So far, I've only gone far enough into the tech tree to get droids (plus 3 modding points).

Does 2.2 split the three? I'd like to oppress my cybernetic minions (making them for Worker jobs), but would like the option of building the occasional droid or synth.

Nah it's still a "Pandora box" system, once you get the tech they all become the new type.
Synths are kinda bad honestly. You lose those amazing workers that cost no consumer good and use 1/2 housing space in return for gaining just another pop with some bonuses and unrestricted habitability.

I don't really see a use for them, maybe if you really want to colonize some planets and don't want to take refugees, genetically mod your main specy, or do terraforming.

I would have liked a system where you can keep on building non-sentient machines. I don't see the reason you absolutely must give conscience to every walking heap of junk just because you can.

I'm guessing I'll stop them at droids, then get an uplift species, nerve staple them (if I can't get a drone), and use them as workers...

It'd be nice to have a genetic caste system, though... You'd think the biological ascension path would have that.

I believe this is actually possible now. Try outlawing AI while allowing robotic workers, that should give you pretty much synth droids.
