty pressing and important news indeed. But first something nice, we have received rumours from Burgundy that the country had once again opened up to the other world, and it seems like the have got some control over the internal problems.
The Duc de Vendee wanted me to return there to act as ambassador if it was to Your Majesty’s liking?”

“Yes, I agree with the Duc, I think you will do a splendid job as you have done before. But I guess this was not the reason for you to come here.”

“No Your Majesty. This letter is from the Duc personally and it contains information about his talks in private with the Duc of Provence. The Duc has informed me about some of the contents in case any events should happened that made it necessary for the paper to be destroyed, I hope that is to Your Majesty’s liking and acceptance.”

“Yes, that was very smart of the Duc. We both know that you are a man that can be trusted my dear Comte! Now let me see.”

Louis opens the other letter as well. This letter is not sealed with the seal of the chancellor, but it is only a small red mark on the paper, as to make it look of no importance in case any thing should have happened on the road.
Louis starts to read, then he puts the letter down on the table and look on the Comte.

“My friend. This was important news, indeed. I will have to think a little about it, but you will at once leave for Dijon. Bring my deepest greetings to the Queen and the regent, and let us pray that the Queen will get better from this assault that happened some months ago. And remember France and Burgundy have been close and good friends for several years, and I you are to offer all of France’s aid and help in the search for the assaulters, and in any other case the Queen or the regent should find it useable.

Well you probably already knew all this. Hehehe. Well of you go then.”

The Comte bows deep for the King and walks out the door to leave for Burgundy. Meanwhile Louis sits down at the window again, looks towards Paris, grabs the bottle and fills his glass. Then he lifts the glass, and takes a sip, before once again taking forward the letters from the Duc, and slowly reading them one more time.

A letter arrives in Paris, from the Duc d'Anjou.

"Your Majesty, Roi du France Louis,

I, your loyal ally, have excellent news to report. The King of Aragon has dropped his claims upon the Crown of Naples, leaving the way for the true heir, myself, to come to the throne. The Neapolitan army is weak, and I hear the Viceroy is now a sickly man, who has not been well in weeks. The time is now right, my friend, to strike quickly, and to seize the rightful inheritance of House Capet-Anjou. I ask, under the old privileges granted to nobles under the French crown, for the Royal Armies to march on Naples with me. My own army is preparing to invade, and although the army here is stout, it is few in number. In exchange for your aid in my quest, I am sure that France shall benefit greatly..

In God's Name,

-Renatus Angevinus, Duc d’Anjou, Duc de Calabria, Comte de Provençe, Comte de Bar, Comte de Guise, Roi d’Hongrie et de Naples, Roi d’Aragonie, de Valençe, de Mallorce et de Sardinie, Roi d’Hyerusalaim

A party is spotting riding towards Paris, or rather a small village near Paris, where the King of France has rested for some time. Naturally, the King's attentive guardians fear that something is amiss, but as the riders approach, they see the arms of the houses of Berri and Bourbon, as well as the Directoire of Lotharingia, all of whom are well known for standing by the crown of France and the House of Valois. They are, after a brief examination, allowed to deliver their visitor to the King.

The man bows low before young Louis, and at a brief nod from the King, returns to his feet. He is something of a tall man, healthy into his early 40s, although he is certainly well rounded. However, his most outstanding feature is his incredibly loud mode of dress, which although it uses an overlayer of good, utilitarian black, the outside has been deliberate slashed around the sleeves and chest, and brightly colored silks from the East show through. Of course, he is well known as a cousin of the King, and how many people really dress that way? It is Louis de Berri, Count of Montpensier, the son of Marie de Berri and the Duke of Bourbon, and one of the most powerful nobles in Lotharingia, as well as the current heir apparant to the throne.

"Greetings, Your Majesty. I have come to visit my beloved and most noble cousin, in the hopes that not only might we become friends, but that the Kingdom of Lotharingia, and the Kingdom of France, being 2/3rds of the great Empire of our mutual ancestor, Charles the Great might perhaps work together for mutual benefit. Also, I am here as the leader of a great faction in Burgundy, one who supports the sovereignty of the King of France over French lands."

Charles awaits the answer of the King.

Louis was just about to leave the small castle in the village on the border, when it was announced that a group of riders approached. It could not be the English for the English guards had left days ago, and now this small village where no longer on the boarder, but inside France, to the north was the province of Ile de France and the city of Paris. No longer a part of England, but at last returned to France.

“Well I guess we can wait a couple of minuets more before riding into Paris, and see what this men want.”

A little later Louis welcomes the men from Burgundy.

“Welcome cousin.
It is good to see you again. I hope your journey here from Burgundy was a pleasant one?
Maybe you are thirsty; will you do me the honour of tasting this great wine? As you might see you caught me just as we where about to set of for Paris, at last the jewel of Gaul has been returned to France. What a wonderful day it was, when the English turned it over. I hope you will be willing to come with me to Paris, to see the city of our forefathers again?

I am very glad to hear that Burgundy is still interested in mutual benefit. For many years now Burgundy and France have been great friends, and co-operators, and we have great wishes for the continuing of this.

You say you have also arrived as the leader of a great faction in Burgundy, supporting the sovereignty of France over French lands. This makes me pleased and interested? Would you please enlighten me more about this faction and their views?”

Louis sits down and gets a glass of wine, and drinks a little while waiting to get an answer.

After gathering an army of bored knights, lords, and other assorted nobles from all France, King René smiles to the assembled nobility in the French court, where he had become THE man of honor of later.

"Ladies and Gentlemen! My task is half complete! The Armee du Provence is ready, and now, I must depart! I bid you farewell, and hopefully, I shall return.. as the Crowned King of Naples!"

As King René took a final bow, the cheers from the French court were music to his ears.. this old style Chivalry thing was not so bad after all..

That night, on the road to Aix

"Well, how many did we get?"

"It is not so good, King René. The French nobility now listens to the King of France.. mostly. We did get many nobles from the south of France interested in our venture, but I fear we may have to depend on Italian mercenaries. There is.. something else. Our man did speak to the Regent of Lotharingia, and she is very interested in sending Burgundian nobility. There are also the Gasco.."

King René shot a look at his advisor.

"Er. Perhaps not the Gascons. There are the Britons, as well, and the English, should we need them. Perhaps the King of Aragon might be interested as well?"

King René nodded thoughtfully.

"Perhaps, perhaps. I shall write to them all when we get home. Oh, the army. Is it ready?"

"The nobility of Provence are ready, King René."

"And the men from Anjou?"

"They shall be arriving within the week."

"Excellent! Let us drink to our success! But not much, eh? We have a long day ahead of us."

"Indeed."

Louis studies the his royal cousin as he savors the fine wine of the Valois. Although he is still relatively young, he is a man now, and there is a strength in him, perhaps one that could bring back the France of their common ancestor, Philippe IV.

"Your Majesty, I am most gratified to see the Île-de-France back under the rightful rule of the House of Valois, and I hope to visit the great city soon. The city where our ancestor, Philippe of Valois, stood in defiance of the unlawful claim to the throne, and through great perseverence, held onto lands and strength for his heirs, knowing that in time, justice would settle things as God intended."

"As for my supporters in Lotharingia, well let's say that many of us remember the oaths taken to your father and his father. Although we are sworn above all else loyalty to the Crown of Lothair, we remember our commitment to defend France as well. Was it not after the death of Charlemagne that Christendom was divided into three? While two of those thrones have prospered as of late, the third has been beset by plagues of locusts, envious of the glory of France. Thus, we have sworn ourselves to rebuilding the France of old, whose wealth and strength was unrivaled."

Louis leans towards his cousin. "With all due respect, Your Majesty, the Queen Éléanore has been beset with terrible sickness, ever since a blackguard's arrow felled her at her coronation. Every day we have with her is a gift from God, but her time may be short. She is still an unmarried girl, and were she to fall ill and die, the Crown of Lothair would fall onto my House. In such a case, I will be in a position to provide a great deal of aid indeed, and cement the rule of a King over Lotharingia, as opposed to the weak, squabbling Directoire that now control affairs. My proposal is that the affairs of France and the affairs of Lotharingia be one. That a league of the two Western Kings unite, and set right the wrongs of years past. What does your Majesty think about such a thing?"
