Well, I don't know about the rest of you, but 1.06 has certainly caused me to change my style of play considerably. After playing a few games historically in order to learn the new ropes, I decided to play a more ambitious game in which I would flush history down the toilet. But I didn't want things to get too difficult, so I figured I'd pick Malacca. With its rich CoT and easy access to prime colonization grounds, including King Jakarta, building an Asian empire should be a cinch, right?

v1.06 GC, Very Hard / Furious

  • Dominate the Spice Islands early
  • Give Portugal the finger when they arrive

The Rise of the Sea-Dog Sultans
Chapter One

Imagine, if you will, that we are on the Malaysian peninsula in the early Fifteenth Century. (If you won't imagine, it will make the rest of this very difficult. So just do it. Good. Was that so hard?) Now, as we enter the city of Malacca, capital of the Sultanate of Malacca, we find Megat Iskandar, the Sultan himself. Looking a bit more closely at this man, we see the toll that the years have taken on him. He is haggard and weary, and as ready for the knackers yard as a person can get. But his eyes reveal an inner vision greater than himself, a vision that, unbeknowst to him, shall soon propel his people down a path they could never have imagined. Unless they're all insane, of course. The Sultan appears to be listening to suggestions from his advisors. Listening, but not heeding. For this man does not need advisors, such are his leadership abilities (8/8/7). Let us cock an ear toward the conversation ...

---

"Your Grace, I beseech you! Claiming the throne of Atjeh could be construed as an act of aggression!"

"That's because it is an act of aggression, you dolt," the Sultan stated flatly.

"But ... Sultan ..." stammered Chief Eunuch Abdullah Al-Dindin. "Your daughter will likely be killed when your proclamation reaches Atjeh!"

"Well, I didn't marry her off a year ago because I liked her," replied the Sultan with a wink.

"Sultan, I do not believe we have the resources ..."

"... to defeat Atjeh alone? You are correct, for once. But that is why I agreed to enter an alliance with Ayutthaya, Cambodia, Pegu, Vientiane and Taungu."

"Sultan, I seriously doubt ..."

"... that they will all join us in a war? You are probably correct again, amazingly as that may seem. But Ayutthaya will join us. And if the others refuse the call to arms, the alliance will fall apart, which will leave one less coalition plotting against Malacca."

"Still, Master, I feel this course of action is far too dangerous ..."

"Bah! Have some balls, Abdullah."

At this the eunuch was silent.

---

The Sultan was right. Only Ayutthaya and Pegu honored the alliance when Malacca declared war on Atjeh on the final day of 1421. Cambodia, Vientiane, and Taungu broke off to form other alliances, and this angered the Ayutthayan Devaraja, upon which the Sultan was heard to comment, "Tough titty." Or something like that.

Sadly, Megat Iskandar would not live to see the end of the war against Atjeh, as he died with the year 1423. His successor, Sri Mahârâja Muhammad, was not quite as skilled (6/6/5), but was competent enough to lead Malacca to victory in the Atjeh war, and in April of 1425 Atjeh agreed to cede the province of Riau and 75 ducats, in addition to becoming a vassal of Malacca.

Muhammed's reign would be a prosperous one for Malacca. He oversaw the founding of the sultanate's first colony in Jakarta, as well as the establishment of trading posts in Manado, Jambi, Palembang, Sunda, and Bandung. Malaccan trade filled the Sultan's coffers with gold, and merchants were sent to the nearby trading ports of Shanghai and Ganges. Relations with Atjeh were repaired as well, for Muhammed gave much financial aid to the humbled vassal so that it could be rebuilt. Relations improved so much that in 1430 Malacca left her alliance with Ayutthaya and Pegu in order to forge a new alliance with Atjeh, an alliance that would last for 16 years, after which Atjeh agreed to become an integral part of Malacca.

Alas, Muhammed was unable to keep breathing long enough to complete this union himself, and was succeeded by Abu'-Shahid Ibrâhîm, who was at best a mediocre leader of men (4/5/4). Fortunately, his reign was only to last for two years. In 1446, Ibrâhîm was killed in a freak harem accident the details of which remain cloudy to this day. His replacement was the most able Muzaffar (8/4/6), whose silver tongue achieved the long-anticipated absorption of Atjeh. Muzaffar ordered more trading posts to be founded in Flores, Sumbawa, and Banjarmasin, and the expansion of Sunda into a proper colony. The population of Jakarta was through increased colonization expanded to over 600, after which the local natives saw the grace of Allah and joined the swelling ranks of Malacca's population.

Malacca and her Neighbors, 1450

By 1450 Malacca had established herself as the dominant nation of indonesia, but nevertheless her position would soon be challenged ... rather foolishly, really, but challenged nonetheless.

Well, considering King Crimson is one of my all time favourite bands (yeah, oddly enough I like groups that create intricate rhythms and know how to play their instruments) I'll be following this. Good luck.

Lord Durham: Hate to disappoint, but I actually snagged the Crimson King moniker from Stephen King. Glad to have you reading along ...

Imperial Army: Fighting over the scraps of the HRE does get boring after a while doesn't it?

Judas M.: Give 'em what? A hand? Some credit? A break? ;) Don't worry, I'll give 'em all what they deserve.

O. Cromwell: Hee hee ... actually, Portugal and China both showed up about 1450 or so. The Portuguese sent an explorer who sailed around, said "WTF?", and sailed home looking very confused. China landed a large army in Kalimantan and slaughtered all the natives there, thus prompting me to immediately send a settler. After my TP was set up, the army quickly died of starvation. Tough titty, as the late Sultan Iskandar would have said. :D

I hope to post Chapter 2 sometime this weekend.

Thanks for reading,
CK

Chapter 2

Malaccan Royal Court
December 12, 1451

"So then I said, 'That's no lady, that's my thirty-eighth wife!'"

The court visitors roared with phony laughter at Sultan Muzaffar's hackneyed joke. Just as he was beginning to bore them with another, First Deputy Eunuch Jafari Jagoodi rushed in. "Sultan! Sultan! We have a dire emergency!"

"Emergency?" queried the Sultan with a frown. "What is it?"

"An urgent situation requiring immediate action, but that's not important right now! The Sultan of Brunei has refused to recognize your claim on his throne. It seems he has learned that the 'cousin' you married off to his son was actually a peasant slave from your harem."

"Bah! How am I to keep track of which harem girls are cousins and which ones are not? Well, he leaves us no choice. Convene my war council!"

---

And so it was that an unfortunate misunderstanding led Malacca and Brunei to war in 1452. While the soldiers of Brunei fought bravely and died bravely, they were no match for the Mighty Morphin' Malaccan Marines (tm), and after a mere two years of war Brunei agreed to cede Sabah and become a vassal of Malacca. After the peace was signed, there was much rejoicing in the Sultan's palace, and the Sultan was heard to exclaim, "Kickass!" Or something very nearly like it. It is difficult to verify such quotes.

Muzaffar would rule for another five years, during which he expanded Malacca's colonial holdings to include all of Borneo and Celebes, save the tiny principality of Makassar. Yet the able Muzaffar venerably snuffed it in 1459, paving the way for the slightly less adept Mansûr (5/5/7).

Under Mansûr, Malacca helped to rebuild war-torn Brunei and improved relations with the Hindu nation of Mataram. Mansûr was so successful in these endeavors that in 1464 he forged an alliance with the two island nations. Secured by her allies, Malacca enjoyed a decade of peace and prosperity, until the practice of pawning off harem slaves as royal relations once again resulted in an international fracas.

---

Malaccan Royal Court
October 2, 1477

"What's wrong Abdullah?" the Sultan asked of his Chief Eunuch. "You should be celebrating our great victory."

"Well, Your Mercifulness, I am troubled that perhaps what we have done to poor Makassar is not right in the eyes of Allah."

"Nonsense! They had the chance to capitulate peacefully, but they refused."

"After which we sacked their capital without a fight."

"It is hardly our fault that a peasant uprising resulted in the death of their army mere months before we invaded. And I think we did the Makassar nobles a great service by slaying that rebel army before besieging the city. Our occupation was much less brutal than one by rebel scum would have been."

"True ..."

"Besides, now Makassar is our vassal, and we can begin to prepare them to become full members of the sultanate. Now drink and be merry, and watch as I throw this walnut in the air and catch it in my mouth. Aaaaaa ... gghhhh ... *choke* ggghhghhhgk ... uhh!" And with that, Sultan Mansûr met a most untimely end.

Abdullah sighed. "Will somebody please fetch us a new Sultan? We've lost another one!"

---

Mansûr's replacement, Sultan Ri`âyat, was an even worse statesman, but a bit brighter when it came to matters of the military (4/6/8). In fact, the young Ri`âyat (3/3/2/0) personally led the Malaccan army during the Ayutthayan war of 1486. The conflagration broke out when the Ayutthayan Devaraja claimed that the harem slave gifted him two years prior was, in fact, a man. It is not known whether his claims were valid, nor is it known why the Devaraja required two years to make such a judgement, but these things are of little consequence. What is of consequence is that the Sultan declared war in December of 1485, and was joined by his allies Brunei, Makassar, and Mataram. The Ayutthayans were joined by Vientiane and Taungu.

Ri`âyat marched into Phuket, defeating the Ayutthayan army there and laying siege to the city. Repeated counterattacks by the Devaraja's elephant riders were repulsed, and the city fell into the Sultan's hands just as the Malaccan navy completed the task of sinking Ayutthaya's modest flotilla of 5 ships in the Bay of Bangkok. Taungu largely remained neutral in the struggle, while the forces of Vientiane boldly stood by their Ayutthayan allies as they were slaughtered by Ri`âyat at the Battle of Bangkok. Sadly, the victory was to be a pyrrhic one, as the Sultan was trampled by a war elephant during the melee.

There being no shortage of suicidal idiots in the realm, the Eunuchs quickly found a replacement Sultan. Mahmûd (3/2/7) was more than able to successfully prosecute the war to its conclusion, but he was absolute rubbish at more peaceful endeavors. But, we digress. The Ayutthayan war ended with the Devaraja pledging fealty to the new Malaccan ruler, as well as half his annual income and several Bhuddist hotties from the Monastery of Ill-Repute.

The Sultan's Harem
April 18, 1500

The night's festivities concluded, Sultan Mahmûd rested his head comfortably on a pair of breasts with a name unknown to him. "Ah, my dear ... that was more enjoyable than my sacking of Bangkok."

"Hee hee ... I bet you say that to all the girls."

As the Sultan prepared another faux compliment, Abdullah entered, with the royal cartographer in tow. "Abdullah, how many times must I tell you not to interrupt me while I am involved in important matters of state?"

"I beg for your mercy, Your Randyness, but you asked to be notified when the new maps of the Sultanate were completed."

Mahmûd sighed. "Very well, let's have a look." The cartographer spread the map out onto the floor.

Malacca05.jpg

"See here, this isn't accurate ... Makassar was annexed two days ago!"

"Yes, Sultan ... the cartographer has not had time to make that adjustment."

"Well, see that he does! What's this green speck here?"

"Ah, we do not actually know of the existence of that island, but we believe it to be populated by Portuguese traders."

"Who the hell are the Portuguese?"

"An upstart seafaring nation from Europe, sir."

"Where the hell is Europe?"

"Many days sailing to the west, O Geographically Gifted One."

"I'm confused. Leave me ... I wish to attend to more important affairs," said the Sultan with a sidewards glance at Wife 138-b.

"Certainly sir. Allah knows there are many affairs for a ruler such as you to attend to."

Snow King: Thanks for the compliment. I tried Brunei once but grew frustrated with their poverty. By the time I finally got trade2 (for TPs), Portugal had already laid claim to half of Borneo. In frustration, I hired a mercenary army and attacked Malacca only to get my ass handed to me. C'est la vie.

Chapter 3

Following the Ayutthayan war, Sultan Mahmûd gave generously of the Malaccan treasury to help the Devaraja get back on his feet. (This was to prove quite a challenge, given the ruler's corpulence.) Relations between the two countries improved so much that in 1503, when Ayutthaya's alliance with Taungu and Vientiane was ended with the typical elaborate elephant dung hurling ceremony, the Devaraja agreed to join Malacca's alliance with the Hindu island nation of Mataram. Taungu joined an ongoing alliance between Dai Viet and Cambodia to avoid becoming isolated in the fast-moving world of southeast asian politics.

---

Malaccan Royal Court
January 5, 1506

"They declined again?!" cried the Sultan, distressed at his latest geopolitical failure.

"The Mataramis stated that they are not yet convinced of Malacca's good intentions."

"Bah! If we don't absorb them, the Chinese will ... and then we'll all be -"

"Sultan!" came the shriek of another Malaccan diplomat as he rushed into the court. "War!" the diplomat spat out between heavy breaths.

"War?! What is it?"

"A bloody conflict between two or more nations, but that's not important right now. Ayutthaya has declared war on Cambodia! Mataram has refused to join, but the Cambodians have rallied Dai Viet and Taungu to their cause."

"Damn those treacherous Mataramis! And damn that Devaraja! Well, we mustn't allow the Ayutthayans to destroy themselves. It will hurt our interests in the region." The Sultan turned to his Chief Eunuch. "War, Abdullah ... what is it good for?"

"Absolutely nothing, Sultan."

---

While the Ayutthayan elephant warriors fought bravely in the ensuing war, they were no match for the mighty armies of Cambodia and Dai Viet. Taungu, already involved in her quinquennial war with Assam, formally joined the conflict but committed no forces. The Malaccan plan of battle was quite cunning. Instead of marching the army north through Ayutthaya, an invasion force of 25,000 men was loaded onto ships and landed in the Mekong Delta, thus opening a second front in southern Dai Viet. As Khmer and Saigon were besieged, the Cambodian and Vietnamese armies were forced to abandon their siege of Bangkok. Their attempts to destroy the Malaccan invasion force availed them not, and more troops poured onto Dai Viet's shores, laying waste to the province of Da Lat. Their army broken and the southern half of their nation in flames, Dai Viet sued for peace in April of 1507, paying the alliance 80 ducats for peace. (A ducat being worth quite a lot in those days.)

Thus, Cambodia was left to face the Malaccan and Ayutthayan juggernaught alone, what with Taungu still unwilling to fight (and die) for her ally. On October 3, 1507, Pnomh Penh fell, placing the entire nation in Malaccan control. Utterly defeated, the Cambodians agreed to cede Khmer to Malacca, grant military access rights to Ayutthaya, and pay the alliance 256 ducats for peace. Upon the treaty's signing, the Sultan was heard to exclaim, "Bonus!"

But war was not the only endeavor of the Sultanate in 1507, for in March of that year a brave explorer by the name of Abu Wher Ar-wi requested funding from the Sultan so that he could brave the uncharted ocean and discover new areas for Malacca to colonize. He was gifted a boat and the Sultan's best wishes, and as he sailed off in the direction of the rising sun, his family went about the business of dividing up his personal estate amongst themselves. Wher Ar-wi's voyages were wildly successful, as he discovered the Phillipine Islands and the isle of New Guinea, all of which were soon cleared of natives and colonized by Malaccan settlers. His success inspired another brave soul, Dust bin Suker, to discover the southern coast of Australia and New Zealand in 1514.

---

The Sultan's Rumpus Room
October 28, 1519

"Checkmate. You lose again, Sultan."

"Bah! One of these days I shall defeat you, Abdullah."

"Of course, O Strategically Blessed One. Perhaps that day's arrival could be hastened if you were to lay your opium stash aside while we were playing."

"Nonsense, it helps me to concentrate."

"Well sir, I suppose it could only enhance the wit of a ruler of your mental prowess."

"You needn't shower me with such effusive compliments, Abdullah. Now, what was that business you wished to discuss last night while I was busy in the harem?"

"Ah, yes. It is appears Ayutthaya has declared war on Taungu, who are joined by Dai Viet and Cambodia."

Mahmûd sighed deeply. "Again? How bothersome. Very well, rally the troops for an invasion of Taungu. What about the Mataramis?"

"They have refused to join the war."

"How typical. Well, those faithless bastards' independence shall be fleeting, now that they are our vassals. Remind me to propose the annexation of Ayutthaya upon this silly war's conclusion. I tire of this nonsense. Now, I believe it is your move?"

"Sultan, the game is over and I am already victorious."

"Bah! Then make yourself useful and fetch me more opium."

"As you wish, O Lucid One."

---

Once again, Ayutthaya's lust for power plunged Malacca into war, but the Devaraja's second international hissy fit would be rather fruitless. After the sinking of the Taungun navy by Admiral Hang Nadim (3/3/3) and the landing of 20,000 Malacaan troops in Irrawady, Taungu agreed to pay the alliance the grand sum of 75 ducats for peace. Upon hearing of this, the Sultan was heard to say, "37 ducats? 37?!? For this I fight a war?!?"

Shortly thereafter, the Chief Eunuch gently reminded the Sultan of his mental note regarding the annexation of Ayutthaya to prevent subsequent pointless warring. And so the Sultan arranged for a dreadful accident to befall the Devaraja, and assumed control of Ayutthaya in August of 1520.

Malacca then enjoyed seven years of peace broken only by the occasional uprising of peasants in the former Ayutthaya. But Dai Viet's annexation of Cambodia prompted Mahmûd to declare war immediately before meeting death with his opium-glazed eyes wide open. He was replaced by Ri`âyat I (7/5/7), son of the great battlefield commander Sultan Ri`âyat (whom we shall refer to as Ri`âyat Naught henceforth).

Taungu and Mataram joined Dai Viet and Malacca, respectively, but contributed little but encouraging words to the war. The fighting lasted much longer than Malaccan commanders had hoped, but finally in April of 1532, with popular support for the war quickly evaporating (particularly in Malacca's majority Buddhist provinces), Dai Viet surrendered. The Vietnamese prince agreed to cede the province of Cambodia and pay 250 ducats in reparations, in addition to receiving a swift kick in the arse from Ri`âyat I.

The long process of placating a population tired of war began, and when that task was completed, Ri`âyat I began improving relations with Mataram while continuing to expand Malaccan colonial settlements. His efforts finally paid off in January of 1547, when Matarami ruler Aria Pangiri, being of small wit compared to Ri`âyat, agreed to the annexation of his nation by Malacca. With that task complete, the Sultan joined Malaccan in alliance with his vassal Dai Viet and longtime nemesis Taungu. With the annexation of Mataram, Malacca's dominance of Indonesia was at last complete, and her growing possessions in southeast Asia made her the most powerful nation on the continent, with the notable exception of China, Land of the Inexhaustable Reserve of Soldiers.

OOC: The eagle-eyed among you will probably notice that China has claimed southern India. Not shown is their reduction of the Manchu to one province, annexation of Korea, and northward spread toward Kamchatka, the extent of which is presently unknown, thanks to the stubborn Japanese, who keep refusing me military access despite good relations. As a sidebar, Austria currently leads the VP total with a bit over 1100 (I have so far resisted the temptation to type Columbus in order to see how they achieved this). Malacca is second with 827.

Au contraire, those small states between India and Dai-Viet are among the hardest to play, and their games can go either way.

Hm. When is th invasion of the Chinese mainland due? ;)

No. Not with enough cavalry and a centre of trade giving cash into infrastructure and trade.

First off, thanks to everyone for all the compliments and encouragement. I'm having a ton of fun writing this thing ... even if most of the jokes are ripped from the Airplane! movies.

PriestOfDiscord: Well, this one's been anything but boring, despite containing far less blood than is usual for me. Though instead of Brunei, you might want to try Taungu (orange blob bordering Malacca in the latest map). They have six or seven CB shields in the area IIRC, and are in prime position to seize Malacca and Ganges. If you truly want a boring game, play Zimbabwe. ;)

Sytass: I think they're all about as hard as a one-province German minor, except of course for Delhi, Bengal, and Malacca, each of which start with significant advantages. Suffice to say, New World pagans are probably the toughest, what with their lack of cavalry early on. As for invading the Chinese, I shall assume that either you are joking or you have been raiding the Sultan's opium stash. :D China is at landtech 14 and currently has monopolies in Ganges, Malacca, Shanghai, and Kansai. Only Malacca's trade agreement with the Dragon has kept her merchants safe. (Did I mention China's trade eff. is over 50%?)

Florian: Well, I'm alright on that for now ... the only nation nearby with landtech better than 2 is China (see my response to Sytass above). But once the Sultan annexes Dai Viet, I'll get a nice neighbor bonus.

Owen: It's amazing what you can do with a few horsies, isn't it? Alas, with the DP sliders no longer affecting support costs, having cavalry make up more than 75% of one's army does tend to drain money. As for the CoT, oh how I wish I could get to trade3 ... fifty more years of research, at least. *sigh*

O. Cromwell: Hang a left at the 900-pound gorilla to the north, eh? But wouldn't you agree that having a long border with China would be nice if, hypothetically speaking, she were to have several RR-increasing events? And there's the issue of Vientiane recently leaving their long alliance with China, and all those horrible insults hurled at Malacca by Taungu ...
