Crusader Kings 2 - The Road of Queens
Chapter Eight Hundred-Thirty : Duck Politics
Diplomacy
After a couple of pints of cool beer the Bard was ready to continue. He strummed his lute and went on with his tale.
“It was the 28th of September when the High Chief’s future bride came to the holding with a letter of approval from her husband,” said the Bard with a smile on his face. “She was a lovely female. Like Scrooge her feathers were as white as clean snow and her figure-”
“Get on with it!” said the Princess.
The Bard sighed.
“Anyway,” he continued, “They had there wedding that very day. Being greedy Scrooge collected a Royal Aid Duty from all the guests. To help pay for the ceremony.”
“His new wife had a good opinion of her new husband,” said the Bard. “Well, had a semi-good opinion of him. Well, she tolerated him. So Scrooge decided to give her a gift. And of course the best gift, at least in his eyes, was coins. So he gave her a honeymoon gift of a small purse of gold coins.”
“His NEW Father-In-Law Chief of Nandagiri, as well as Chancellor of Gangavadi AND one of his Liege’s Commanders, had a high opinion of his Son-In-Law. Though he did have a temper he was mostly, as the duck folks said, a good egg,” added the Bard.
He waited for the laughter to die down. He didn’t have to wait long for there was no laughter.
The Bard sighed and then continued. “Scrooge’s Brother-In-Law also liked him. But the 14 year old duckling, named Winghelm, was a cynical youngster. He questioned everything. Had the Gods truly existed? What had come first, the eggs or the duck folks? Were cookies a snack or a dessert?”
For some reason the Empress and the Princess found THAT funny and laughed their heads off.
The Bard just smiled and waited for them to stop before he went on with the story.
“But by early October High Chief Scrooge was more interested in his neighbor,” stated the Bard. “This only neighbor. Or maybe we should say he was interested in High Chief Dewey of Sinhala’s holdings.”
“A war with Dewy was needed. So Scrooge sent his Chancellor Scrooge to the County of Pihiti. This was the Capital of Sinhala and the Chancellor was told to find out a way for High Chief Scrooge to claim it,” the Bard added. “The Chancellor was smart enough to dress and act like a human. To the duck folk this was a very effective disguise as humans all looked alike to them.”
The Princess snorted and the Empress giggled. The Bard assumed they had done that because they found racist ducks funny. Or because they were dunk.
“In March there was some alarm when the neighbor called forth his levies. Had he noticed the Chancellor among his people? Was he attacking first?” said the Bard trying to sound alarmed with a touch of surprise and a pinch of mystery.
“But it turned out he was involved in a whole different war,” proclaimed the Bard with a strum of his lute. “Seems King Beaky of Ankaia was attacking the Depose High Chieftess Tyra of Tondai Nadu. Which was strange because their Religion said that females were not allowed in positions of power.”
The Empress and the Princess glared at the Bard. He decided to move on with the story. Quickly.
“Why outnumbered the Depose had many allies,” remarked the Bard. “In fact both sides had many allies and it was likely the war could go on for years. And High Chief Dewey was one of the High Chieftess’s allies.”
“This was a good thing,” added the Bard, “as it meant his troops would be tied up in the conflict for who knows HOW long.”
“Why waiting for this Chancellor to find, or create, a claim for him High Chief Scrooge decided to sway High Cheiftess Kicki. After all, he wanted his wife to love him not just like him,” said the Bard trying to make it sound romantic.
At that point he stopped again as the two women laughed. He wondered if they even believed in romance?
Then his stomach rumbled and he said, “Any food I can have? Telling a story is hungry work.”
The Empress snapped her fingers and said, “Been the Bard a platter of fried fish, sweet breads, fruits, and some more beer to wash it down with.”
So we close this chapter with a wedding of a pair of ducks and a Bard feeding his face to tame his hunger so he can continue with his duck tale.
