Claims of Edmund York
engfrahoi.gif

The Crown of England
England has been engaged in a bloody civil war for several years. The premise of the war is legitimacy as rightful King. While much is disputed, there is one unquestionable fact: King Edward III had seven sons. Roger de Mortimer was the primary descendant of Lionel Plantagenet, the third son of Edward III. The childless King Richard II, son of Edward III's first son Edward ("the Black Prince") recognized Roger as his heir, as his uncle William, the second son of Edward III, died in his youth. The Yorkists are descended from Roger de Mortimer, and therefore from Lionel Plantagenet, and therefore hold claim to be the heirs of, at the very least, King Richard II. The Lancasters have no such claim, other than the fact that they are descended from John ("of Gaunt"), the fourth son of Edward III, and that the House of York itself takes its name and ducal title from Edmund, Duke of York, the fifth son of Edward III. However, Edmund and John of Gaunt aside, the Yorkists are legally the primary descendants of Lionel Plantagenet, to whom the Lancasters have no descent from, such as that is, the Yorkists are recognized by most of the nobility of England.

The Crown of France
In the year 1327, King Charles IV of France, the son of King Philippe IV, died without any children of his own. None of his brothers had survived to that point, and only his sister Isabelle had any children. She had married King Edward II of England, whose son, Edward III refused to swear fealty and pay tribute for his French holdings to King Philippe VI, who claimed descent from his father Charles, the Count of Valois, whose claim had to be traced far back to King Philippe III (died 1285). As Edward III refused to pay tribute, and had claimed France for himself, a war broke out between the two factions, despite Salic law being in effect for France, and therefore, many disagreed with Edward III's claim. Although, some French nobles chose to recognize it due to the ineptitude of early Valois kings. This war waged on, with many French losses and treaties which brought about brief peace, only to be continued once again years later. Paris, the capital of France fell to Plantagenet forces over 30 years ago, only recently to be given to the Valois as a token of friendship. England still maintains lands in France, and they still refuse to pay tribute to the Valois, so it can be argued that the Plantagenets have the upper hand in this war, although the Lancasters given up their claims, the Yorkists have not.

The Crowns of Castille and Leon
King Pedro I of Castille and Leon died in 1369. The Crown of Castile-Leon bypassed his heirs and passed to his brother Enrique II, the fifth son of King Alfonso XI. The current House of York are descended from Pedro's daughter Isabel, who had married Edmund Plantagenet, Duke of York (the ancestor of the House of York). The Yorkists see themselves as rightful Kings through Isabel, although the current ruling Royal House of Castille, descended from the Lancasters, see it otherwise.

Windsor had gone quiet for a few weeks. It wasn't peaceful quiet, no. It was more an eerie quiet. Just as Edmund could have no more of it, an agent stepped into his court.

"Your Highness, I have a message from Edinburgh. It seems as though the Scottish King has sent a diplomat to Paris."

Edmund did not take the news well.

"Oh, really? Yes, I see. I suppose his diplomat didn't enjoy the bloody pheasant. Oh, well, no matter. I will not remove the title of King of France from my style, nor will I remove the banner of France from my arms, nor will I remove my armies from Normandy, or do anything to compromise myself for Louis the Spoiled little ninny. They should be eternally grateful that I permit them to hold their court in Paris. I could have just as easily taken it back."

He smirked as he thought to himself (It was, after all, given away by a Lancastrian usurper...)

"If they do have dubious reasonings behind their meeting, perhaps I should send a very alert diplomat to Paris... one with the ability to hear conversations that it would be rather impolite for him to hear. Yes, I'll send a very gifted man to Paris indeed... If they are in fact conspiring against me, there will be no limit to my vengeance. Paris will not only be retaken, but the villagers of Paris will no longer be known as Parisians, but Parisites. Ah, it feels good to be King."

A letter arrives from Belfast...

His Royal Majesty Edmund I of England and France;

I have sent a diplomat to Paris to assess the possibilities of the addition of Ireland to the Auld Alliance. I assume that meeting will go favorably, and it will be at my discretion as to whether or not such a thing happens.

I write to you offering an alternative: Return Meath to the Kingdom of Ireland, Renounce your title 'Lord of Ireland', and we shall instead join the Alliance of Britannia.

I offer you this choice, to put it bluntly, because I would prefer to do business with the Devil I know than the Devil I do not.

Signed on the Fourth day of the Seventh month of the year MCDLIII Anno Domini;

Toirdhealbhagh Bog Ó Briain
Ard-Ri Gaidel Erenn, Gall, Bretan, August iarthair tuaiscirt Eorpa uile
(High King of the Gaels of Ireland and of the Foreigners and the Welsh, the Augustus of Northwestern Europe)

As The diplomat suspected the King would be biased, he showned great imaturity in the way he spoke and in the way he seated. The ambassador even tought in becaming a bit imature also, but he stood still and continued with his tone of voice

"I was not informed if my king want to be naughty in Iberia. I for sure don't want to be naughty in Iberia, I don't plan to leave this beautiful Country so soon" he smiled, his voice was the most sincere possible. "And I hope that Portugal and England are still Friends, at least that is they way my king sees this great Kingdom! And also, there are, of cource, profit in this relation, for exemple, the Bilateral trade flourished through English warehouses in Oporto. Cod and cloth were exchanged for wine, cork, salt, and oil!" The looked to the king, he hoped the subject of money would incrise the interrest of the young boy "But arround 1419 the warehouse closed down, because of finance dificults. Portugal is also Interrested in hopening a warehouse here in London"

He hoped the young King would be interrested in something, 'at least money' he thought.

Edmund smiled as the Portuguese man spoke.

"Yeah, well, those French are arrogant bastards..."

People began to stare at the King.

"Oh, you said finance. Right. Well, then, Bilateral trade is always good. Except when the secondary party is a Valois."

It was then when he received the letter from Ireland.

"Oh, my. this is indeed urgent. If you will excuse me."

He then stomped off to write a reply, giggling along the way. (Oh My, Ireland is giving me an ultimatum! I had dare respond with haste or they'll invade my shores with a vast army of three drunkards and a woman!)

Edmund turned to Norfolk, ignoring the Portuguese diplomat who had been patiently waiting.

"I've been thinking, Norfolk... I have sufficient claim to Ireland.. Enough to claim their throne, no?"

Norfolk sighed.

"Your Majesty, I have had the privledge to have examined your pedigree several times. Yes, You could legally do that."

"Very well. Explain my claims to Ireland."

He loved to hear of how grandiose his lineage was.

"Very well, your majesty. Your mother was Cecily de Neville. Her father was Ralph de Neville. His mother was Maud de Percy. Her mother was Idonea de Clifford. Her mother was Maud de Clare. Her father was Thomas de Clare...."

Bored, Edmund began to simulate snoring.

"Oh, my. Where are my manners? Continue on."

"Very well, Your Majesty. Thomas de Clare's father was Richard, the Earl of Gloucester... His mother was Isabel Marshall. Her mother was Isabel de Clare. Her mother was Eve McMurrough. Her mother was More O'Toole. Her mother was Catherine O'More. She was descended from the Irish King Roderick, whose suffix was 'The Great'."

"If this bloke was so great, then why have I never heard of him, or half of these supposed ancestors of mine?"

"The Irish have heard of him, Sire. is that not all that matters?"

"If I am to call myself King of these savages, then I'm damn sure going to have to believe myself when I say it."

"Very well, sire. You have other claims to Ireland."

"Explain.. but not too in depth. Keep it as brief as possible, but make it elegant."

"Your Mother...."

"Emphasis on the word 'brief'. I trust you to tell the truth, so there is no need for irrelevant details of pissants I have never heard of."

"You descend from the greatest of Irish Kings, Brian of the Tributes. The namesake of the current King."

"Superb! an Irishman even I have heard of.. this Brian was able to kill the bloody Norse savages who plagued Ireland, so that Wild Irish savages could plague Ireland... Now, Briefly.. how strong is my claim?"

"Well, sire.. It's rather distant, but, quite frankly, these Irish savages don't mind being ruled by foreigners. They have willingly invited Norwegians and Scots to take their throne before."

"Then I will consider taking their throne.. But I need someone to govern them.. Perhaps my brother would suffice?"

"George, sir? Well, he was born in Dublin..."

"Yes, but he is far from my foremost obvious successor, even if I should not bring forth an heir... Therefore, his loyalty is questionable."

"I am certain that he has no designs on your throne."

"Very well then. Should war come with that old fool, Murrough, then I will declare myself King and put George on their throne..."

He again then noticed the Portuguese diplomat.

"You may have the warehouse space that your King wishes. Is that all that you seek, or is there something more...?"

Dinis hear everything the king said to his adviser, it seems that this king was ready for some action, first the french now the Irish, he was a Good ol'English. But this young boy seemed to not have a so great memory

The man bows and continues "Your majesty my Mission here is to re-sign the treaty of Windsor, that I talked about your highness before, the treaty where Portugal and England entered in 'an inviolable, eternal, solid, perpetual and true league of friendship between the kingdom of England and the Kingdom of Portugal'. Wich made the trade and friendship between our nations flourish and even let the king of that time persue the claim to the kingdom of Castille! He bows and waits for a reply.

A wide grin enveloped Edmund's mouth.

"You have just heard me speaking of conquest of Ireland, You speak of Conquest of Castille, and yet you come here seeking to ratify an alliance, even after internal war has ravaged your country for several years?"

He thought to himself (God! I love these crazy Portuguese.)

"I would be happy to sign the treaty... as eternal as it may be... as so long as the treaty specifies that Portugal recognize the King of England as rightful King of France and Castille eternally as well. We, like you, have been engaged in a great deal of Civil war... With the Valois, with the Dukes of Lancaster... And such a provision would be appreciated."

He waited to hear what the diplomat had to say.

The king seemed to be a nice young lad, even if he liked to collect claims from allover the world...

"Your majesty" continue repling the envoy "We do not seek the conquest of Castille, they are our allies, I just added that information that I forgot to add in the past when I was talking about the Treaty of Windsor.
And I believe it is not for the good of Portugal and England to expecify any claims, we could say 'Portugal accepts and supports all and every claim, in the present and in the future by the throne of England" I am sure the your majesty would support the reverse....
"

He nodded as he began to think (It would be wise to play this off as more of a compromise than it really is.)

"Ugh. Well... That is... Satisfactory. If a treaty was made of the details we mentioned, I would sign it."
