I have always liked Rome-- first version I got as a late comer was VV. Went back to it when HOI3 was such a problem and now I can't get away from it long enough to get HOI3 1.4 a trial. Big deal for someone who considers himself a WWII historical gamer primarily. Waiting to see how the latest beta turns out as a patch. When you are old the synapses don't work to learn the new language so you can mess with files and have something good happen as is required with the beta.
Imagine a Rome without VV if you can. It was like EU:3 1.0, it 'worked' but it wasn't any fun. HoI3 1.0 was rather feature rich in comparison (though suffering in the buggy, broken & unbalanced departments)
To be perfectly honest, however much I like Paradox, I've never liked any of their first releases, the love always came after the first - patched - expansion pack. (The exception would be HoI2 which I got when it already was heavily patched)
This has been posted a million times, I know. Paradox never fails in delivering a great game in the end. I just fear that many customers who experience the 1.0 versions get very disappointed and never return to the game.
Why this happened for EU:Rome stronger than the other games I don't really know. I think because it felt more like a gimmick version of EU:3 with a much smaller map, slightly updated graphics and some CK family trees thrown in. Maybe just because the antique period is less popular. Maybe because many of the 'lingo' is quite confusing: propraetor, censor, consul, proconsul, etc.
