I invented droids, yet my robots stayed as robots for decades. I tried to change laws to remove servitude, yet it didn't help. What an I doing wrong?

I don't run any mods. I've read animated robot animations can influence this, however I don't have this mod either.

I noticed the same too. I think it might just be that the name stays and they got new options (got robot pops in expert jobs)
But I grew suspicious as I researched synths and still robots were kept in non-sentient servitude state

I noticed this too and was trying to fix it by disassembling my few robots and then rebuild droids but I noticed there is no way to disassemble robots anymore (unless I am missing something obvious). I even switched to robot workers outlawed and they were still there.

If you click in the population tab of a planet and click on the assembling icon it does let you choose which robot template to want to build. Although it only lets you choose to build either "any" or one template to prioritize. I kinda wish you could choose multiple to prioritize at a time without having to choose "any".

From my experience, they *are* upgrading, but their names aren't changing.

When I researched droids, my "robots" could suddenly work in most specialist jobs+technician jobs+clerks, despite still being listed as "robots".

And for whatever reason, egalitarians can't choose templates.

I think there's some argument to be made that you can't do this if they're synthetics with rights, but for robots and droids? It makes zero sense. One of the biggest strengths of synthetics was always the ability to choose which pops were placed where. This being gone is a huge blow.

I believe the upgrades are working it is just the name doesn't change to droid or synthetic. When they upgrade they can perform more jobs and get a general % bonus to all production. I noticed when I upgraded to synthetics I had a small housing crisis as they suddenly doubled their housing needs. I probably had a drop in amenities as well but it wasn't a significant issue at the time.

Is it probably some sort of auto-upgrading system? I noticed a decent amount of biopops with traits I never gave them, presumably from self-modification. Could it be that robots are only upgraded to droids when they're moved to a droid job?

I got the tech, I got the factory, got templates set up, I am smashing it and not getting the side panel.

I guarantee you I am hitting that button and not getting a choice. I don't know how else to say "Robots ain't workin right."

I got the tech, I got the factory, I am smashing it and not getting the side panel.
I think somehow population controls being set to off affects robots, or so I've heard.
As to the OP: There are no separate species for droids and synths anymore, the tech merely allows robot pops to work more jobs, robot armies, and synth leaders.

Robots suck, after researching droids, some of my designated "harvesters" specialized at gathering food promoted to specialists, and kicked some xenos out of their well paid jobs :D
