In the early game even if you are technicaly a mighty empire there is always a sense that your realm is not secure because your man at arms are still relatively weak and your income is generally poor and you seems to be always vunerable to rebel or outside attack especially tribal.

Which make my early game inadvertly making all of my character greedy or ambitious even i lf they don't have the trait because i always want more domain and more money to build my domain and men at arms and the thought of giving away land always litterally stressing me out and anything that give me money i will take in a heartbeat.

So how do you roleplay as generous character in this situation? Do you give away land or gold to someone that need or want it or do you take the stress?

I'd say a generous character would often give money to the church (if Christian) or grant lands to his closest family and/or council members. Perhaps spend money on buildings on your subjects' holdings, indirectly still benefitting you, especially ones owned by your Bishop.

I agree that roleplaying a generous character at game start with a small and weak realm is challenging and in some situations you are even forced to play against your character's nature (a few events don't allow going into debt to take the money spending option) - which is fine to an extend, as you likely suffer stress in exchange.

I try to find a bit of a compromise here - I take account other traits/perks as well: IMO, it makes e.g. a difference if generous is paired with Ambitious, Just, Diligent, Zealous...compared to being also Compassionate, Content, Humble, Profiligate or Improvident. The latter examples are a reason for me to play the character in more extreme fashion (as the generous trait is generally or situationally aggrevated for me), while the former group of traits limits the generousity rather.

It also plays a role how big my treasury is and whats the big picture - there is a difference between being at peace with everyone and having 150 Gold intended to be invested for a new building soon vs. having only 50, while being in a close defensive war and have a shrinkling treasury on top each month. In the first case I'm usually more willing to sacrife the longterm investition to blow the money out in a sudden event (a generous and diligent character being an exception, see paragraph above), while the second example is the situation where even an overall very generous character might have to watch each penny (again with exceptions - think of a lunatic character, where I tend to use a dice, or a Zealot feeling a donation is necessary anyway to get the blessing from above for the defensive efforts)

Love roleplaying generous characters and have entire cultures, religions and dynasties designed around being generous. Having generous republican/theocratic vassals are great because they also give you gifts for absolutely no reason especially if they ran out of things to spend on. Giving away money for elective votes and having those vassals give you back the money is a really nice gig, and I've enjoyed it as a law and diplomacy focused Daneland. And everyone in your realm is doing it because you have the Charitable cultural tradition, making everyone in your culture to more likely to be generous. Pretty fun actually.

The adventure legacy also cheapens gifts by half so I can make everyone happy for much less. Slapping Ritualized Friendship once you get the final legacy makes making friends also massivelt profitable.
