This will be a largely narrative AAR, because
a) i'm doing the early bits from memory
b) i don't know how to put pictures in

in my first game, god knows what happened but somehow all the European unifications occured before 1500. and luxemburg survives.

any pointers will be appreciated (both in writing and gameplay, and when its caught up advice in direction)

Rudolf, King of Germany, Holy Roman Emperor, Sultan of Constantinople stood motionless, Albrecht Achilles von Weimar was dead.

He was the hero who had led the triumphant Brandenbugian troops to victory in Luneburg and Brunswick, before Germany was a distant dream. He had commanded landings in Alexandria and had personally raised the German flag over Mecca. It had been coming for some time now, since his retirement to the province of Hamburg he had been nothing but an delapidated, corrupt shadow of his former glory.

It was the end of an era.

'Send a delegation to the funeral.'

Rudolf knew that there would be outrage at his decision not to attend, but Polish nationalists assassinating his father meant that he had more urgent matters at hand. He would travel with his court first to Rome, then to Madrid, then to Lisbon, before going to meet Augustus and Ivan in Alexandria to discuss the threat from the east.

Thanks, i dont know how often i'll be updating, but one should (work allowing) be today.

Enewald- I just figured it was a decent way of establishing that he has a casus belli on the turks (i.e a core on thrace)

Comagoosie- some of the characters listed may just end up as cameos, depending on how belligerent they are.

Rudolf paced the halls of his lodgings in Rome, what had originally been planned as a quick stop off had devolved into a nightmare, his grandfather had sponsored the Milanese in the unification of Italy, he and is father had fought the ottomans in the Balkans when the Italian holdings of Naxos and Corfu were under threat.

And now this. Some perceived slight in Anatolia had led to the Netherlands declaring war on Italy. Britain and Spain had already announced their support for the Italians, due to the guarantees signed when Italy had needed loans to survive the encroachment of France.

Augustus had always viewed Vlaanderen with contempt, seeing it as an insult to Britain that his nation had to trade through a foreign power, and Augustus was, at the best of times bellicose and uncouth. He would not see sense. Nor would Luis, Dutch colonies in Delaware and Narraganset were a great prize for Spain's fledgling colonial empire.

No, this war would need German intervention, international diplomacy demanded that he defend the Italians, but the Italian province of Svizzera was home to ethnic Germans and it would be seen as his duty to protect, if not repatriate them.

'Joachim, order the generals to move to secure the western border and order the navy to blockade Vlaanderen.'

Rudolf now spoke with purpose and resolve, they may be protesting in the streets of Berlin and God knew how many other cities, but no one would ever say that the Germans would dishonour a call to protect their allies.

Karl Edelman entered the room, his chief economic aide, his imperious manner had always annoyed Rudolf, but now was not the time, and besides, his family were a well connected group of merchants, without whom the conquest of west Afrika would not have been possible.

'Your eminence must realise that, whatever the outcome of this war, we do not stand to gain from it economically, if anything our friends in London and Madrid will increase both their colonies and their trade, whereas we have no settlements on th mainland New World.'

'But our Carribean holdings should remain safe?'

'That is again, regretabbly, an issue, we have minimal garrisons in our colonies in the New World, and they are yet to be fortified. Also the Dutch navy is far more advanced than ours, albeit much smaller.'

'But Afrika should be safe?'

'As it is only us, Spain, Italy and Britain on the entire continentm it should be safe, however the Cape needs a larger garrison, but they can be raised from local tribes, the Dutch efforts toward Afrika will be most likely minimal, if existent at all.'

'Very well Karl, now do we have enough in our coffers to fund the war effort?'

'We do, Afrika is providing more than enough money for both war and peace'

'Very well Karl, now I must go and feign interest in the establishment of a new Roman Empire, and most likely ignore any matters of importance.'

The assembly room was in shock, as Zacharias de Winter prowled among the dignataries, making small talk and causing arguments, often in the same sentence.

He made his way up to the podium and yelled for the attention of the crowd.

'Esteemed guests, dignitaries and generals, when this country, these Netherlands, were born in the most violent war France has ever seen, we could not have gained independence without German or English intervention, but now they assume we are mere vassals to them. We conquered Eastern Anatolia, and if it were not for Italy's silver tongue and German stubbornness, the Dutch flag would be flying over Constantinople and Western Anatolia. Today I have moved to rectify that, and as of two hours ago, we are at war with Italy.

I have instructed our Luxemburgian allies to assault the German border, we will rendevous with them at Nassau and strike east to Berlin. Our navies have already begun the voyage to the unprotected German Carribean and have begun to blockade Rome as we speak, and our most proficient and experienced armies are en route to Anatolia to drive these 'Romans' out. We will make our mark on the annals of history!'

Germany has most of the provinces that give ivory, etc and ive conquered all the west african nations - mali, songhai, hausa, etc so i have a respectable tax base there, enough to support a moderate but modern army.
