I fail to understand how is Spices connected in any way with the religious sphere. How about...Incense? I suppose that'd make more sense.

Incense is probably part of the whole 'spices' field. Kind of how like Gold in the EU series included any precious metal, gems, etc.

Though it would makes sense to have spices give a tax bonus and a smaller religious bonus.

How does trade actually work in Rome? I know you create trade routes, but does it work like Civ where every (connected) city/province gets the benefit?

It seems that it is only the two provinces doing the trade that are effected. At least when it comes to allowing the building of units. As this screenshot (which i have posted before in another thread) shows:

It specifically says that only the two provinces involved are getting the ability to build the units. I would suspect that it would be the same with the other bonuses.

My sentiment also. Although the game isn't a trading one something more complex would be better.

Stage one (raw material): wood

Stage two (processed material): timber

Stage three (manufacted): furniture


Trade could happen at any of the 3 stages: advanced societies with greater knowledge would import raw materials from tribal backwater etc.

It's not gonna happen for this game but perhaps an expension.

That seems a bit complicated for a game of this type. But a few more trade goods seems like a good idea to me.

For example pottery, precious metals, silk, exotic animals.

That would be Victoria. Besides even though there were some big industries in the ancient period (the fish sauce industry literally had great factories running) it would be too industrialized and modern. Manufactured products was usually done small scale and with local raw materials. With a few exceptions.

Well, too many resources could kill the game. Remember that each resource mean one trading route, and you have to micromanage every one of them, in every one of your province ;) Not mentioning confusion which it can unleash upon AI ;)
