Louis took the treaty from the man from Brittany and look at it.

“Well I think as a first draft it looks good. But we have just changed a little bit on it. What do you think?”

Proposal to treaty between France and Brittany by Francois I de Yvernes.

Louis XII, king of France. As you know, our friend Luke VII de Montfort died due a conspiracy against him, I have been chosen to be the new duke after him and here are my proposals for a treaty between France and Brittany:

I. Goods shall be traded once in a month between the noble cities Paris in France and Nantes in Brittany. .

II. Merchants from Brittany shall be treated as inhabitants of France while there, and shall pay no other taxes that local merchants do.

III. Merchants of France be treated as inhabitants of Brittany while there, and shall pay no other taxes than local merchants do.

IV. Should any nation attack Brittany or France, the other country should immediately come to its help.

V. In case of any of the signing nations entering a conflict the other country shall look in favour for requests for monetary aid.

[ ]- Francois I de Yvernes, Duke of Brittany

[X]-Louis XI, King of France, Head of the House of Valois, Overlord and Protector of Provence.

Henry enjoyed the warm spring air as it brushed his face and blew his hair behind him as they approached the Duke's castle. It was indeed a beautiful place, well maintained in all regards, even the trees and flowers manicured perfectly. Finally they came to a stop as they approached closer and Henry could see the flags waving gently on the fort's parapets. Henry smiled briefly at the Duke and nodded,

"Beautiful indeed, it is like a paradise, this weather is such a great break from home, where I can gauruntee you it is rainging right now." Henry pointed north towards England and laughed, envisioning a mud soaked London under the fog and rain of spring. They then continued on more slowly towards the castle as the servants began to catch up behind them and Henry breathed the air in deep.

"So that wine can not be far away I bet" He said with a beaming smile to the duke, the treasurer of England was truly enjoying his little vacation.

The Duke laughs at the Englishman’s question.

“No, you are absolutely right. The wine is indeed not far away. And I promise you it is right there in my wine cellar.”

He pointed on a door on the side of the main building coming into view just as they rode thru the main gate. The guards saluted, and the Duke greeted them back. Then the entered the courtyard. Phillipe stops his horse and two servants rushed forward to hold the horses for them as they dismount. A man dressed in fine clothes, some of the newest from Paris, walks towards them, smiling.

“Welcome home, Your Grace. Welcome to the estate, you must be monsieur Kendale I presume?
I am Sir Robert d Carteret, an old friend of His Grace and his estate manager.”

Robert smiled, the he continued.

“Well at first I was hoping to go with the Duke to the Duchy of Burgundy, but then he said that he needed a good man to take care of everything back in France, so here I am. I think you will find everything almost as you left it Phillipe.”

“I am sure of it Robert, old friend it is good to see you again.
But where are my manners, I have forgot to introduce you two, although I think you both got an idea by now, he he he. Well anyway. Henry Kendale, treasurer of England, Sir Robert d Cartert, my good friend and treasurer, at least he has been that for some years now.”

“I am pleased to meet you monsieur Kendale, and Phillipe it is good to have you back.
Now I was told in the letter that you are found of wine monsieur Kendale, so I prepared some of the estate’s finest for you in the main hall.

This way please!”

He leads the way into the building, and inside the hall there is indeed wine standing ready for them.

“I guess you are both two thirsty?”

Robert asked smiling.

They came through the gates and were welcomed by all and the monsieur d Carteret, who seemed like a friendly enough fellow Henry thought. As he dismounted he shook hands with the Duke's friend and addressed him happily,

"The pleasure is all mine monsieur, you do well to keep this place so beautiful," He turned to the Duke and nodded, "Your grace is lucky to have so capable a man at his disposal." Niceties exchanged they began their walk towards the great hall and Henry's mouth was salivating. He could not get over his great luck, what was to be a business trip to Burgundy turned into a vacation of his two favorite things in life, riding and wine. He had his fill of riding for the day and as they entered the great hall and he saw the table prepared with many bottles of wine he knew he would have his fill of wine as well. His eyes loomed large over the table as he turned to his two hosts,

"So, what have we here, and what do you recommend to start?" He was smiling and rocking back and forth on his heels, anxious to enjoy some fine french wine.

Paraciou looked amazed at the French King, stunned by his belligerence and lacking acquiescence.

"With all the respect your Majesty, I thought you did believe me when I announced myself as one of Modena's ambassadors, and that this scrutiny is highly inappropriate and unnecessary. This very man who addresses himself as Foreign Minster, may God forbid, is nothing but a mere imbecile and a ridiculous liar. I see no other reason for his hideous atrocity than that he was eager to make a profit himself. All such fools are in the end apprehended and prosecuted, which is what I do hope eventually will happen to this very man.
For my own sake, I have nothing to say to my defence, on the contrary, I have done nothing critique-worthy or silly, other than acquainting your Majesty about the grave enterprise of this person. But if your Majesty does want to proceed with the prosecution against me, I do know I shall be acquitted and finally emerge satisfactory.
Let us all hope this has just been another silly misunderstanding..."

De Varana had used the time to moisten his throat and interrupted the honourable gentleman Paracious in the middle of his speech.

"I do not know what on earth you are talking about my dear Paraciou, silly..."

"Be quiet, you seem not to understand what great peril you have attracted, but let us now leave this matter to his Majesty the King of Francet to decide.

Sergio Mercato speaks with the King.
  • "Your lordship, I have very good news for your eminence. Currently the Doge of Venezia, and the King and Queen of Castille-Leon have met on the island of Crete. I have been sent to see if you would wish to join the confederation which at this very moment they are discussing.

France has truly proven to be the closest friend of Venezia and we wish to advance our union for the good of all of Europe. I hope that you will seriously consider the benefits that your people would gain in trade, power, influence, and glory. I hope that you will go to Crete and speak personally with the fore-mentioned leaders to discuss such issues for my Doge has long wished to see your majesty.

I would like to also mention that the Doge truly holds you in great esteem, and that this offer can only be made to few nations that are truly worthy, that have proven to be of good heart, mind, and spirit. Your loyalty to Venezia has been something of legend, and something that we seek to repay in anyway we possibly can. I hope that now in the summer months your honor is willing to take a rest on the island that we have just recently conquered together. As always your highness I hope for greatest glory and health."

    The man bows

The King looks over the treaty once more.

"This looks very good. I am very glad that our two noble states once again has managed to agree on a treaty that will ensure peace and good co-operation between our two nations. "

Louis takes the treaty and signs.

Treaty of trade and friendship between Brittany and France

[X]- Francois I de Yvernes, Duke of Brittany

[X]-Louis XI, King of France, Head of the House of Valois, Overlord and Protector of Provence.

After signing the treaty, Louis listens to the two men from Modena as they talk to him.

"Hmm gentlemen.
It looks to me like we have a bad situation here. You are both claiming to be the official envoy from Modena, but listening to you speak I must say that I found that you, monsieur Paraciou, are the one who sounds the most true and reasonable. You speak with the voice of a diplomat, while your "college" here speak as a man who has been caught trying to commit a crime.

You monsieur De Varana seems like you aren’t able to speak like a true man, and that you no way are able to express yourself, and I must say that I find your arguments very silly!

Guards let monsieur Paraciou go.

I excuse our actions monsieur Paraciou, but I had to be sure, and I couldn't risk letting any of you getting away since one of you where obviously a liar.

So what do you think we should do with this liar?"

While waiting for the man to answer the ambassador from Venice suddenly enter with his message, and just after him the ambassador from Castile.

“Ah my dear monsieur Mercato, it is good to see such a noble friend of France once again in these halls.

We are honour to be considered as great friends of Venice, for we look upon your noble nation as a great friend and alley of France as well¨. Therefore we are also very glad and honoured for this great offer coming from such a friend like Venice.”

Louis listens to the ambassador from Castile after he has finished answering Sergio Mercato.

“I am glad to hear that my noble aunt in Castile also would like me to be a part of your strong and glorious Confederation. I am very interested in hearing more about his, and also to see a copy of the Confederation Treaty is if is possible.”

He looks at both the two men, and smiles.

“So to get to know more should I go to Crete to meet the Queen and the Doge, or would we be able to handle this from here.
The reason why I am asking is that I have been getting rumours from the north of a great battle between the Normans and the English. I am very found of my country and therefore I like to know what goes on in my neighbouring countries, and at the moment I am trying to get to know more about what happens to the north, so I would like to look into that, also our great Treaty with the noble Kingdom of England states that after the Kingdom of England has made peace with Normandy, which seems like it will happen soon, England is to return the city of Paris back to France. When this happens I want to, and I will have to be present.

But as I said I am willing to go to Crete, I just need to know if your Queen, and your Doge want me to go, or if we can do it from here. I will also try to look into this matter with England even more to see what is happening.”

D Carteret smiled.

“I thank you, I am only trying to do my best. And I really hope that you will also think that everything is as beautiful as you seem them now, after you have stayed here for a while. I can ensure you we will do our best!”

Phillipe looked proved as Henry expressed his views, and then after listening to d Carteret’s answer he nodded.

“Yes, I totally agree Robert, you have done a beautiful job here while I have been gone.
As you said monsieur Kendale he is indeed a very capable and great man.”

They stood in the great hall, and Philippe could see on the Englishman that this was something Henry liked and was found off.

“Well what do you say Robert?
I think the estates own wine from 1436. This is a mild and good red wine, and the wine from 36 is some of the best we have produced for years.”

“Yes, I couldn’t agree more your Grace, that is some of our finest, but I think you will really like the 1439 wine as well, it is also a great year. But I agree let us start with the 36.”

Robert took forward the bottle, and poured wine in three glasses. Two servants came forward and took the glasses, and gave them to Philippe and Henry.
Philippe raised his glass.

“Gentlemen!
First of all welcome to my home. It is very good be back again. Then I am very glad that you have run the estates so smoothly Robert, all honour to you for that!
So drink up we have a lot of wine to drink. He he he

A toast!
For the King of England and the King of France, me they rule for many years, and may their reign be a prosperous one.

God save the Kings!”

He lifted his glass and drank.

Sergio Mercato speaks with the King once again.
  • "Your eminence, I must say that if Paris is vital then attend to it, but I think that it is possible to do both, deal with Paris and travel to Crete. Regardless Venezia and especially the Doge are begging to see the hero of France that we so owe our allegiance to. It is rare that we meeet such noble men in the world as yourself. I hope that you take my advice and head to Crete to meet your friends."

    The man bows.

The King smiles at the man from Venice.

"My dear Sergio Mercato
That sounds like a great idea. I will leave at once. You can tell your noble Doge that the King of France will arrive in Crete as soon as the ships can travel there."

Louis walks out of the court room, and just some time later the King leaves Grenoble with several members of the court riding towars the French Naval Base in Vendee.

Henry Kendale wafted the wine into his nose as the glass was handed to him. A smile coming to his eager face as he did,

"Ahh, quite a good vintage indeed." He listened to the Duke's toast intently, holding the glass out before him, desperate to taste it's belongings. He was almost salivating in anticipation of the wonderful wine.

"God Save the King's," He chimed in for the toast and took a draught with his companions, the smooth sweet flavor of the perfectly aged wine gracing his tastebuds. He took a second sip from the glass and swished it around in his mouth a bit before looking up at Carteret and the Duke happily,

"Mmmm...quite exquisite. You did not lie about the quality of vine here. I shall have to make note in London when I return to have the King request some of this for Windsor, that is if you are willing to export." He smiled at them and winked, "I would covet such a wine if it were mine own." Henry took yet another swig and the glass was empty, though almost instantly replaced with another by a nearby servant.

"My legs are weary men, perhap we shall sit down to enjoy more of this wine, some cheese, and then we are good and drunk, call this a night?" He laughed out loud as a servant motioned him towards a chair.

Phillipe and Robert looked at each other. This Englishman was obviously a man after their hart.

“I am very pleased that you like the wine monsieur Kendale. It makes me very proud. And I must say Robert you have been handling the wine great while I have been gone. This is absolutely superb.”

The Duke smiled, and empted his glass. Robert blushed for a second, then he look at the two men.

“I am also very glad you like the wine monsieur Kendale, and I am very happy that you are pleased with my work Philippe. I hoped you would be, so I have done my very best.”

Listening to Henry talk about his interest in importing the wine to England, Phillipe smiled even more.

“So it was that great? He he good!
If Your Noble King would be interested in requesting our product, we would be very honour to export it. I feel that it would be very honourably to export it even to such a noble and fine man as you monsieur Kendale. Therefore I would be proud and honoured if you would like to take some of the wine with you back to England, for your private use, as a gift from me.

Of course let us sit down. That was a splendid idea.
Servant brink in some cheese!
I take it the cheese is fresh Robert?”

“Yes, indeed it is Philippe. This cheese was made not very long ago, and has been resting at the storehouse from that day, so I believe it should be very fine now.”

“Splendid. I will, as always trust you, since I know you as a good food expert. Now let us sit down, and drink some more.
Hmm what is this the bottle is not empted yet? Come on my friends let us drink.”

The all laugh and Phillipe smiled. He took the bottle and filled up their glasses again, as the servants came in with the cheese.

Juilan Yvernes walked in to the court together with a man who was about an half meter over Juilan. Juilan spoke first.

"Most noble king Louis XI of France, as you know, my father, Francois de Yvernes, became the new duke after the murder of Luke VII de Montfort. Jacquis-Phillipe Auvern, Duc d Vendee, chancellor of France and leader of the council, turns around fast seeing that he is address as the King.

“I am sorry noble gentlemen, but as I guess you see now I am not the King. His Majesty is currently in Crete talking to the Doge of Venice and the Queen of Castile and Leon. But The King and I have always get to hear that we look very similar from behind, and since we both got the same kind of body build I can understand your misunderstanding.

But since His Majesty is not here, and the Queen is not here at the moment, I was actually the right man to address, but I am no King only a common duke.

I am sorry to see you leave monsieur Juilan Yvernes since I know that His Majesty have always though of you as a good envoy from your noble Duchy. However we understand your situation, and therefore we see that you have to leave. Please do bring His Majesties greetings and mine as well to your father.

In the name of King Louis XI of France I will accept monsieur Nico Jicklier as ambassador from the Duchy of Brittany to the Kingdom of France. Welcome, and I am sure the King will welcome you upon his return from Crete. As of now we have nothing we want you for, so this servant will follow you to your quarters.”

The Duke smiled, and pointed at a servant standing ready.

  • "You highness, sucha surprise. I shall send a messenger immediately to their majesties to tell of your arrival. They are on the hilltops there. They are examining the ruins of the Minoans to decide where to build the great hall that shall rule."

The Doge looking at the King for the first time thinks to himself, how frail the French truly are. With their wonderful cloths and pampered lifestyle, it almost amazed him how strong willed, an loyal a friend the Doge had. For once he has ound a friend in King Louis, one loyal, dedicated and willing to go to enormous extents to guarantee the success of both naitons. The cultural markers of the posh French meant next to nothing to him, while he thought of the bravery, and friendship that this man had provided. In a warm, large smile the Doge starts to speak.
"Ah my good friend it is so good to see you finally. I have often wondered how you would look, and it is good to finally meet. This iisland s for the current time under restoration for the most part, but I have already demanded that a set of villas refurnished, and rebuilt if need be for the pleasure of royal guests of Venezia. You are most welcome to enjoy the warm waters and climate of Crete during your stay. My ervants shall bid to your every whim.

I would like to introduce the King and Queen of Castille-Leon. They have been most patient and have long looked forward to seeing you.

As for business, I shall speak for the Minoan Confederacy if I may. We are looking for a new partner in this gerat endeavor of ours. We have hoped that you may join. The benefits are enormous. Improvements to trade, as well as honorable allieis ready to protect your state at the first sign of trouble. You know me as a man of honor, and I hope that you may take my advice and join us. With the four nations of France, Venezia, Castille-leon, and Portugal we would control all trade in western Europe. In addition No one will dare step against us. Our will is iron, and unmoveable. I would like to see the Germans attempt a movement against the Minoan Confederacy, all powerful and unstoppable. I think that our nation, and specificlly your eminence would make a perfect addition, magnify our ucrrent power, and bring a complete ora of invincibility. I hope this sounds favorable?"

The Doge trying to turn the King drunk with the idea of power, slightly retreats and bows lightly.
