I've played Stellaris quite a bit since launch but ever since Utopia I'm having trouble figuring out why exactly I'm being rivaled and at what negative modifier is it that the AI will do so. It seems that most people I meet are instantly rivaling (especially if I'm only a star system away).

For instance. These guys I met and yes our borders are close and I did put a frontier outpost between us. (actually i think this is before that as my influence is still 2 and the border friction is not the -8 it was after the fact)
and now this one I can't explain at all except maybe the Slaving Despots as his fleet was somehow ~900-1k and mine was 230. But yea...yeesh.
