Is there any way to get shown the names of rivers on the map? AFAI remember you could hover the cursor over a river in HoI1 and it would show the river's name, but somehow I can't make it work in HoI2.

Help, please!

What ever happened to geography class from school? ;)

Seriously, I don't find it a big issue since I always have a nice map book handy when I play. If I want to find out the name of a river I'll look it up. One thing that is a bigger issue IMHO is the fact that all provinces are named after the biggest city, which is a bit rediculous in some areas.

WOOT! I have a full set of ordinary maps, military maps (Richard Natkiel), a full array of various charts and notes from several years back when I play. I guess that makes me some sort of übergeek then :)

I have always wondered if the reason for that is that Paradox:

  1. Developed this game from Europa Universalis, et al, and in those games the capital city of a province matters since you can "conquer" the province, but then must lay seige to the capital city separately until it falls, or
  2. The game 'scale' in HoI-2 is such that most game "provinces" are actually a combination of several provinces in real life?
Perhaps one of the harried moderators can shed some light on this?

I think it's mostly #2
Especially since various countries have widely differing scales of "provinces" IRL, and thus taking the names of RL provinces is seldom feasable.

And then there's the "issue" of 'historical familiarity' -- would you rather be stopping the Ardennes offensive at Bastogne or in the (Belgian!) province of "Luxembourg" ?

Hijacking aside, this thread seems mostly to be the suggestion that river names should be vissible..so this goes to the suggestions subforum.

Pardon me, wasn't aware of this suggestions subforum. Glad that somebody actually listens to fan suggestions! Thanks!

heh, this isn't actually fully true.

but with the rivers, I personally don't have a problem. only the really major rivers are there to begin with, though if every river is included (which I hope to see in the next iteration of HoI) then yes, having the names (and the ability to toggle them on/off) would be very nice.

IMO it would enhance the 'feeling' with the HoI map :)

Breaking that defence line over the Dnjepr is more fun then breaking that defence line of A river.
It would add to the feeling that you are conquering real territories instead of just plain boring 'provinces'.

aye, and each river should be of unique--after all, different rivers posed different challenges, width, depth, current speed, etc...

Well, are minister's pictures really needed? But some people go to all the effort of getting one to match the name. It would help the 'immersion' if the river name came up if you hovered the mouse. [that sentence was not totally pun-free  ] I suppose some extra wide/deep/strong/soft or steep banked rivers could have worse penalties aswell.

Im not saying i didnt like it or that i dont miss it but a river not being named is no where near as big a loss as say hitler without a picture. There effects to fighting at rivers in the game but having to change it for every specific river would surely be a hell of a job aswell?

No need to get that detailed, as the only rivers represented in the game are the major rivers. However (you just knew that there would be a "but", didn't you?):

There are really large and very wide rivers, like the Amazon, Mississippi, Po, Rhine, Danube or Dneiper, and then there are the "medium" large rivers, like the Daugva, Moisel, much of the Thames, etc., etc. Some of these rivers vary in terms of their military effects, depending on where you are in a country (i.e. the closer to the source, the smaller it is).

I would create two classes of rivers, say a category "1" and a category "2". These could be rated by a different symbol on the "Between Provinces" little map on the province display. These would have different stat's for affecting the combat multipliers if an attack developed.

I am guessing that all these multipliers and game mechanisms already exist, and this would be a relatively easy change to impliment.

Also, when the river got below level "2", it would just stop being shown on the map as a military obstacle.

Finally, as to names--I can live without them, but they would be nice... Having seen how "busy" the map is now, where it is difficult to pick out one object over another, I would favor some game switch, where you could turn the names on permanently (like province ID numbers), rather have to "Hover" the mouse coursor over some length of the river.
