Ah, I'm happy to admit that i'm out of my element here -- what bugs me (and then you can explain it) is that certain 3D maps seem to be laggy in scrolling and zooming. HOI3's seems to be annoying in that respect.
Or is this really a different issue?

Never had a map be more laggy than the vic1 map (even when paused, but scrolling the map when unpaused is unthinkable for me)

I think South-aligned maps are great. Early Islamic maps always were and they really give you a different perspective. The problem with the pictured map is that it employs a mercator-like projection that makes the northern countries look much too big in proportion. A Gall-Peters projection is much better in this regard:

But back on topic: I thought the map in Rome was gorgeous, but not very informative. I like the current Vicky2 setup much better. The rotation feature was frankly annoying and misplaced in a grand strategy game.

Regarding the Gall-Peters map: Horrible, I though Mercator was bad but that is the worst possible map.

Regarding to the thread itself: Current Vicky2 graphics are better than EU: Rome's. I just like the style better.
