You're pretty much doing what I want Rome 2 to look like (surely, I'd prefer an earlier start date at around 500BC but it's still great :D )

What history can you do? Greek/Hellenistic, Roman, Carthaginian, Barbarian? In Masters of Rome I want to do a better job at simulating internal politics of the roman republic than vanilla Rome.

edit: i just realised you might be talking to the OP not me. if that is the case, sorry about that! lol

No I'm actually replying to you :D And this timeline (diadochi wars) I mentioned in the 'who wants a Rome 2' thread yesterday or 2 days ago :)

Hellenic history and bits of Roman. I could help with some untranslated sources from Greek if you wish too.

Awesome. Welcome to the team. I'm more of a roman expert myself so any help with the Wars of the Diadochi is much appreciated. One event I want to add for Egypt is the decision to "Bring Alexander's Body to Egypt". What do you think? Not sure what it would achieve apart from maybe starting a war between Ptolemy and Perdiccas.

It's a nice touch but there's historic sensitivity tbh. I mean no one really knows where Alexander's body is. There's this Greek female archaeologist who claims to have found his actual tomb but is not allowed by the government to explore in the area. Think it was around Egypt. Assuming the game begins when Alexander dies, his body should be in Babylon. Therefore an event for at least three of the 'diadochi' should be legit. Bring Alexander's body to a) Pella, b) Alexandria and c) (let it remain in) Babylon.

With EUIV's coalitions I think this can become extremely intereting when 3 rulers claim his body.

Interesting. Well the start date is 322 BC which is about a year after alexander died. My idea for the Macedonian Empire was to divide it into states like Macedonia, Egypt, Lydia, Media Megale, Bactria etc all ruled by Satraps. each of these satrapies starts as a vassal of the Macedonian Empire which is focused on 2-3 provinces around Babylon ruled by Alexander IV (in regency). This way if you want to play as Alexander IV you could theoretically diplo-annex your vassals to effectively recentralize Alexander's Empire. If you want to play as a successor state like Egypt you begin as a vassalised satrap and must build an army and make alliances with other diadochi satraps to gain independence from the macedonian empire/babylon. if the empire loses enough vassals an event should trigger changing it into the Seleucid Empire. This is how I think it could best work in EUIV. I guess if a satrap was able to bury Alexander's body they would gain some sort of legitimacy bonus? this could really benefit ptolemaic egypt.

You mean as a private citizen? Correct. But, if there was appointed succession in the game, and new successors could be elected at set terms, rather than at death, it could work out pretty well, as you'd only have access to those troops when you actually are in office.

Exactly, which is why you need a fairly detailed set of mechanics that simulate how the various families bid and influence the public( during republician era) or the Emperor to get those official positions, and the player is allowed to slowly climb ranks by the virtue of his office works.

Playing as a State is more in line with the period, but still I'd like more character based events. Marriage alliances between monarchies, etc, plots and I'd like every member of the "Senate" in the Republics be characters that switch from one faction to another according to their interests.

I don't think that Rome 2 based on CK2 will work very well than Rome 2 based on EU4 with elements from V2, CK2 and HOI3. But if will work, Ck2 fans will demand HoI 4, EU5, V3 to have characters playable. Imagine a HOI4 where you will not play with Nazi Germany or Soviet Union, but you will play with Hitler and Stalin.

What do you think? It would easier than trying to mod CK2 (believe me, I've tried).

I've been making a concept in my head ever since I started playing CK2 about how an EU Rome game or mod would work.
I'd like to help out as much as I can. I don't have much knowledge about the time period (I have basic knowledge of the era) but I can research further. I think a hybrid system between EU (3 and seemingly 4)'s country based system and the CK2 character based system would be best for this time period. Like the country system is mainly for external conflicts with the character system being used for civil conflicts.

I could work on events such as the Rise of Christianity and the civil war that turned Rome into an Empire.

Another Rome should be a mix of CK2, EUIV, and V2, to the point where it is the bastard super child of Paradox, taking CK2's dynasties and families and expanding them huge, letting you play as a Roman family or other group of sorts, EU's economics and style, and V2's usage of population and identity.

I chose the start date of 322 BC for two reasons, 1) it gives the player additional 50 years of gameplay compared to the original EU:Rome and 2) you guys can try and rewrite history in the east. The wars of the diadochi are just about to start and in 322 there were many successor states besides the usual big 3 - Macedonia, Egypt, Seleucids (in fact the Seleucids did not exist yet in 322 BC).

The map: I'd like the map to extend as far as northern India so the Maurya empire should definitely be playable. Obviously Gaul, Britannia, Germannia and Iberia (Spain) will be areas for tribal conquest by civilised states in the west. Carthage is a rising maritime republic with a strong navy while the fledging roman republic has recently conquered Neapolis and is turning her attention toward conquering the ferocious samnites.

Base Game: EUIV
Time period: Hellenistic/Roman (322 BC - 180 AD)

EUIV has alot of powerful new features such as trade routes, a nice looking map, dynamic historical events and a weather/seasons system.

What do you think? It would easier than trying to mod CK2 (believe me, I've tried).

I like a lot in that idea, but I don't know that I would extend the map quite that far. Nice to have India in the game, but I do fear that it could cause diplomacy and conquests to get bit too ahistorical. Of course if you could include India without that happening, that would be fantastic.

While I like the Ck games, I MUCH prefer a state based game. Some character stuff would be fine in a hypothetical Rome II, but I wouldn't want to see it extended to, say, having to secure an heir to continue playing, or anything along those lines. I'd really like it better if I could focus more on statecraft and empire building than have to worry about a dynasty, or a myriad of traits and ratings like in CK II.

A lot of the events in CK II are fairly silly and cheesey for my liking, and I wouldn't want a new Rome game to incorporate the awful attempts at humor or go out of its way to make lame popular culture references, etc. I don't know why the felt the need to make it so cartoonish; while CK I had some of that, the sequel really ramped it up. Having a big character focus leaves the door open for that type of bad joke. I can already envision a bunch of dumb Asterix jokes if you fight in Gaul, "What have Romans done for us" Python references messages when a conquered nation revolts or having an Egyptian character become cowardly because he hid from a mummy that had returned to life, or any number of idiotic jokes.

Would love to play this if modded with EU4. Hope you guys succeed. :) CK2 system do not fit with what I want from a game in this period, but I'll miss the character system in EU:Rome of course, suited the game fine.

I'd be happy to help with history, etc. I've been reading Herodotus, Polybius, Suetonius, and Tacitus lately, so I guess you could say I'm on a bit of a classical history kick.

While the character interactions with CKII work very well, the dynasty mechanic doesn't fit the era. In the republics, dynasties didn't really exist until the last generation or two of the republic (hence the end of the republic). In the eastern empires, the same dynasties ruled uninterrupted for the entire game period. So the first question is what entity does that player play as? Playing as nations in the first game didn't really use the character dynamics all that well. Dyansties don't make sense.

Dynasties in monarch-type countries, "Factions" in Republics. You could play as the greens, or the blues, or the reds, or whatever. And families would have a faction loyalty, but could change.
