Rome + VV -> Game freezes

Hello,

I bought rome and VV from gamersgate a week ago. I played around 1-2 hours a day without any problem. But since today, i cannot get thru the day "31st january". The game always freezes at that date. I try to reload the game a couple of days before, but i get always the same result, game still freezes to the 31st.

This is quite disapointing, because i really like the game. By the way, I also played eu III + NA + In nominee with same computer and i never had any problems.

I already read the following post:

I did the following :

I installed last patch for VV

I installed last Vista update

I installed the last driver for the graphic card

I switch compatibility mode to windows XP

I modify settings.txt to have "multisampling=0"

I tried to get directx 9.0c from the link, but it keep installing directx 10

The game still freezes

Installing DirectX 9 will not remove DX10, they run in parallel. Since the game does run for a while it's likely you have an OK version of DX 9.0c, but you may as well try the latest from Microsoft:

The full download option downloads a file directx_mar2008_redist.exe ; like the above option it needs to be downloaded to your machine, then run to extract to an empty directory (such as c:\dx9 or anything you like), then you must run the dxsetup.exe from there to actually install it.

The web-based setup option below is similar; you have to download the installer (dxwebsetup.exe), save it to a local directory, and then run it.

Is this only on one particular saved game that it freezes? If you start a new game it's OK and gets past 31 January?

Also post your Rome/settings.txt and Rome/logs/system.log files. Note that if you use Vista and have installed the game in the suggested folder c:\Program Files\Paradox Interactive\Rome\, the active versions of these last two files will have been redirected by Vista to a non-system directory, like c:\users\[name]\appdata\local\virtualstore\Program Files\Paradox Interactive\Rome\. You may have to search your C: drive for them.

Actually, this is the 31st January of the year 530 AVC. I have a couple of not too old save games before that date, and whataver the one i take, it freezes to the 31st.

For sure, if i start a new game, it won't freeze to the 31st of the year 474. I am scared to start a new game and get stuck again after 15 hours of playing :wacko:

Can i send my save game, so you will have a look?

UPDATE:

I loaded an older game. That save game brought me back to august the 30th, the year before where my game freezes. I putted full speed and i was able to go thru january 31st, but i saw that the game slowed down for a millisecond at that date, and barbarian rised up to a neighboring province. Don't know if these barbarians can be related to the earlier crashes. Hope that won't crashes too often.

Anyway, if you have an idea how i could improve the robusteness of the game, you're welcome to share it with me!

EDIT:

Finally, it freezes again few months after, the 4th july 530 AVC. It looks like that more far i am in the game, more the game is, unfortunatly, unplayable. Any idea is welcome

I don't really have a lot more to suggest. You could try turning sound off, edit settings.txt and set master_volume=-1 . Also set fullScreen=no, maybe when it freezes now you'll get some sort of Windows error or some other clue as to what's going on.

I don't really have the facility to check into your save game, but you could post a link to it here and hopefully some kind soul can look into it for you.

I installed the last driver for audio and i also tried with master=-1, it change nothing

I didn't get any error in windows mode. It still freezes, without any error.

Could you try opening the savegame with a text editor and searching for "noculture" (without the quotes)?

Yep, there's your problem.

Re-read the thread on how to fix ithe saved game.

You have to fix armies too.

Best thing to do is install the noculture fix from Cheesxta make sure she has that extra } in it.

Once you have the no culture freeze patch you will never have a problem.
