I really don't see why people that considered themselves Romans already suddenly decide they need to be MORE roman and start learnig as first language/Lingua franca (that they already knew actually) a language nobody spoke in the Roman Empire since Justinian.
Also, at the time, nobody in Italy spoke latin. The language had evoluted and changed in various dialects and proper languages that came from latin and had influeces from German, French, Arabic and Greek already (not counting that most of the time southern italy was still mostly greek).
Also, Greek was already some kind of Lingua Franca per se, with no need of learning a brand new one no one knew except the bloody Pope (and we all know how much the Orthodox Basileus loved the Pope).
